Hutchinson is back on top in the 6A poll after rallying with a late touchdown to top Derby 31-28. Derby falls one spot to No. 2 with the narrow loss. In the other matchup between 6A ranked teams, Lawrence Free State shutout prior No. 3 ranked Shawnee Mission East, 28-0. The Firebirds are the new No. 3 team this week, followed by Topeka High which moved up one spot this week after beating 5A-ranked Emporia. Shawnee Mission East falls out of the rankings leaving room for Lawrence to enter at the No. 5 spot this week. The Chesty Lions beat Shawnee Mission South 32-15 behind another great performance from their quarterback Brad Strauss. Lawrence and Free State will play in two weeks to conclude district play.
In Class 5A, Emporia lost for the first time this season as Topeka High bested the Spartans 40-26. Emporia falls one spot to No. 3 in this week’s poll opening the door for Salina South to take over the second spot. The Cougars beat Newton 40-10. Hays and St. Thomas Aquinas switched places in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots this week. Hays blasted Dodge City 52-31, while Aquinas was beaten by two Blue Valley touchdowns in the final 4 minutes as the Tigers beat the Saints 29-28.
In Class 4A, Mulvane’s rally came up a few yards short as McPherson handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season, 35-30. McPherson moves up to No. 2 this week, while Mulvane falls just one spot to No. 3. Wichita Collegiate moves up one spot to No. 4 after edging Maize South 17-14, and St. James Academy enters the poll for the first time in school history after rallying with 17 late points to top previous No. 4 Eudora, 17-14.
For the first time this season the Class 3A rankings underwent some change. Garden Plain beat defending champion Conway Springs 41-21. As a result, the Owls moved up to No. 3 in this week’s poll followed by Beloit. The Trojans had no trouble with Southeast of Saline. Conway Springs fell two spots to No. 5 in the poll. Silver Lake and Scott City remain No. 1 and No. 2. Silver Lake beat previously unbeaten Rossville 32-12.
There was no change to the 2-1A top five this week as all five ranked teams won by at least 40 points. La Crosse, Meade, Lyndon, and Stanton County each picked up district wins, while Centralia topped 3A Atchison County.
The 8-Man, Division-I poll remains unchanged after Week 6 action. Ness City passed a stiff test from Hoxie in a 38-6 win. Madison rallied from 14 down to outscore Lebo 59-42 in their annual Lyon County League showdown. South Haven had no trouble with previously unbeaten Udall, as the Cardinals won 62-12. Marmaton Valley and Solomon remain in the fourth and fifth spots after blasting Uniontown and Canton-Galva, respectively.
Three of the top five in 8-Man, Division-II posted shutouts in Week 6. Top-ranked Baileyville B&B held Frankfort to just 42 yards of total offense in a 50-0 shutout. Sharon Springs-Wallace County had no trouble with Tribune-Greeley County, and No. 5 Thunder Ridge handled Stockton 48-0. Third-ranked Waverly rolled past Tyro Christian, while No. 4 Otis-Bison beat rival Victoria 44-12 behind 274 yards rushing and five touchdowns from Dylan Wissman.
