In our Picks to Click, we feature six players or units from across the state that we feel will have breakout performances on Friday night. Check back next Thursday to see our picks for week seven, and how the players performed that we picked this week.

Tommy Hill, RB, Cheney

After hanging tough in consecutive weeks against Central Plains League powers Conway Springs and Garden Plain, the Cheney Cardinals appear poised to breakout this week against a Chaparral team coming off a heartbreaking loss to Wichita Independent. After 88 yards rushing on 17 carries against Garden Plain, and a 67 yard performance on 16 carries against Conway Springs - two of the stoutest defenses in all of 3A - Hill is looking to top the 100 yard mark and help Cheney improve to 4-2 with their final test before entering one of the toughest districts in class 4A.

Tyler Profitt, QB, Hillsboro

Proffitt (6-0, 160) has thrown for 1,098 yards and 12 touchdowns this season as Hillsboro remains one of the nine unbeaten teams in Class 3A. The senior quarterback has also added 233 yards rushing and five scores this season.  Hillsboro will try and move to 6-0 under new coach Lance Sawyer, as they take on winless Whitewater Remington.

Colton Shirack, QB, Solomon

Solomon junior quarterback Colton Shirack has thrown for only 319 yards with a 44 percent completion percentage this season, but he is the engine that makes the Gorillas power-running game go. Shirack has posted at least 94 yards rushing in each of the Gorillas five wins this season.  He is averaging 115.8 yards per game - an 8.04 yard per carry clip - with seven touchdowns, as Solomon has ended every game early thanks to the 45-point mercy rule. Shirack and the Gorillas will be looking for more as they face Canton-Galva this week.

Wichita Heights defense

The Falcon defense has been the key to their season, in spite of losing defensive coordinator Steve Martin to the head coaching job at Wichita Northwest this spring. Since a week one 47-16 loss to 5A's top ranked Bishop Carroll, the Heights defense has allowed an average of only 12.5 points per game in reeling off four straight victories. Heights will face Martin and his Northwest Grizzlies this week and Coach Rick Wheeler will certainly strain to throw his best defensive game plan at his old friend.

Trevin Wiens, RB, Meade

Wiens (6-1, 180) saved his biggest performance of the season for the Buffaloes biggest game to date.  The senior speedster rushed for 238 yards and two long touchdowns runs as Meade controlled the first half in winning at Stanton County 28-6. Wiens has now rushed for 584 yards and eight touchdowns this season, and has increased his career total to 3,332 rushing yards. Meade takes on winless Syracuse this week and while his carries may be limited, look for Weins to add to his 8.6 yards per carry average for the 2012 season.

Skyler Windmiller, QB, Mill Valley

Windmiller (6-2, 180) is one of the state’s top quarterback prospects having already thrown for 1,117 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.  Last week, he completed 17 of 25 attempts for 271 yards and six touchdowns the Jaguars routed Bonner Springs, 49-12.  For his career, Windmiller has thrown for 5,283 yards and 61 touchdowns against only 18 interceptions.  He has also amassed 960 rushing yards and 10 scores in his three years as a starting quarterback for the Mill Valley.  The Jaguars host another four-win team in KC Piper this week.

Last week’s Picks to Click (Week 5):

Maize South defense -- Maize South posted its third shutout of the season by shutting down Goddard, 42-0. The Mavericks have surrendered only 24 points through five games this season

Dan Morin, OL, St. Thomas Aquinas – Morin helped the Saints improve to 5-0 with a 28-7 win over Blue Valley North.

Kelan Newton, QB, Dodge City – Newton completed 20 of 30 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, but Dodge City fell 24-7 to Great Bend.

J.T. Richardson, QB, Northeast-Arma – Richardson threw for 167 yards and a score, and added 63 yards rushing and a touchdown in the Vikings’ 22-14 win over Jayhawk-Linn.

Tyson Robke, WR/DB, Lebo – Robke caught five passes for 117 yards and two touchdown as the Wolves won a shootout over Flinthills, 74-54.

Trey Schmidt, QB, Goessel --  Schmidt completed 12 of 18 passes for 238 yards and seven touchdowns in the Bluebirds’ 82-50 win over Tescott. Schmidt has now thrown for 988 yards and 24 touchdowns this season with only four interceptions.
