After putting their season opener on hold for 24 hours due to rain and lightning, the St. Mary's - Colgan Panthers used big plays early and often in a 34-0 home victory of the Girard Trojans in week one.

Quarterback Nate Arnold hit Zach Smith for a 43 yard pass play on the opening drive which lead to a 12 yard scoring strike to Jesse Newcomb on the next play. The Panthers also got touchdowns on a 45 yard run and 80 yard kick-off return from Zach Smith, a 55 yard punt return from Andy Farmer, and a 53 yard scamper from Christian Smith.

The Panthers' win, coupled with Meade's 36-6 road loss to Canadian, TX, was enough for the two teams to switch places in our Week 1 Class 2A rankings.

In class 5A, six-time defending champion Hutchinson fell to Rockhurst 29-28 in overtime. Even with a loss, the impressive showing versus a veteran Rockhurst squad keeps the Salthawks in the top spot just ahead of Gardner-Edgerton, who was dominant in a 49-7 win over Blue Valley West.

The rest of our preseason #1 ranked teams were victorious in their season openers. Click here to view our detailed Top 5 rankings for every class in the state.
