Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Washburn Rural cruised to a 35-6 win over Topeka High using special teams. Rural opened the scoring with a blocked punt for a score by Elijah Gains. The Junior Blues later blocked a Topeka field goal attempt and Gains scooped up the ball and returned it for another special teams touchdown. Jadyn Baum then added three rushing scores to provide Rural with enough points to earn their fourth win.
Olathe West scored 35 points in the first half in rolling past defending-champion Gardner-Edgerton, 49-21, on Thursday night. Brody Hale passed for 316 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Owls. Hale threw two touchdown passes to Sam Krzykowski and one each to Josh Foland and Luke Zimmerman. Krzykowski caught eight passes for 120 yards, while Foland added 92 yards on two receptions. Foland also rushed for 87 yards and a pair of scores. Syre Padilla led Gardner-Edgerton with 168 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Shawnee Mission East held off Lawrence 28-20 to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Lancers were led by quarterback Jack Reeves who carried 31 times for 274 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Gus Ketteler added 55 yards on nine carries while Davis Eakes and Thomas Vanice added 32 and 22 yards, respectively. Reeves has now rushed for 1,021 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.
KC Wyandotte snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 28-21 victory over KC Harmon. Senior Juan Pablo Jimenez rushed 42 times for 236 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs. Harmon was led by David Hardin’s 153 yards and two scores. Wyandotte’s last win came on September 29, 2023 over Harmon, 40-14.
Olathe North got back in the win column with a 41-7 victory over Shawnee Mission West. The Eagles scored in each quarter and rushed for 278 yards on the night. Blaise Adger rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Chase Williams added 111 yards and two scores. Riley Johnson passed for 113 yards and two touchdowns – both to Akobi Bruce. The Vikings lone touchdown came on a Lawson Peirce scoring run.
Class 5A:
Salina Central improved to 5-0 with a 42-0 shutout of Newton. Senior Cooper Reves rushed 22 times for 213 yards and two scores for the Mustangs. Abram Owings added a pair of short touchdown runs. Griffin Hall passed for 201 yards and two scores – one each to Reves and Bodie Rodriguez. Reves caught six passes for 83 yards.
KC Washington took control of the Meadowlark Conference with an 82-44 win over Atchison. The Wildcats exploded for 61 points in the first half to lead 61-28. Savion Stone completed 10 of 12 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns. Stone added 273 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Cam’ron Fields had five receptions for 118 yards and two scores and rushed for 149 yards and two scores on seven attempts. Atchison rushed for 380 yards and amassed 576 yards of total offense and lost by 38 points. Leighton Boldridge rushed for 187 yards and Yogi Purdy added 164 yards on the ground with each scoring two touchdowns.
KC Turner snapped a 37-game losing streak with a 42-0 shutout of Kipp Legacy (Mo.) on Friday night. The Golden Bears' last victory came 52-0 over KC Harmon on September 17, 2021.
Andover picked up its third straight win with a 35-7 decision over Goddard-Eisenhower. The Trojans were led by junior Pete Vega’s 182 rushing yards. Nas Williams and Will Quinn each added two rushing scores for the Trojans.
Goddard used a 22-point second quarter to get by Andover Central, 31-23. Andover Central led 3-2 after the first quarter before Goddard took a 24-10 lead into halftime. Erik Olivas rushed 20 times for 212 yards and two scores to push his season total to 738 yards and six scores. Jaxson Green led the Jaguars with 119 yards and a score, while Central QB Max Olson passed for 179 yards and two scores.
Spring Hill stayed alive in the Frontier League race by beating Ottawa, 36-7. Jordan Miller passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Miller threw touchdown passes to Maysen Dodson and Cameron Wells. Hank Kotchavar rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos.
Blue Valley turned in a strong defensive effort in shutting down Blue Valley North in a 35-7 win. The Tigers held Blue Valley North to 38 rush yards on 20 carries and just 150 yards of total offense. Blue Valley’s Hayden Ward rushed for 160 yards and a score and Dan Sogard passed for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Class 4A:
Mulvane scored all 52 points in the first half in routing El Dorado, 52-0. The Wildcats rushed for 300 yards on the night spread out over 12 different ball carriers. Grady Myers led the attack with 85 yards and two touchdowns on six attempts. Manny Myers, Hays Ensley, Hunter Landis, and Kurtis Caruthers each rushed for touchdowns.
Paola traveled to Pittsburg and defeated the Purple Dragons, 33-21. The Panthers built a 19-0 lead at halftime and held off a second-half charge from Pittsburg that included a pair of Jamarcus Davis touchdown passes.
Tonganoxie improved to 4-1 with a 42-0 shutout of Bonner Springs. Sophomore Bodee Maslak passed for 143 yards and two scores to lead the Chieftains. Maslak, Blake Riedel, Paxton Summers, and Silas McCloy each rushed for touchdowns. Brady Martin and Kipton Harder caught the touchdown passes from Maslak.
Ulysses picked up its second win of the season by defeating Goodland, 26-12. The Tigers were led by junior Caden Ledesma’s 138 passing yards and two touchdowns – one to Preston Hittle and one to Edgar Porras. Stryker Berglund rushed for a team-high 90 yards, while Tyce Perez rushed for two scores.
Class 3A:
Hesston scored 44 points in the first half in routing Smoky Valley, 51-0. Blayne Wilson rushed for 155 yards and three scores to lead the Swather offense. Jerick Humphreys completed 10 of 12 passes for 120 yards and two scores. Daxon Deering and Kason Landes caught touchdown passes from Humphreys.
Pratt cruised to a 35-0 shutout win over Wichita Collegiate. The Greenbacks rushed for 332 yards on the night led by sophomore Cade Liggett’s 207 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts. Arley Morrell rushed for two scores, while Cresten Pore and Caleb Strong each added a touchdown.
Concordia doubled-up Chapman 40-20 to improve to 3-2 on the season. Junior Drake Blochlinger rushed 26 times for 147 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers. He also threw a touchdown pass to Liam McNutt. Audiel Becker, Colten Bell, and Brecken Francis each rushed for touchdowns for Chapman.
Columbus picked up its first win of the season by edging Baxter Springs, 15-14. Jonas Stover threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Depratt for Columbus. The Titans other score came on a fumble return for a touchdown by freshman Denver Hughers.
Jefferson West halted a four-game losing streak to rival Holton with a 27-17 victory. The Tigers led 21-6 at halftime and held on for the win. Freshman Brixton Schwinn passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Schwinn connected with Brody Schwinn eight times for 137 yards and two scores and added touchdown passes to Alex Jacobson and Crayton Holman.
Wichita Trinity Academy won for a third consecutive week by shutting out Belle Plaine, 35-0. Quarterback Zac Zimmerman accounted for four touchdowns: two rushing and two passing. Zimmerman threw for 155 yards connecting on scoring strikes to Korie Murphy and Bryton Baty. Cale Kaufman rushed for a team-high 68 yards and scored a touchdown for the Knights.
Neodesha rolled to a 37-6 win over rival Fredonia. Blue Streak quarterback Tayte Leck passed for 140 yards and three touchdowns – two of which went to Cole Ramey. J’Vonte White caught the other scoring pass from Leck. Ramey led Neodesha with 116 yards rushing and a score, while Camryn White added 113 yards on 15 attempts.
Class 2A:
Silver Lake used a 34-0 second half to race bast Baldwin, 47-7. The Eagles led 13-6 at halftime before a 20-0 third quarter. Freshman Kipton Kruger passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns for Silver Lake. All three of Kruger’s touchdown passes went to Dayne Johnson who had eight receptions for 203 yards. Bryson Burgos added two rushing scores for the Eagles.
Phillipsburg scored in the final seconds and defeated Russell, 29-28, in Mid-Continent League action. Russell was 3-0 and off to its best start since 2000. Tanner Horinek rushed for a 37-yard touchdown with 33 seconds left. Russell narrowly missed a 32-yard field goal as time expired that would have won the game. He finished with seven carries for 130 yards and two scores. Trey Zorn continued his huge season for Russell with 347 passing yards and two TDs.
Eureka continued one of its best starts in recent history with a 30-12 win against Bluestem. Eureka led 16-6 after the first quarter and 24-6 at halftime. Senior quarterback Peyton Hare rushed 13 times for 180 yards, including a long of 77. Hare tallied three rushing touchdowns, along with 72 passing yards and one score. Eureka stands at 4-1.
Class 1A:
Southeast-Cherokee won for a second consecutive week as the Lancers defeated Erie, 43-26. The Lancers built a 21-0 halftime lead and rolled to the win. Colton Lawrence and Cayne Windsor each rushed for three touchdowns on the night. Windsor rushed for 152 yards on 24 carries, while Lawrence added 86 yards on five attempts. Gannon Hobbs added 81 yards on the ground.
Ellinwood bounced back from its big loss to No. 2 Sterling and defeated South Sumner, 41-13. The Eagles had all of its yards on the ground with 42 carries for 337 yards. Senior Austin Brack rushed 17 times for 143 yards and two scores. Senior Drake Hosman posted 18 carries for 186 yards and three TDs.
Plainville scored 30 points in the first quarter and beat Oakley, 56-13. The Cardinals held the Plainsmen to 54 rushing yards and 1.9 yards per carry.
Class 8-man I
Sedan evened its district record at 1-1 with 36-28 victory over Northeast-Arma. Lincoln Dowell, Jr. rushed for 216 yards and five touchdowns on 12 carries to lead the Blue Devils. Sedan will travel to rival West Elk this week, while Northeast will host Oswego.
Oswego won its fourth straight game after a season-opening loss with a 52-18 win against Central Burden. Oswego opened with a 16-0 lead after the first quarter and 24-0 at halftime. Sophomore Demitri Williamson finished with seven carries for 101 yards and two scores. Oswego rolled up 28 carries for 297 yards and six scores. The Indians also picked off two passes.
Atwood-Rawlins County dominated Stockton, 56-0, in a game that ended at halftime. Rawlins County led 32-0 after the first quarter. Sophomore Dominique Paz rushed eight times for 111 yards and three TDs. Sophomore Raeth Worthy posted nine carries for 33 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Kinsley beat Spearville, 38-14, and is one of the few remaining undefeated teams left in Eight-Man, Division I. Kinsley led 8-6 after the first quarter and 22-6 at halftime. Sophomore quarterback Josh Stucky delivered 12 carries for 127 yards and a score. Junior Woodrow Lancaster posted 21 rushes for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
Class 8-man II
Osborne dominated Pike Valley, 56-8. Osborne led 14-0 after the first quarter and 38-8 at halftime in a game that ended in the third quarter. Osborne held Pike Valley to six of 22 passing for 91 yards with a score against two interceptions. PV also averaged 3.4 yards per carry with 111 rushing yards.
Linn defeated Beloit St. John’s-Tipton, 54-22. BSJT finished with 276 yards of total offense, including 180 rushing. Senior Cadyn Brummer rushed 17 times for 86 yards. Sophomore Brooks Dunstan finished with 14 carries for 55 yards and two scores.
Sylvan-Lucas dominated Lakeside, 58-6. Per KRSL radio, S-L scored on all eight drives. Zayne Maupin posted seven carries for 96 yards and three total touchdowns, including a 42-yard punt return for a score. Both of Vance Dohl’s receptions went for touchdowns and he intercepted a pass on defense.
Marmaton Valley rolled over Crossover Prep, 74-6. MV led 46-6 after the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Senior quarterback Tyler Lord posted five carries for 136 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for a score.
6-Man
Almena-Northern Valley beat Golden Plains, 61-38, in a matchup of solid Western Kansas Liberty League programs. NV led 16-14 after the first quarter and 32-26 at halftime. The Huskies had 23 unanswered points in the third quarter. NV never trailed after 6-0. The Huskies had a 16-15 lead that eventually grew to 55-26. Northern Valley outgained Golden Plains, 386-358. Taiton Thalheim posted 19 rushes for 141 yards and two scores and caught a two-yard TD pass. He also completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards and two scores. Gavin Thalheim moved over to quarterback and rushed for three touchdowns. He completed six of 13 passes for 61 yards and three scores.
Peabody-Burns defeated Marais des Cygnes Valley, 67-18. Junior Aiden Hurst completed 15 of 23 passes for 256 yards with four scores. He also rushed five times for 129 yards and two TDs. Senior Joesuf Aydelott had 10 catches for 96 yards and three touchdowns. MDCV sophomore Ricky Traver had a big game with 25 carries for 169 yards.
Non-KSHSAA
Reno County Homeschool beat Crest, 75-30, in a game that ended at halftime. Reno County held a 33-24 lead at halftime. Crest had a successful onside kick and scored with two minutes left in the first quarter to cut the score to 26-24. Reno County posted 28 plays for 486 yards. Bo Smith had another huge dual threat day. Smith posted seven rushes for 121 yards and four scores. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 343 yards with seven scores against no interceptions. The Smiths (Jett, Colt, and Rock) combined for nine catches and seven scores.
