In Week 3, the heart wrenching story of the Herington Railers continues. Despite the passing of head coach Bud Peterson last week, the Railers remain unbeaten with a 42-26 win over Council Grove on Friday night. Herington quarterback Dylan Giessert turned in a special performance to lead the Railers over the Braves.
Elsewhere around the state, we recap several teams on the cusp of the Kpreps Top 5 Rankings, and describe a bizarre 8-Man vs. 2-1A matchup.
Class 6A
Olathe South remains just outside the Kpreps Top 5 in 6A after drubbing Leavenworth, 37-6. Quarterback Frankie Seurer threw for a pair of touchdown passes, and Russell White rushed for two scores for the Falcons. Olathe South travels to Shawnee Mission East in Week 4 for a key Sunflower League game against the Lancers.
Jorn Winkelmolen hit a 31-yard field goal as time expired to lift Shawnee Mission Northwest over Olathe Northwest, 23-20. The field goal capped a second-half rally that saw the Cougars outscore the Ravens 17-0. Colton Dirks rushed for two touchdowns for SM Northwest. Olathe Northwest was led by Connor Middleton who rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass.
Washburn Rural remained unbeaten with a 31-6 thrashing of Shawnee Heights. The Junior Blues received a big game from quarterback Skylar Curtis. Curtis threw for 145 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 75 more yards and two scores. Jeff Belaire carried two times – both resulting in touchdowns for Rural.
Quarterback Jammie Nunnally rushed for four touchdowns and threw for two more as KC Wyandotte rolled past KC Washington, 46-19. The win was the third straight in the series for the Bulldogs over the Wildcats. Wyandotte improved to 1-2 on the season and will host KC Sumner Academy in Week 4.
Lawrence Free State got a 28-yard touchdown pass from Kyle McFarland to Calloway Schmidt with just over a minute remaining to top Shawnee Mission South, 26-21. The touchdown was McFarland’s fourth of the game as the junior threw for 205 yards, but was intercepted twice by the Raider defense. Gabe Gould led SM South with 140 yards rushing and a touchdown on 22 carries.
Class 5A
Nathan Stanley rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead Topeka Seaman past Topeka High 14-6 in the Centennial League. Stanley totaled 130 yards on the night on 22 attempts. Topeka drove inside the Seaman 10-yard line late in the game, but time ran out on the Trojans’ attempt to tie the game.
Jace Bowman hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Kottas in the final minute as Great Bend slipped by Garden City 14-7 in the WAC League opener for both teams. Kottas accounted for the Panthers’ other score with a touchdown pass to Spencer Bayless in the second quarter.
Luke Bean rushed for 160 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as Kapaun Mt. Carmel held off Wichita South, 35-15. The Crusaders improved to 2-1 on the season and will now play their next four games on the road. Wichita South scored on a pair of Roque Villareal touchdowns.
David Cardinal rushed for 155 yards and four touchdowns as Hays opened WAC play with a 39-12 win at Liberal. The Indians improved to 3-0 with the win and will host Garden City in Week 4 as they try and build momentum for a difficult district which includes Great Bend, Salina South, and Salina Central.
The KC Schlagle Stallions broke open a 20-6 halftime lead with a 24-point third quarter en route to a 50-14 rout of KC Sumner Academy. J’veyon Browning led the Stallions with 180 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Keyaun Burke added 90 yards and another score as Schlagle improved to 3-0 and kept the Sabres winless in the process.
Class 4A
Quarterback Derrick Decker led a strong Rose Hill rushing attack with 205 yards as the Rockets churned out more than 350 yards on the ground in a 42-7 win over Andale. Rose Hill continues to build momentum after a close Week 1 loss to third-ranked Buhler. Traditional power Andale fell to 0-3 on the season.
Austin True barreled into the end zone from a yard out as Clearwater remained unbeaten with a 12-9 overtime win over Towanda Circle. Circle got the ball first in overtime, but had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Kristian Seavik. True then responded with his second touchdown on the night to give the Indians the win.
Fort Scott improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2004 with a 14-0 shutout of Independence on Friday night at Frary Field. Jason Thorpe led the Tigers with 130 yards on 19 carries, but it was the Fort Scott defense that led the way holding the Bulldogs to just over 100 yards of total offense and recording a second-half safety.
Eudora used a potent ground attack to run past Spring Hill, 34-21. Chris Pyle rushed for 192 yards on 21 carries, and Derek Webb added 125 yards and three scores for the Cardinals. Eudora stays in the thick of the Frontier League race with the win, but begins a difficult pair of games against De Soto and Paola in the next two weeks.
Colin Murphy threw three first-half touchdowns as Basehor-Linwood pulled away from Lansing, 43-21. Murphy hit Ben Johnson on a pair of touchdown passes, and added a third to his twin brother Ryan. Colin also added a pair of touchdown runs for the Bobcats.
Class 3A
Galena broke open a scoreless game with two third-quarter touchdowns to edge Frontenac 14-7 in CNC action. Jacob Helton and Tylor Albright had rushing touchdowns as the Bulldogs remained unbeaten. The Bulldog defense was stellar, as the Raiders only score came on a long fumble return by Hunter Mulherin. Galena continues to try and replace injured quarterback Tyler Van Cleave as Levi Sturgis and Nick Sivert both saw action under center.
Wichita Collegiate notched its first win of the season with a 35-7 victory over Wellington. Spartan quarterback Marcus Phox rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns, and Isiah Franklin added 120 yards on the ground. Taylan Ybarra led Wellington with 92 yards on 29 carries.
Belle Plaine improved to 2-1 on the season with a 44-14 win over Leon-Bluestem. Jeremiah Brent led the Dragons with 160 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Dakota Richardson had his second consecutive 100-yard game and added a rushing touchdown.
Smith Center remained unbeaten with a 60-14 thrashing of MCL rival Ellis. Truitt Kuhlmann rushed for 310 yards and three touchdowns for the Redmen, and added a fourth quarter kickoff return for a touchdown to cap the scoring. Smith Center will get a test this week when they host the unbeaten Plainville Cardinals.
Cole Gardner threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth as Wellsville got a strong 32-7 road win over Olpe. Gardner hooked up with Nolan Rush six times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Jesse Lamay scored from 1-yard out to give Wellsville a 12-7 halftime lead.
Class 2-1A
Johnny Steinlage rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown as Centralia squeaked past Onaga 22-14 in overtime. The win marked the first for the Panthers after consecutive losses to Riley County and Concordia to open the 2011 season.
Chase County edged Washington County 13-12 on Friday to improve to 3-0 on the season. Aaron Johnson rushed for 85 yards and both Bulldog touchdowns. Chase County trailed the Tigers 12-6 at halftime, but Johnson’s third quarter touchdown and the ensuing PAT gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.
It’s been a week since Herington coach Bud Peterson passed away at the age of 61. His Railers continue to play with heavy hearts and in honor of their former coach. Herington improved to 3-0 on Friday with a 42-26 Flint Hills League victory over Council Grove. Railer quarterback Dylan Geissert completed 30 of 46 passes for 418 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Giessert’s primary targets were Ramsey Stramel and Dylan Barber. Stramel caught 12 passes for 167 yards and two scores, while Barber hauled in four balls for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Herington overcame a 19-point first quarter by the Braves to lead 28-19 at the half.
The Effingham-Atchison County Tigers loaded the box in order to stop the run and make Doniphan West freshman quarterback Tristan Speer beat them with his arm. He did. Speer completed 12 of 19 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns – all to Marc Ellis – as Doniphan West improved to 3-0 with a 30-13 win over the Tigers. Ellis hauled in nine receptions for 247 yards to go along with his four touchdowns.
Sublette built a 14-0 lead and held on to beat Cimarron 21-14 thanks to a late 80-yard touchdown pass from Cole Sjeklocha to Alex White. The Larks led 14-0 after one quarter as Sjeklocha threw two touchdown passes. Cimarron would answer and eventually tie the game on an Alex Neuschafer touchdown in the third quarter before Sjeklocha hooked up with White in the end.
Class 8M-I
Tanner Cooper rushed for 176 yards and scored three touchdowns as Pretty Prairie blanked South Central 46-0 to being district play. Stetson Broce scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs; two on the defensive side of the ball as he returned a fumble and an interception for scores.
St. John shut out Cunningham 54-0 in a game that ended at halftime. The Tigers’ Kinser Crissman scored on a short touchdown run, a kickoff return for a touchdown, and an interception return for a third score. Patrick Prescott led St. John with 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Benn Kirmer rushed for 240 yards, four touchdowns, and caught a touchdown pass as Central Plains opened district play with a 42-26 win over Little River. Nick Schepmann added a 31-yard touchdown run to seal the game for the Oilers. The Redskins were led by Derek Dean and Chett Cordell who combined for 260 yards on the ground.
After an early Hodgeman County score, South Gray quickly turned their district game into a rout with 50 consecutive points. Colter Croft rushed for three touchdowns and Wyatt Slaven return two punts for touchdowns to go along with a pair of rushing scores.
Macksville remained unbeaten with a 48-14 win over Fairfield to open District 5 play. Mustang quarterback Seth Filbert completed 18 of 23 attempts for 367 yards and four touchdowns. His primary target was senior Adam Oak who caught 12 passes for 252 yards and all four of Filbert’s touchdowns. Oak also carried nine times for 116 yards and another score. Eric Schoenecker scored both touchdowns for the Falcons.
Dylan Price threw for 151 yards and rushed for 88 more as Chetopa blanked Oxford 48-0 in a game that ended just after halftime. Tyler Pike caught six passes for 126 yards and Justice Riddle carried seven times for 91 yards and two touchdowns as the Green Hornets remained unbeaten and set up a showdown with 3-0 Sedan in Week 4.
Class 8M-II
Dighton broke open a 22-20 halftime lead with 22 third-quarter points in pulling away from Weskan in a battle of 2-0 teams. The Hornets star tailback, Guy Fullmer, carried 22 times for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Fullmer also added a kickoff return for a touchdown. Weskan kept things close with the help of Brandan Escamilla (98 yards rushing and a touchdown) and quarterback Sam McKinney (98 yards passing and two touchdowns).
South Haven improved to 3-0 with a 54-6 win over Cedar Vale-Dexter. All three of Austin Showman’s pass completions went for touchdowns totaling 107 yards. Blake Wilkey added 139 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries for the Cardinals.
Chance David rushed for 186 yards and four touchdowns as Ingalls ran past Satanta 76-36. Ingalls, an 8-Man Division II team, bested Santanta, an 11-man school in Class 2-1A, for the second consecutive season. The two schools played an 8-Man game. Satanta has another 8-Man game next week when the Indians travel to take on Moscow.
Osvaldo Granillo rushed for 190 yards and five touchdowns as Moscow rolled to a 60-13 win over rival Fowler. Granillo also caught five passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Moscow and Fowler will play again in Week 8 in a game that counts towards the district standings. The two schools played two times last year as well, with each getting a win on the other school’s home field.
The Caldwell Blue Jays got their first win and points of the post Braden Lebeda era with a 28-0 win over Burrton. Jahue Arnett led the Blue Jays with a pair of touchdowns. Caldwell had been shutout by a combined score of 96-0 by Sedan and Central Burden in the first two weeks of the 2011 season.
