Week one is in the books as several ranked teams fell on Friday night. Perhaps the biggest surprise was in Class 3A where second-ranked Wichita Collegiate lost 23-7 at Clearwater; knocking the Spartans out of our top five.
Elsewhere in 3A, Beloit fell one spot from #4 to #5 after an 18-6 loss to a strong 4A Concordia team. The Trojans had a chance to tie the game late, but turned the ball over on downs and the Panthers added a late touchdown.
Topeka Hayden remains atop our Class 4A poll despite a narrow 22-17 loss to 6A’s #4 ranked Manhattan. Defending champion Louisburg lost for the first time in 14 games as they were shutout 14-0 at Frontier League rival Eudora, and fell out of the Kpreps Top 5.
We have a new #1 team in Class 5A as defending champion Blue Valley – Stilwell ascends to the top of the poll thanks to Hutchinson’s 35-20 loss at Rockhurst (Mo.). The Tigers were impressive in a 51-0 shutout of KC Turner, and switched places with the Salthawks in this week’s poll.
Both Olathe North and Wichita Heights had impressive wins to open the season against strong opponents. Olathe North built a 22-0 lead over #5 Olathe East before holding off a Hawk rally to win 29-14. Wichita Heights was dominant in a 45-14 win over a young Bishop Carroll team.
The Eagles and Falcons appear to be on a collision course to meet in the state championship game for the third consecutive year.
The victory for the state of Kansas took place in Class 2-1A where the defending champion Meade knocked off powerful Canadian, Texas, 24-18. Canadian was the top-ranked team in Texas Class 1A Division 1 this preseason, and had won their opener the week prior.
Among the 8-man ranks, Lakeside-Downs takes over as the #3 team in Division I after a narrow 32-26 win over Osborne. The Bulldogs drop to #4 with the loss.
The Division II top 5 remains unchanged with the Baileyville B&B Falcons at the top after a 65-0 shutout of Cair Paraval. The Falcons may be the most clear-cut #1 team in the state for their respective classification.
Fourth-ranked Thunder Ridge had their game with Hill City suspended due to lightening. The Longhorns and Ringnecks will resume play on Monday with Thunder Ridge leading by two scores.
Check out the Kpreps Rankings page for a complete list of the Top 5 in each classification.
