The Hutchinson Salthawks remains the top team in the state’s largest classification after shutting out Haysville Campus, but face a traditional Missouri power in Rockhurst in Week 3. It will be the fifth consecutive year the Salthawks and Hawklets have met with Rockhurst holding a 3-1 advantage in the series.
Derby and defending champion Olathe South remain at No. 2 and No. 3 in our poll, while newcomers Dodge City and Lawrence Free State enter at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Two marquee match-ups highlight the 6A schedule for Week 3 as Free State hosts Olathe South, and Wichita Heights travels to Dodge City.
The top five in Class 5A only saw one change this week as St. Thomas Aquinas is the new No. 5 team after a 26-21 win over previous No. 5 Blue Valley Southwest. The Saints turned a late interception into points and then held the Timberwolves in the final minutes. Second-ranked Bishop Miege made a statement this week by posting an impressive 37-20 win over Gardner-Edgerton which was previously ranked in our 6A poll.
A lot of movement in this week’s Class 4A rankings as Buhler rallied from 21-7 down to knock off Wichita Collegaite. The Crusaders move up three spots to No. 2 in our latest poll, while Collegiate checks in at No. 5 despite the close loss. Buhler will get yet another test this week as they take on third-ranked Mulvane. The Wildcats blasted Augusta 68-21. Last season’s state runner-up Eudora enters our poll at No. 4 after a late touchdown lifted them over Frontier League rival Louisburg, 21-20. Holton remains atop the 4A poll after having little trouble with Santa Fe Trail, while McPherson fell all of the way out of the rankings after a 30-point loss to Hays at home.
The most stable top five this season has been in 3A where Silver Lake, Scott City, Conway Springs, Garden Plain, and Beloit all remain in their preseason spots. Conway Springs scored 33 unanswered points in winning over a solid Caney Valley team, while Beloit was impressive in blasting Smith Center 54-0.
There was no change to the Class 2-1A poll this week as all five teams posted impressive wins. LaCrosse’s 34-12 win over Hoisington and Centralia’s 28-0 blanking of Riley County stood out among the top five’s results.
In their first week in the top spot in 8-Man Division-I, Ness City had little trouble with Macksville in a 58-8 romp. The Eagles avenged a 42-40 loss to the Mustangs in the first round of the 2011 playoffs. Madison regained its winning ways by dispatching of Marais des Cygnes Valley, while South Haven and Mankato-Rock Hills posted shutouts. Fourth-ranked Marmaton Valley got the biggest test, having to score 22 points in the fourth quarter to edge Colony-Crest, 46-42. The performance by Crest was good enough to propel the Lancers into the 8-Man, Division-II poll at No. 5. The other four spots in the Division-II poll remained unchanged. It doesn’t seem possible, but district play kicks off for several 8-Man teams this week.
