Week 9’s action brought no change in the top-5 of the rankings, outside of topsy-turvy Class 3A, which continues to be the state’s deepest classification. In 3A, No. 2 Halstead and No. 3 Marysville both had its seasons end to Wichita Collegiate and Jefferson West, respectively. The majority of ranked teams cruised to victories by substantial margins.

Class 6A

All five Class 6A ranked teams won by at least 17 points.

No. 1 Derby defeated winless Wichita North, 69-7. Derby has 22 straight victories.

No. 2 Gardner-Edgerton beat Shawnee Mission North, 42-7. G-E gets a high-profile Round of 16 matchup versus Blue Valley North. Last year, BVN defeated the Trailblazers in the state quarterfinals.

No. 3 Lawrence Free State beat Wichita South, 34-12, though led 34-0 at halftime. Tyler Bowden became the Firebirds’ all-time single season leader in rushing yards and points scored.

No. 4 Lawrence briefly trailed early before Devin Neal scored back-to-back touchdowns with a 38-21 win versus Washburn Rural. Neal rushed 24 times for 194 yards.

No. 5 Topeka High defeated injury-plagued Garden City, 48-14. Ky Thomas rushed for 190 yards. Topeka gets a rematch with Junction City, which gave the Trojans its only loss.

Class 5A

All 5A ranked teams won by at least 40 points.

No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas beat winless Highland Park, 63-0. Aquinas has 20 consecutive wins.

No. 2 Wichita Northwest earned its second win versus Kapaun Mt. Carmel this year with a 55-14 victory. Northwest gets another rematch with Great Bend this week. The Grizzlies defeated GB, 31-0, in the regular season.

No. 3 Bishop Carroll beat Valley Center, 49-7. Carroll gets Andover, ranked No. 12 in 5A West, after the Trojans upset No. 5 West Salina Central. Carroll and Andover have both permitted under 13 points a contest.

No. 4 Mill Valley rolled over Topeka West, 52-0. MV will face Olathe West, on a six-game winning streak. MV has won five in a row.

No. 5 De Soto beat K.C. Turner, 62-22. The Wildcats beat Turner, 71-0, in Week 3. This week, De Soto will face Shawnee Heights for the second time. De Soto beat Shawnee Heights, 59-14, in Week 7.

Class 4A

All five ranked teams won by at least 35 points.

No. 1 Bishop Miege defeated Labette County, 67-13. It marked the third straight year the Stags beat LC in Week 9 or later.

No. 2 McPherson earned its second big win versus Abilene this year with a 63-7 victory.

No. 3 Paola beat Ottawa, 56-9. In Week 3, Paola won at Ottawa, 56-3.

No. 4 Tonganoxie easily defeated Baldwin, 49-0, two weeks after the Chieftains won at Baldwin, 55-0. Tonganoxie running back Cooper Cunningham has cleared 100 yards and scored a rushing touchdown in every game.

No. 5 Andover Central scored 42 points in the first half and beat Towanda-Circle, 42-7.


Class 3A

Andale stayed at No. 1, but rest of the classification again went through changes. Last week, Halstead was second, Marysville third, Frontenac fourth and Colby fifth.

This week, Andale is again No. 1, Topeka Hayden vaulted back in the rankings all the way to second, Frontenac stands third, Colby fourth and Jefferson West is into the poll at No. 5.

Halstead lost to unranked Wichita Collegiate, and Jefferson West defeated Marysville. This week, Jefferson West will face Topeka Hayden. In district play, Hayden held on in the final seconds for a 13-6 victory in Week 5. Hayden has never lost to JW in school history.

All five teams will have a rematch this week.

No. 1 Andale beat Clay Center, 68-7, and now gets district foe Clearwater. Andale defeated Clearwater and standout quarterback Tanner Cash, 50-12, in Week 7.

No. 2 Hayden beat two-time defending state champion Sabetha, 35-0.

No. 3 Frontenac beat Girard, 34-0, and stayed undefeated. The Raiders will face Galena this week. Frontenac won at Galena, 27-14, in Week 4.

No. 4 Colby, with its best season in 35 years, beat Nickerson, 42-0. Colby will face Beloit this week. The Eagles had a 21-20 victory versus Beloit in district play.

No. 5 Jefferson West beat Marysville, 20-14. Marysville had the lead, but JW scored to close to 14-12. Then, the Tigers blocked a punt for a 20-14 lead with 1:20 left in the third quarter.

Class 2A

All five teams won by at least 18 points.

No. 1 Hoisington had another big game from Wyatt Pedigo with 210 rushing yards. The Cardinals defeated Southwestern Heights, 47-0.

No. 2 Silver Lake had another blowout win with a 68-8 victory versus Jayhawk-Linn.

No. 3 Garden Plain earned a 61-7 victory versus Fredonia.

No. 4 Riley County beat Pleasant Ridge, 38-20. RC led just 8-6 at halftime before it pulled away in the second half.

No. 5 Humboldt received 203 rushing yards from Conor Haviland and beat Richmond-Central Heights, 70-8.

Class 1A

Only three of the ranked teams played. No. 2 Olpe had a forfeit win versus Yates Center, which has struggled with numbers. No. 5 Sedgwick had a Week 9 bye for the second straight fall.

No. 1 Smith Center steadily pulled away from La Crosse with a 35-14 victory.

No. 3 Plainville rolled over Sacred Heart, 56-7, and led 35-0 after the first quarter.

No. 4 Centralia beat Troy, 50-0, the second straight win versus the Trojans this year.

Eight-Man, Division I

All five teams won by the 45-point margin – and the top-four squads did not allow a point.

No. 1 Canton-Galva earned its second 46-0 victory versus Chase County this year.

No. 2 St. Francis also beat Washington County, 46-0.

No. 3 Coldwater-South Central easily beat West Elk, 47-0.

No. 4 Madison had a postseason rematch with Solomon. Last year, the Gorillas beat Madison, 30-26. This time, Madison won 57-0.

No. 5 Clifton-Clyde lost to Hoxie, 22-20, in Week 10 last year. This time, Clifton-Clyde easily won, 66-20. Hoxie had its first losing record since it moved to eight-man football in 2010.

Eight-Man, Division II

All five teams won by the 45-point margin.

No. 1 Osborne scored 32 points in the first quarter and won 56-8 against Wallace County.

No. 2 Axtell led 22-0 after the first quarter and beat Downs-Lakeside, 52-0.

No. 3 Hanover beat Pike Valley, 48-0. In Week 1, Hanover defeated Pike Valley, 58-14. Hanover gets a rematch versus district and league foe Frankfort. Hanover beat Frankfort, 52-34, in Week 8.

No. 4 Frankfort beat Mankato-Rock Hills, 54-8. Frankfort standout running back Garret Dalinghaus rushed for 181 yards. Frankfort held Rylee Whelchel to just 26 rushing yards.

No. 5 St. Paul continued to roll versus southeast Kansas teams with a 64-0 win against Hartford.
