Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Dodge City improved to 2-1 with a 27-8 win over Wichita South. The Red Demons turned in a strong defensive effort in forcing two turnovers and limiting South to 103 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Dodge City will return home to take on WAC rival Liberal this week.
Lawrence Free State rebounded from last week’s loss to top-ranked Manhattan with a 49-27 win over Shawnee Mission West. Free State quarterback Finn Moore passed for 152 yards and threw touchdown passes to Maddon Brittingham and Nello Allegrucci. Brittingham added 162 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and tied a school record with his five-touchdown performance. Moore added 141 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
Gardner-Edgerton rolled to a 51-7 win over Shawnee Mission South. The Blazers were led by senior Syre Padilla’s 222 rushing yards on 20 carries. Padilla rushed for two touchdowns. Porter Swaim added 51 yards and a score and a 35-yard reception. Briggs Cunningham added 58 yards and touchdown on the ground and threw a touchdown pass to Jensen Honey.
Wichita Southeast improved to 2-1 with a 6-0 shutout of Topeka High on Thursday night. The Buffaloes broke a scoreless tie with a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Kedrick Harrison. Harrison carried 24 times for 177 yards on the night. He also had a 45-yards reception from Mack Obar. The Golden Buffaloes have a winning record three weeks into the season for the first time since a 4-0 start in 2008.
Olathe Northwest used a 21-point third quarter to pull away with a 38-17 win over Lawrence. The Ravens rushed for 348 yards on the night led by senior Bryce Randall’s 145-yard night on 28 carries. Randall added two rushing scores to push his season totals to 537 yards and six touchdowns. Daniel Skoczek added 73 yards rushing, while Brody Comfort and Noah Harrell each rushed for touchdowns.
Class 5A:
Kc Washington scored in each quarter in routing KC Harmon, 61-0. Quarterback Savion Stone completed 15 of 16 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 68 yards and a score. Camron Fields caught seven passes for 200 yards and two scores and added 67 rush yards and a touchdown. Aviar Shine, Tyson Johnson, and Jamari Williams each caught touchdown passes from Stone. Alvin Riley added a pair of rushing scores.
Topeka Seaman routed Topeka West, 61-0. Junior quarterback Cale Ketter passed for 280 yards and threw five touchdown passes in the win. Josh Brown had two touchdown receptions, while Coy Barta, Jayden Evans, Noah Brown, and Noah Kobuszewski each had scoring catches. Quentin Moravec rushed 18 times for 199 yards and two scores for the Vikings.
Andover outlasted Goddard, 19-16, in overtime. Junior Pete Vega rushed 33 times for 130 yards to lead the Trojan offense. Barrett Hill and Gatlin Tilson each rushed for touchdowns for Andover. Erik Olivas carried 16 times for 114 yards and a score for Goddard. The Lions other touchdown came on a pass from Brock Sullivan to Bryer Rojas.
Blue Valley North scored in each quarter and held off Blue Valley Southwest, 26-23. Lark Anderson passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns and added 132 yards and a score on the ground for the Mustangs. Kayden Augustus rushed for 88 yards and had 81 receiving yards and a score. Southwest was led by Max Orrick’s 196 passing yards with a touchdown. A.J. Keuwo added 102 yards rushing and two scores for the Timberwolves.
Basehor-Linwood remained unbeaten with a 35-22 win over Shawnee Heights in United Kansas Conference play. The Bobcats were led by quarterback Carson Dixon who passed for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also added two rushing scores. Nash Morrison caught six passes for 101, while Will Parr and Anderson Essary each caught scoring passes. Heights QB Aiden Scott passed for 314 yards and two scores – one ach to Dallas Owens and Javon Williams.
Class 4A:
Andover Central won for a second consecutive week as the Jaguars raced past Arkansas City, 35-14. Jaxson Green rushed 18 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Jaguars. Max Olson passed for 140 yards and threw touchdown passes to Noah Sawdy and Cooper Mason. Andover Central will host Valley Center (2-1) this week.
Labette County built a two-score lead and defeated Pittsburg High for the first time in school history. The Grizzlies outlasted the Purple Dragons, 20-13. Aaron Wyrick rushed for two touchdowns and Tayton Claibourn added the third as the Grizzlies improved to 3-0 despite totaling only 146 yards of total offense. Pittsburg was led by Jamarcus Davis who rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Mulvane scored in each quarter in getting past Towanda-Circle, 43-16. The Wildcats turned in a strong defensive effort intercepting Circle four times and limiting the Thunderbirds to 12 net rush yards on 17 attempts. Mulvane will travel to Augusta this week in search of a third consecutive win.
Eudora picked up a key Frontier League victory in defeating Spring Hill, 24-14. The Cardinals have won two straight since a season-opening loss to Topeka Hayden. Eudora limited Spring Hill to 8 of 19 passing on the night. Eudora has another big league test against Ottawa this week.
Class 3A:
Hesston outscored Hillsboro, 57-29, on Friday night. Jerick Humphreys completed 18 of 20 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for four touchdowns as part of his 71 rushing yards on 11 attempts. The Swathers were led by Blayne Wilson’s 109 rushing yards with two scores.
Pratt scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in rolling past Larned, 41-6. Cresten Pore passed for 149 yards and two scores – one each to Cade Liggett and Caleb Strong. Liggett also added 104 yards rushing and a touchdown. Kyler Barker and Arley Morrell each rushed for scores for the Greenbacks.
Prairie View outscored then No. 3 Wellsville 30-20 in the second half en route to a 42-35 win. Parker Schwarz rushed 26 times for 255 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Buffalo ground attack. Wyatt Attebery added 114 yards and a score on six carries and Josh Goodwin added a rushing score. Prairie View rushed for 437 yards on the night. Wellsville was led by Armond Graves’ 201 yards and three scours on the ground.
Wichita Trinity delivered the first victory for Coach Ryan Schadler as the Knights topped Kingman, 30-27. Yamnoel Oyola rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 15 attempts for Trinity. Quarterback Zac Zimmerman added 87 rush yards and a score and passed for 156 yards on the night.
Chaparral scored all 42 points in the first half in cruising past Belle Plaine, 42-20. The Roadrunners racked up 237 rush yards distributed across 10 ball carriers. Daniel Schmidt rushed for two touchdowns, while Kenny Diaz had a team-high 62 yards. Trace Hadsall, Kale Greve, and Justin Ord each scored touchdowns. Schmidt also threw a touchdown pass to Mason Walker.
Class 2A:
Cherryvale scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Duncan to Brock Carrico to overtake Eureka, 14-8. The Chargers trailed until the middle of the fourth quarter when Duncan found Carrico. Duncan also ran for a touchdown for Cherryvale’s first score. He finished with a game-high 87 yards on the ground.
Russell defeated significantly depleted Plainville, 28-6. Russell, one of the state’s early season surprises, improved to 3-0. The game had two delays that totaled just over 75 minutes, per KRSL. Senior quarterback Trey Zorn passed for 350 yards and three scores. Plus, Walker Middleton returned a punt 41 yards for a score. The Broncos held Plainville to under two yards a pass attempt. Russell is 3-0 for the first time in 25 years.
Caney Valley held off Neodesha, 22-6. The Blue Streaks had opened 2-0 for the first time since 2015. That is also the last year Neodesha had defeated Caney Valley. CV held Neodesha to 28 carries for 54 rushing yards and 11 of 28 passing.
Council Grove continued its outstanding early season play and stingy defense with a 39-7 win against Cair Paravel. Council Grove has permitted just 14 points in three weeks. The Braves outgained Cair Paravel, 386-151. Reid Buttrey completed 15 of 23 passes for 215 yards and three scores against one interception. Grady Kepley recorded five catches for 91 yards and pair of touchdowns. Brady Doornbos finished with seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and two sacks. Blaise French recovered an offensive fumble and went 43 yards for a score.
Class 1A:
Uniontown improved to 2-1 with a 30-14 win over Central Heights. The Eagles have a winning record for the first time in five seasons. Uniontown will open district play by hosting Southeast-Cherokee. The Eagles haven’t posted three consecutive wins snice a 9-1 season back in 2015.
Ellinwood scored three touchdowns in the first quarter before their game with Osawatomie was called due to severe weather. The Eagles were led by Austin Brack’s 137 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries. Ellinwood will open district play with an unbeaten showdown against Sterling.
After a rain delay of nearly two and a half hours, Thomas More Prep-Marian held on to beat Phillipsburg, 20-19, at Fort Hays State University’s Lewis Field Stadium. It marks the first time since at least 1970 that TMP has defeated Norton and Phillipsburg in the same year. The Monarchs received more than 100 rushing yards from Jackson Gillespie. Carson Liles kicked two field goals, including one just before halftime. TMP took a 20-13 lead with two and a half minutes left after a 38-yard reception to Nash Dreiling and a three-yard touchdown run by Isaac Purinton. Phillipsburg responded with a 69-yard TD run. The Panthers elected to go for two with 1;37 left, and TMP stopped Phillipsburg just shy of the goal line.
Class 8-man I
Flinthills scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and blanked Sedan, 30-0, in a game called due to lightning in the third quarter. Beau Hall rushed for three touchdowns passes on the night for the Mustangs. Ty Finley added the other Flinthills’ touchdown on a short reception.
Defending state champion Hoxie defeated Ellis, 46-32, for its first win of the season. Ellis moved to 0-3. Hoxie took major graduation losses from its 13-0 squad. Chase Meyer, a first-year starting quarterback, accounted for more than 250 yards of total offense. He rushed and passed for two scores apiece. Ellis quarterback Trenton Schartz finished with 346 yards of total offense and four scores.
WaKeeney-Trego improved to 3-0 with a key 40-34 road win versus Atwood-Rawlins County. Atwood outgained WaKeeney, 473-322. However, both teams had six turnovers. Standout freshman Jared Aschenbrenner returned a kickoff for a score for the Golden Eagles. Atwood sophomore Dominique Paz recorded three rushing touchdowns along with 33 carries for 173 yards. Senior Austin Chumley delivered 20 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown. Wakeeney junior Jack Conness finished with 14 rushes for 91 yards and two scores. Trego senior quarterback Ashton Wynn accounted for 144 passing, 71 rushing, one passing and one rushing score.
Oswego defeated Colony-Crest, 45-0, in a game called in the third quarter. Oswego led 24-0 after the first quarter and 38-0 at halftime. Sophomore Demitri Williamson recorded six carries for 100 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Lincoln defeated Beloit-St. John’s Tipton Catholic, 62-14. Lincoln junior Jeremiah Miller had another huge game with eight of 16 passing for 106 yards with two scores against one interception. Plus, he rushed 14 times for 160 yards and three TDs. Lincoln finished with 508 yards of total offense. Lincoln is 3-0 and has outscored teams, 192-28. The Leopards are 3-0 for the first time since 2015, per Kansas Football History.
Class 8-man II
Frankfort picked up its first win of the season with a 46-0 shutout of Solomon. The Wildcats scored 30 points in the first quarter. Wes Anderson passed for 136 yards and three touchdowns and added 75 yards rushing and two scores. Porter Colvin caught three passes for 69 yards and two scores. Frankfort held the Gorillas to 70 yards of total offense.
Marmaton Valley improved to 3-0 and headlines District 1. The Wildcats defeated Northeast-Arma, 70-24. Senior Tyler Lord completed 11 of 18 passes for 100 yards and a score. He also rushed 18 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Cooper Schraff finished with 12 carries for 186 yards and four TDs.
Argonia-Attica held off Cedar Vale-Dexter, 36-28. CVD led 22-16 after the first quarter, while A&A took a 30-28 at halftime. The score remained the same in the third quarter. The Titans tacked on another TD in the fourth. Junior Maddex Hemberger finished with 155 passing yards and two scores, along with 11 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Logan-Palco defeated Lakeside-Downs, 38-16. The game was tied at eight after the first quarter and 16 all at halftime. Logan-Palco pulled away with 14 unanswered in the third quarter. The Trojans held Lakeside to 116 yards of total offense. Logan-Palco rushed 49 times for 249 yards. Senior Carson Knipp delivered 19 carries for 91 yards and two scores. Senior Case Ashmore finished with 20 rushes for 89 yards and two TDs.
6-Man
Peabody-Burns defeated Marais des Cygnes Valley, 51-6. Junior Dalton Philpott rushed eight times for 205 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Aiden Hurst, a former quarterback, delivered six carries for 125 yards and a score.
Non-KSHSAA
Christ Prep Academy scored five first-half touchdowns in routing Parsons, 52-6, on Saturday. The Patriots turned in a strong defensive effort in forcing six Viking turnovers on the afternoon, including three interceptions and three fumbles. Christ Prep held Parsons to 74 rush yards and just three of ten passing for 29 yards.
Reno County defeated Fairfield, 62-12, in a game that ended in the third quarter. RC led 21-0 after the first quarter and 42-12 at halftime. Junior quarterback Bo Smith completed 14 of 16 passes for 219 yards and five touchdowns against no interceptions.
