Highlighted Games:
#8 St. James Academy (6-3) at #1 De Soto (9-0) – St. James
One of two Regional playoff showdowns pitting teams from the Eastern Kansas League against the United Kansas Conference. Both present intriguing matchups. St. James has been highly ranked all season before falling from the poll after a late season loss to Blue Valley. The Thunder are led by quarterback John Hornback and a talented group of receivers. Hornback has passed for 1,339 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 475 rushing yards with six scores. Senior Matt Wurtenberger leads the team with 307 receiving yards, but Will Buser, Cory Kirchner, Luke Niesen, and Cooper Most are all capable big-play threats. Buser leads the team with 763 rushing yards and eight scores. De Soto will look to possess the ball and grind things out on the ground which they are so adept at. Emerson Tjaden has proven difficult to stop and has 1,014 yards and ten touchdowns on the ground. Will Morton has speed around the edge and has added 670 yards and 10 scores. Ben Parks has added 329 yards rushing and has passed for 825 yards and 11 scores. Success on first down will be key for both teams. Can St. James put De Soto in second and third-and-long situations? Can De Soto contain the play-making ability of Hornback? This should be a great second-round game!

Highlighted Games:
#9 St. Thomas Aquinas (6-3) at #1 Bishop Miege (9-0) – Bishop Miege
Aquinas and Miege will meet in an early round matchup that will determine the favorite to reach the 4A state title game. The two rivals met in Week 2 with Miege turning in a dominating performance in a 34-7 win. It was the first game for Aquinas after quarterback Carson Patrick went out with an injury. Patrick returned to play some last week in the Saints’ 35-21 comeback victory at Paola. Miege rolled to a blowout win over Coffeyville in the first round. In the first meeting, Miege led 34-0 in snapping a three-game losing streak to Aquinas. Quarterback Landon Cole threw a pair of touchdown passes – one to Michael Blount who also rushed for a score. Cole has passed for 2,034 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Blount has team-highs in receptions (39), receiving yards (690), and receiving touchdowns (10). Vinney George has rushed for 913 yards and 13 scores. Aquinas has found some momentum with Luke Bernhardt at quarterback and Michael Minnis’ big-play ability in the backfield. This should be another classic between these two Eastern Kansas League rivals.
