Class 6A is now without an unbeaten team as last week’s No. 4 Topeka High fell 27-13 to Manhattan. The Trojans’ loss allows Shawnee Mission East back in the 6A poll at No. 5 as the Lancers handled Shawnee Mission Northwest 34-7. SM East has a rivalry showdown at Shawnee Mission West (6-1) this week. The top three teams remain unchanged this week, while Lawrence is up one spot to No. 4 after a 20-point win over Leavenworth.
The top five in Class 5A remains unchanged this week, but No. 2 Salina South got quite the scare. The Cougars topped rival Salina Central 23-20 in overtime; connecting on a 20-yard field goal to tie the game as time expired in regulation. Salina South’s star running back Cody Busby left the game with an injury and did not return after halftime. The Cougars will need to be at full strength this week as they travel to take on No. 4 Hays. The Indians won the Western Athletic Conference title with a 31-13 win over Great Bend.
In Class 4A, top-ranked Holton had little trouble with a Wamego team that entered 5-1. The Wildcats rushed for more than 500 yards in blasting the Red Raiders 51-12. Third-ranked Mulvane rallied from behind to escape with a 27-21 road win over Winfield. Wichita Collegiate remains at No. 4 after defeating Wichita Trinity 28-17, and Fort Scott enters the poll at No. 5 after a 48-6 win over Anderson County. Last week’s fifth-ranked team St. James Academy was upset by Spring Hill 41-12 on Thursday night.
The Kpreps Game of the Week highlighted the Class 3A schedule as No. 4 Beloit escaped with a 32-27 win over previously unbeaten Phillipsburg. The Trojans trailed 27-12 in the second quarter before scoring 14 points in the final four minutes of the first half. Silver Lake and Scott City remain No. 1 and No. 2 after posting shutouts, and Garden Plain and Conway Springs remain in the top five after posting big wins in district openers.
Class 2-1A’s top-ranked La Crosse got a scare from Sterling, but the Leopards eventually won 42-28. Sophomore quarterback Jack Garcia threw for more than 200 yards as La Crosse remained unbeaten. Defending champion Centralia remained unbeaten with a 55-0 shutout of Troy. NFL Hall of Famer and former Centralia star John Riggins was on hand as the Panthers dedicated Riggins Field.
The 8-Man, Division-I poll again remains unchanged. Ness City rolled to a 52-6 win at WaKeeney-Trego, but may face a stern test this week when the Eagles travel to unbeaten Atwood-Rawlins County. Madison, South Haven, Marmaton Valley, and Solomon round out the top five after each posting blowout wins.
The 8-Man, Division-II top five remained unchanged this week as four teams posted shutout wins. Third-ranked Waverly’s game with Elk Valley was postponed until Monday due to bad weather. The Week 8 scheduled in Division-II is intriguing as No. 1 Baileyville B&B visits rival Hanover, No. 2 Sharon-Springs-Wallace County hosts unbeaten Weskan, and No. 5 Thunder Ridge hosts a 6-1 Northern Valley team.
