We have completed one round of bracket play and there is very little change to this week’s rankings as a result. Many of the top teams cruised to first-round victories, but the competition will get more difficult this week and as we advance further into the playoffs.

Class 6A

This week’s poll looks the same as last week as all the top five posted strong showings in the opening round of the playoffs. Read out recap of the first round and find out who the top five teams will matchup against in this week’s Regional round of the playoffs at the link below.

Class 5A

While four of the top five rolled to first-round victories, Bishop Carroll needed overtime in order to slip by Hutchinson. In fact, the Golden Eagles scored on a four-yard touchdown pass from Chase Smarsh to Matthew Holthusen with :01 second left to tie the game and force overtime. In OT, Hutch fumbled on fourth down and Carroll settled for a game-winning 20-yard field goal from Michael Polley to advance, 31-28. See the remainder of the top five at the link below.

Kpreps – Class 5A Rankings

 

Class 4A

The top five advanced to next week’s regional round in Class 4A. Top-ranked Basehor-Linwood and defending champion St. James Academy each posted big wins to set up their reginal showdown against each other this week. The top-seeded Bobcats will host the 8-seeded Thunder with a date in the quarterfinals on the line. See the remainder of the top five at the link below.

Class 3A

The top five in Class 3A each posted first-round victories last week. Cheney topped Clearwater, 48-14, and Wichita Collegiate eliminated a good Pratt team 23-8. That sets up a second-round showdown between the Cardinals and the Spartans for a second consecutive season. Wichita Collegiate won last year’s meeting 35-20. Class 2A

The five ranked Class 2A teams all advanced to the second round setting up some quality matchups on paper in the regional round. Top-ranked Rossville continues to roll despite playing without standout quarterback Torrey Horak. The Bulldawgs defeated Republic County, 56-0, and will face traditional contender Nemaha Central next week. Meanwhile, No. 2 Silver Lake will take on St. Marys this week. Silver Lake defeated the Bears 29-28 back in Week 2 of the regular season.

Class 1A

Only one of the top five in Class 1A actually played on the field last week. Olpe, Inman, and Sedgwick all received first-round byes, while Smith Center received a forfeit victory over Wichita Independent. Only Wabaunsee got on the field where the Chargers rolled past Northern Heights, 68-0.

Class 8M-I

There are no changes in this week’s Eight-Man, Division I poll as all five ranked teams advanced to the  Regional round. There are some great matchups in the second round as we have sixteen solid teams remaining in this classification. Class 8M-II

The only ranked team to lose last week was No. 4 Osborne in Eight-Man, Division II. The Bulldogs dropped a 24-6 decision to defending champion Hanover. Osborne had defeated Hanover 36-26 a few weeks back. Find out of the remainder of the first-round results and the Reginal matchups at the link below.

Class 6-Man

Congratulations to the Natoma Tigers for topping Cunningham 60-12 in the 6-Man Wild West Bowl on Saturday in Dodge City.

Derek George’s touchdown run late in the third quarter ended the contest by the 45-point mercy rule and delivered Natoma’s first state championship in school history.

Kayden Martinez finished with 170 yards rushing and four touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass. George added 98 yards and three scores on the ground for the Tigers.

Cunningham finishes second in the final Kpreps poll, while Ashland is third. The Blue Jays edged Northern Valley, 39-38, in the consolation game on Saturday.

This is the final season for the 6-Man Football Association as 6-Man football will officially be recognized as a classification by KSHSAA beginning next fall.
