Class 6A
Chris Witten rushed for a game-high 154 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown as Wichita Heights knocked off Wichita Northwest 28-7. The Falcons also received strong rushing performances from Prentice Byrd and Tre King. Byrd rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and King added 67 yards on six carries. Northwest running back Deron Thompson led the Grizzlies with 92 yards on 24 carries.
Washburn Rural scored only one offensive touchdown and was outgained in total yardage 366-168, but the Junior Blues found a way to upset Topeka Seaman 22-14. Dale Henderson returned a Viking fumble 20 yards for a touchdown and later added a 14-yard scoring run for the Junior Blues. Rural led 15-7 in the third quarter when the Junior Blues blocked a Seaman field goal attempt and Konner Winkley returned it 70 yards for a touchdown and a 22-7 lead. Butch Rea rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass for the Vikings who lost their third straight game.
Gardner-Edgerton blasted Blue Valley North 55-7 on Friday night to even their record at 3-3. Talented junior running back Traevohn Wrench rushed for 284 yards and three touchdowns for the Trailblazers. Gardner-Edgerton led 21-0 at halftime, and expanded that lead to 41-7 entering the fourth quarter. Jared Hobby threw for more than 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Blazers.
Olathe East avenged last season’s Week 1 loss to Olathe North by knocking off the Eagles 14-3. Ryan Woodson and Hayden Fraizer scored touchdowns for the Hawks, but it was the East defense that was the story in limiting North to only a Jorge Rivera second-quarter field goal. The traditional powers continue to struggle on the season, as East improved to 2-4, while Olathe North fell to 1-5.
Manhattan outscored Shawnee Heights 45-35 thanks to a big night from quarterback Jacob Holloway. The senior signal caller threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns and added a 15-yard scoring run for the Indians. Manhattan led 17-14 at halftime, and outscored the T-Birds 28-21 in the second half. Shawnee Heights’ quarterback Kyle Geiger passed for 218 yards and two scores in the losing effort.
Class 5A
Pittsburg and Coffeyville-Field Kindley combined for 120 points in a shoot out won by the Purple Dragons, 67-53. Pittsburg led only 7-6 after the first quarter, but erupted for five touchdowns and 34 points in the second quarter. Not to be outdone, Coffeyville used its big play capability to put up 19 second-quarter points including a 92-yard kickoff return by speedster James Newton. Pittsburg led 41-25 at halftime, and extended their lead to 30 points, twice in the second half. The Golden Tornado outscored Pittsburg 22-12 in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Dragon quarterback Spencer Bernhardt threw for 234 yards and four touchdown passes in the game; two of which went to Zach Woods who had 156 yards receiving. Nado backup quarterback Nathan Finley threw three touchdown passes; two going to Darren Deffebaugh. Wesley Collins rushed for 184 yards and two scores for Field Kindley.
Braden Tormey threw a pair of first half touchdowns passes as Valley Center beat Goddard Eisenhower 14-6. Keaton Canaday paced the Hornet offense with 129 yards on the ground. Valley Center has won two games in a season for the first time since 2008.
Conley Wilkins rushed for 302 yards and four touchdowns as Blue Valley West staved off a late Bishop Miege rally to win 41-36. Wilkins had touchdown runs of 89, 60, 34, and five yards as the Jaguars built a 34-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Miege quarterback Montel Cozart completed 27 of 42 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns, but the Stags could not recover a late onside attempt and fell by five points.
KC Turner quarterback Paul Berry completed 19 of 23 attempts for 228 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears beat Tonganoxie 32-13. Berry also added 88 yards and a score as Turner built a 19-6 halftime lead. Tonganoxie’s Cole Holloway rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Malik Veal rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown as Salina Central shutout Andover Central 26-0. Nathan Garlow added a pair of touchdown runs for the Mustangs as part of his 69-yard night. Blake Meier threw for 140 yards for Andover Central, but the Jaguars were unable to get on the scoreboard. Andover Central has now lost three straight game entering district play.
Class 4A
Girard took control of the CNC League race by winning at Galena in a battle of 4-1 teams. The Trojans’ Anthony Scholes returned the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown and Girard never looked back in a 41-12 win. Scholes rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Tayler Lewis added 99 yards on the ground for Girard.
Cornell Brown rushed 29 times for 251 yards and three touchdowns as Baldwin beat Frontier League rival Louisburg, 31-14. Brown grinded out three short touchdown runs as the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the season. Louisburg scored all 14 points in the third quarter including a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Topeka Hayden won its second game of the season by beating Topeka Highland Park, 41-6. The Wildcats rushed for more than 340 yards in the game led by Reily Martin’s 79 yards and two touchdowns. Despite Hayden’s 2-4 record, the Wildcats will be a dangerous team come district play as three of their four losses have come to teams ranked in Class 5A or 6A at some point this season.
Cheney knocked off Chaparral 43-15 behind a strong performance from Tommy Hill. Hill rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns and caught an 80-yard touchdown pass as the Cardinals improved to 4-2. Cheney now enters a tough district where their three opponents are a combined 14-4.
Hesston outpaced Pratt 35-19 to even its record at 3-3. The Swathers were led by Ryan Schadler who rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns. John Birch also scored a pair of touchdowns for Hesston. The Greenbacks were led on offense by Skyler Dean who rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown, but finished just 8 of 20 passing for 38 yards.
Class 3A
St. Mary’s Colgan took advantage of five Columbus turnovers in a 30-7 homecoming win over the Titans. The Panthers scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull away. Colgan rushed for 212 yards in the game led by senior Connor Dayton’s 119 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
Tyler LaSalle connected with Aaron Hernandez on a 15-yard touchdown pass to secure Holcomb’s 35-25 win over Ulysses. The fourth-quarter strike to Hernandez came after the Longhorns recovered a Ulysses fumble at the Tiger 15-yard line, and gave Holcomb a 35-19 lead. LaSalle threw for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Ulysses was led by freshman Ian Rudzik’s 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Cimarron rallied from a 26-14 fourth-quarter deficit to top Elkhart 32-26 in Hi-Plains League action. The Bluejays scored 18 points in the final quarter thanks to two safeties and two Ty Clark touchdown runs. Clark rushed for 185 yards and three scores in the game, and returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown. Alex Gomez threw two touchdown passes to Justin Hum for Elkhart.
Norton’s Jacob Brooks scored from 4-yards out in overtime as the Blue Jays topped Colby, 26-23. Norton led 13-0 at halftime and extended their lead to 20-0 in the third quarter when Brooks broke free for a 60-yard score. Colby scored 20 consecutive points to tie the game and force overtime, but the Eagles had to settle for a Trek Keck 31-yard field goal in overtime. Brooks scored on Norton’s possession to give the Blue Jays their fifth win.
Bryce Chavis rushed for 246 yards and five touchdowns as Riley County outscored St. Marys 61-30 in Mid-East League action. Chavis scored on runs of 8, 11, 52, and 65 yards, and added a 66-yard touchdown pass. Sojaun Turentine led St. Marys with 237 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Class 2-1A
Smith Center edged Ell-Saline 20-18 in overtime thanks to a Payton Buckmaster touchdown run and two-point conversion. The Redmen survived the key District 6 contest when Ell-Saline missed a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation. Smith Center improved to 3-3 on the season, while Ell-Saline fell to 4-2.
Oakley took advantage of four St. Francis fumbles in the first half in building an 18-0 lead at the intermission. Keith Keller rushed for three touchdowns as the Plainsmen beat the Indians 30-6 in a key District 7 matchup. Oakley moved to 2-0 in district play, while St. Francis fell to 0-2.
Wabaunsee picked up its first win of the season with a 42-14 rout of Herington. Junior running back Ethan Miller carried 44 times for an incredible 439 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chargers. Miller pushed his season total to 993 yards and six touchdowns with his performance on Friday. Wabaunsee will try and repeat last season’s success in district play when the Chargers won their final four games to claim the second playoff spot.
Oskaloosa evened its district record at 1-1 with a 20-14 victory over Leavenworth-Immaculata. The Bears were led by sophomore Justin Sharp who rushed for 129 yards, while Seth Steward added 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Immaculata was led by freshman quarterback Drew Sachen who rushed for 78 yards and both Raider scores.
Valley Falls won for the second consecutive week as the Dragons defeated Pleasant Ridge 42-28. Valley Falls took advantage of four Pleasant Ridge turnovers in the game, including two interceptions and two fumbles. The Dragons scored 12 unanswered points in the decisive fourth quarter to pull away. The teams went into halftime tied at 22.
Class 8M-I
Minneola shut out last season’s state runner-up South Gray 48-0 behind another strong performance from Matt McClaren. The Wildcat senior quarterback rushed for 196 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Rebels. McClaren has now amassed 1,590 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns this season. Colton Dirks led South Gray with 174 yards on the ground.
Clifton-Clyde moved to 3-1 in District 4 play with a 50-28 win over Wakefield. Alex Deaver rushed for 183 yards and five touchdowns in the game. He also had 44 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and returned a kickoff 65 yards for a score. The Eagles will have a key district showdown with Osborne in Week 7.
Central Burden remained one of eight undefeated teams in Division-I with a 50-0 shutout of West Elk. Kasey Biddle threw for 49 yards and two touchdowns, and added 111 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the Raiders. Brett Magner added 109 yards and Austin Mettling 96 yards on the ground and each scored two touchdowns for Central Burden.
Pretty Prairie erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter to top Central Plains, 38-14. Alex Mains rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Mark Schnittker to propel the Bulldogs over the Oilers. Bryce Steiner threw two touchdown passes for Central Plains.
Oxford survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback from Sedan to win 26-24. The Wildcats led 20-0 before the Blue Devils got on the board with a Nick Kimple kickoff return for a touchdown. Oxford responded with a Daelyn Haskins touchdown run to make it 26-8. Sedan would score twice more as Austin Filtingberger rushed for a touchdown and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kimple, but the Blue Devils fell two points short.
Class 8M-II
Fowler built a 31-6 halftime lead and held on to beat Ingalls, 38-20. Goldbug quarterback Taylin Bird threw two touchdown passes to Jett Reese and added a 17-yard touchdown run. Tem Shetley added 128 yards rushing and a pair of touchdown runs for Fowler, and also kicked a 29-yard field goal.
Sam McKinney threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns as Weskan blasted Cheylin 50-0 in a statement game for the Coyotes. McKinney connected with Brandan Escamilla seven times for 114 yards and two scores, while Hayden Walker caught three passes for 78 yards and a score. McKinney also rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns on the night. The Weskan defense held Cheylin to 139 yards of total offense.
Cody Nieman tossed three touchdown passes as Hanover doubled-up Axtell 40-20 in a key District 1 contest. Nieman connected on scoring strikes to Mark Zarybnicky, Hunter Nicholson, and Gylan Goeckel as Hanover scored 32 points in the second a third quarters combined. Zarybnicky also added a fourth quarter touchdown run for the Wildcats. Axtell was led by Aaron Schmelzle who scored a touchdown rushing and passing.
South Barber took the upper hand in District 4 with a 30-6 win over Caldwell on Friday night. The Chieftains were led by Dylan Allison’s 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Allison also caught a touchdown pass from Peyton Yandel.
Colony-Crest scored 53 points in the first quarter in routing Elk Valley 58-0. The Lancers used a balanced rushing attack that produced more than 250 yards against the Lions. Kyle Hammond rushed five times for 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jordan Morton’s only carry went for a 61-yard score. In all, six different Lancers scored in the game. Elk Valley was led by sophomore Forrest Dowell who carried five times for 30 yards.
