Kpreps.com would like to congratulate all of the state champions and runners-up for the outstanding accomplishment of reaching high school football’s biggest stage.

This will mark our final rankings for the 2012 season. Below you’ll find the final rankings as well as our preseason rankings for each class made some 14 weeks ago.

Class 6A

Congratulations to Tim Callaghan and the Shawnee Mission West Vikings for winning the 6A state title with a 19-14 win over Hutchinson. The Vikings dominated the second half and A.J. Verdini and Andre Maloney punched across touchdowns to propel SM West to the win. Bret Sterbach led the Vikings with 273 yards rushing in the game.

Class 5A

Bishop Carroll rolled through the season undefeated with their closest margin of victory being 24 points in the Sub-State semifinal win over Salina South.  The Eagles rolled to a 60-21 victory in the 5A title game over Bishop Miege. Quaterback Zeke Palmer threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 146 yards for Carroll which led 40-7 at halftime and 60-7 after three quarters.  It is Bishop Carroll’s first football title since 1978.

Class 4A

Holton completed a perfect 14-0 season with a 21-0 shutout of Eudora in the 4A State Championship game.  The Wildcats led 7-0 at halftime but Jaxon Wright and Lane Lassiter added touchdown runs in the third and fourth quarters respectively to secure the win for Holton.  It was the Wildcats’ third state football title and first since 2005. Eudora fell in the 4A State Championship game for the second consecutive season; last year losing to Rose Hill by an identical 21-0 score.

Class 3A

Scott City rallied from down 21-0 to top Silver Lake 28-21 and claim the schools’ first state football title since 1991.  Quarterback Brett O’Neil hit tight end Drew Kite on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin for the Beavers.  Scott City drove deep into Silver Lake territory four times in the game only to be turned away by a strong Eagle defense.

Class 2-1A

Congratulations to Scott Moshier and the Meade Buffaloes in capturing the 2-1A state championship for the second time in the past three seasons.  The Buffaloes rallied from down 25-14 mid-way through the fourth quarter to defeat defending champion Centralia 28-25.  Chris Hardaway threw two touchdown passes in the game’s final three minutes to complete the comeback.  The final score came on a 24-yard strike to Jett Little with 36 seconds remaining after Meade blocked a Centralia attempt at a pooch punt. A penalty negated a big pass play on Centralia’s final drive and the Panthers eventually were intercepted to seal the win for Meade.

Class 8M-I

Ness City claimed the school's first state football championship with a 40-8 win over Rock Hills.  Dalton Gantz rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Koltyn Ratliff in the title game.  Ratliff also rushed for a touchdown and intercepted two passes on defense; one in the end zone and the other he returned for a touchdown on what was going to be a Rock Hills double pass attempt. The Ness City defense dominated the game and limited Rock Hills to just 68 rushing yards on 38 attempts.

Class 8M-II

Baileyville B&B used a stifiling defense to roll to its third state championship in the past five seasons.  B&B quarterback Dustin Rottinghaus rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown and passed for 110 and another score as the Falcons handled Thunder Ridge 28-6 in the title game. Dustin Deters added 73 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Falcons.  The B&B defense dominated up front and held Thunder Ridge fullback Trevor Lowe to 62 rushing yards on 23 attempts.
