Smith Center miscues and a fired-up Centralia team ended the nation's longest active winning streak at 79 games Saturday afternoon at Ft. Hays State's Lewis Field Stadium as the Panthers upset the Redmen 20-12 in overtime.
The Panthers used a nice mix of ground game and air attack as quarterback Tyler Glatczak and running back Phillip Steinlage fueled a multiple look offense that gained yards with great play up front.
A Redmen secondary thinned by injuries to twins Dereck and Aaron McNary was challenged by the Panther passing game, but it was the Centralia defense that came up big forcing several key turnovers including a fumble on Smith Center's first play of the overtime after Tyler Glatczak rushed for a touchdown on third down and hit brother Michael for the two-point conversion to go up 20-12 in overtime.
Smith Center kicker Timur Schubart kicked a field goal with 49 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The Redmen's win streak of 79 straight games is the longest in Kansas high school history.
