Shawnee Mission West is the new team in the Class 6A poll this week as the Vikings handled former No. 5 Shawnee Mission East 31-14. The Vikings are now 7-1 on the season with their only loss coming to No. 3 Lawrence Free State back in Week 2. SM West also owns a win over No. 4 Lawrence earlier this season. Free State and Lawrence will hook up in Week 9 to decide the District 1 championship.
Last week’s top five showdown between No. 2 Salina South and No. 4 Hays turned out to be a one-sided affair. The second-ranked Cougars mauled the Indians 35-6 despite not having the services of the school’s all-time leading rusher in Cody Busby. Hays fell out of the 5A poll with the loss, and was replaced by Blue Valley West which rallied from down 28-14 in the final five minutes to edge Blue Valley Southwest, 29-28. St. Thomas Aquinas moved up one spot to No. 4 in this week’s poll after a 28-6 win over KC Turner.
Top-ranked Holton made a statement by dominating traditional power Topeka Hayden 27-0 on Friday night. The Wildcats held Hayden to under 100 yards of total offense in the game. The remaining ranked teams in 4A remained unchanged as only No. 4 Wichita Collegiate passed a test defeating defending champion Rose Hill 41-20.
The story of Week 8 in Class 3A and in the state was the performance of Conway Springs quarterback Tanner Wood. Wood set a state single-game rushing record in the Cardinals 84-56 win over Chaparral. The senior rushed for 659 yards and nine touchdowns in the win, breaking the old mark by 171 yards. The rest of the 3A poll remained unchanged.
Class 2-1A’s top five also remained unchaged as Stanton County’s 52-0 shutout of Syracuse was the least amount of points scored by any of the top five teams.
Ness City proved its mettle atop the 8-Man, Division-I poll with a 48-0 blanking of previously unbeaten Atwood-Rawlins County. The Eagles used three defensive touchdowns to overwhelm the Buffaloes. The only change in the Division-I poll was in the No. 5 spot as Central Plains upset previous No. 5 Solomon, 56-52. Pretty Prairie enters this week’s poll at No. 5, but the Bulldogs get a big road test at Solomon in Week 9.
Finally, Baileyville B&B remains atop the Division-II poll after surviving a shootout with rival Hanover, 52-46 in two overtimes. The Falcons trailed 38-22 in the third quarter, but scored 30 points in the fourth quarter and overtimes combined to remain unbeaten. Sharon Springs-Wallace County rolled over previously unbeaten Weskan 56-0 to remain at No. 2 in the poll.
