Topeka High returns to the Class 6A poll with a 35-7 win over Centennial League rival Washburn Rural.  The Trojans replace Lawrence in the rankings after the Lions fell 28-14 to No. 3 Lawrence Free State.  Shawnee Mission West moved up one spot to No. 4 this week after the Vikings handled Shawnee Mission Northwest 40-9. Finally, in maybe the top game of Friday night, No. 2 Derby held off Wichita Heights 21-15 in overtime.

In Class 5A, Salina South sophomore Mike Jones rushed for 411 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Cougars beat Great Bend.  In the Eastern Kansas League, No. 4 St. Thomas Aquinas stopped a Bishop Miege pass at the 1-yard line and time expired as Miege tried to run on the field goal unit.  Aquinas held on for a 27-24 win after fourth quarter touchdown drives of 88 and 95 yards. Blue Valley West solidified their grasp on the No. 5 spot by beating Blue Valley 45-21.  Conley Wilkins rushed for 281 yards and four touchdowns for the Jaguars.

While the top five in Class 4A remained unchanged, second-ranked McPherson and fifth-ranked Fort Scott both were pushed.   McPherson scored two touchdowns in the closing minutes of the game to finish off Chapman 42-24, and Fort Scott built a 24-7 lead but held on to knock off Chanute 24-18. Top-ranked Holton, third-ranked Mulvane, and fourth-ranked Wichita Collegiate all rolled to Week 9 wins.

Week 9 in Class 3A brought no change to the top five.  Top-ranked Silver Lake and No. 2 Scott City each posted shut out wins, while Garden Plain, Beloit, and Conway Springs each posted big wins to help claim district championships.

Class 2-1A’s top five also remained unchaged, but not untested.  Stanton County scored with less than five minutes to go in the game to top another playoff qualifier in Sterling, 28-20.

Mankato-Rock Hills enters the 8-Man, Division-I poll at No. 5 after blasting Osborne 56-6.  The Grizzlies have won five straight since a Week 5 setback to Clifton-Clyde.  Rock Hills replaces Pretty Prairie which fell 20-18 to previously ranked Solomon.  The top four in Division-I remained the same as Ness City, Madison, South Haven, and Marmaton Valley all tuned-up for the playoffs with big Week 9 wins.

All five teams in the Division II poll posted big wins on Thursday night. Top-ranked Baileyville B&B and fifth-ranked Thunder Ridge posted shut outs, while No. 2 Sharon Springs-Wallace County won by 50 points over Wheatland-Grinnell.  Third-ranked Waverly and No. 4 Otis-Bison scored 69 and 76 points respectively in posting big wins.
