KPI configures 6A & 5A brackets with objective model

Kansas Performance Index is a ranking system for Kansas high school activities. Consider us similar to the RPI in college basketball and strength of schedule in college football.

Two main differences separate KPI from all other ranking polls in the state, No. 1 - KPI is unbiased. We do not factor in a team's history, coach, location, demographics, etc. Points are purely determined by the current year’s scores, opponent's record, classification, result margin, and site. Second - KPI covers the entire state. We input all scores from every KSHSAA classified team 1A-6A. If your coach/AD/Principal/fan base won't speak up for you, then we will! On the other hand if they are overly confident, then our numbers can speak the truth.

KPI began in the fall of 2014 by posting schedules, scores, and our strength of schedule ranking system for every KSHSAA boys soccer program in the state. During the winter, we transferred this system to boys basketball and had tremendous results. Using our data we were able to correctly predict every boys state champion!

Seeding teams in football can be very difficult due to the low number of games played by each program. However, KPI can easily compare these teams based off of a strength of schedule format. Playing up or down classes is not as important as playing a "quality" opponent. For example, the reason for Pittsburg High to leave the SEK League should not bebecause their 4A games will count against them, rather it should be in order to schedule "quality" opponents to prepare themselves for a deep run in the playoffs. Another example is Bishop Miege. Even though their record is filled with 5A and 6A opponents, a closer look at the schedules of those teams shows that Miege's schedule isn't as difficult as it sounds (although I personally do feel that their KPI rank is way too low!).

We have placed all 5A and 6A schools in 16-team brackets using their results after Week 8 of the regular season to give you an idea of what a fair playoff system looks like. Teams are seeded by their KPI points first, then overall record, and last by point differential. We believe this is an accurate representation of what the state football playoffs should look like. If you're not a believer in the numbers, then we understand. If the numbers were always true, then the Royals would not have just won the World Series!
