Class 6A
Calil Burnett broke a 7-7 tie with a 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to propel Wichita East to a 14-7 win over Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Burnett finished the night with 80 yards on six carries and the decisive score. Neither team could get much going on offense as East and Kapaun combined for 263 yards of total offense in the game.
Greyson Tempel threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns as Garden City handled Liberal 37-14. Tempel connected on scoring strikes to three different receivers, including his twin brother Dustin who caught seven passes for 123 yards. Greyson also added 168 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Britton Abbott rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 233 yards for Liberal.
Maize topped Salina Central 28-21 as Kendall Stewart hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from Conner Lungwitz with only two seconds remaining. Garrett Thompson intercepted Salina Central quarterback Mark Vaughn and returned it to midfield with just 17 seconds left. Maize gained nine yards on the first play, then Lungwitz connected with Stewart on the next play for the winning score. Lungwitz threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns on the night as the Eagles improved to 3-2.
Olathe Northwest picked up its first win of the season by outscoring Shawnee Mission Northwest, 49-23. Quarterback Holdyn Halperin threw for more than 200 yards for the Ravens. Olathe Northwest running back Alex Pruss scored four touchdowns on the night.
Washburn Rural scored the only points of the second half on a Blake Peterson to Drew Lewis 56-yard touchdown strike to lift the Junior Blues to a 27-20 win over Shawnee Heights. Rural and the T-Birds played to a 20-20 halftime tie after the Junior Blues rallied for 20 points in the second quarter. Peterson and Lewis hooked up for a 7-yard touchdown in the quarter, and Peterson added a short touchdown run. Heights took advantage of two early Rural turnovers to jump to a 14-0 lead.
Class 5A
Toshi Hayashi connected on a 21-yard field goal on an untimed down as Andover edged rival Andover Central 17-14. The untimed down came after the Jaguars were called for roughing Hayashi as his missed his first game-winning attempt as time expired. The Trojans received 94 yards rushing and a touchdown from Mason Biberstein. Andover improved to 4-1 with the win.
Skyler Windmiller completed 17 of 25 attempts for 271 yards and six touchdowns as his Mill Valley Jaguars routed Bonner Springs, 49-12. L.J. Hatch finished with three receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns for the Jaguars. Staton Rebeck also hauled in three touchdown passes on the night. Jordan Jackson rushed for 163 yards and a score, and threw a touchdown pass for Bonner Springs.
Sophomore Alex Barnes rushed eight times for 184 yards and four touchdowns as Pittsburg had little trouble with Parsons. The Purple Dragons celebrated homecoming by blasting the Vikings 69-6. Parsons remains winless on the season and has surrendered 293 points or 58.6 points per game.
Blue Valley Southwest picked up a key Eastern Kansas League win as the Timberwolves edged Bishop Miege, 24-21. Southwest led 14-10 at halftime before Miege quarterback Montell Cozart put the Stags in the lead with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Blake Schneiders. Blue Valley Southwest would respond with two Aaron Ramsey touchdown runs to take a 24-14 lead. Cozart would add his second rushing touchdown late in the game, but the Stags came up three points short.
Great Bend improved to 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 24-7 road win at Dodge City. Kelan Newton put Dodge City up early on a 75-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Duckett. The Panthers would tie the game at 7 by halftime as Jonathan Allende scored from 30 yards out. Great Bend would then outscore the Red Demons 17-0 in the second half on touchdown runs by Josh Lopez and Bryce Hofmeister.
Class 4A
Wamego scored 34 first-half points in routing North Central Kansas League rival Abilene 42-20. Red Raider quarterback Marshall Wethington threw for more than 200 yards and two scores, and Kameron Quinn added 108 yards rushing and a touchdown. Wamego improved to 4-1 after posting back-to-back 1-8 seasons in 2010 and 2011.
Wellington picked up its first win of the season by beating Towanda Circle 36-12. Quarterback Trevor Nance connected twice on touchdown passes to Nick Becker as the Crusaders built a 22-6 halftime lead. Becker added a pair of touchdown runs in the game and Nance added a short touchdown run of his own as Wellington pulled away after Circle had closed within 22-12.
In his first season at Tonganoxie, Al Troyer’s Chiefans are now 2-3 and have equaled their win total for the past two seasons combined. On Friday, Tonganoxie knocked off Bishop Ward 30-16 behind a big night from quarterback Tyler Ford. For threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns; one of which went to Shane Levy who caught six passes for 175 yards.
Frontenac won its second straight game with a 56-0 shutout of Erie. The Raiders dominated in the trenches as Frontenac rushed for 225 yards on the night while holding the Red Devils to negative 20 yards rushing. Taylor Johnson rushed for 43 yards and two scores, while quarterback Devon Keith added 76 yards and a score on the ground. Senior lineman Blake Barto scored two touchdowns off of Erie fumbles.
Maize South posted its third shutout of the season by shutting down Goddard, 42-0. The Mavericks improved to 5-0 with the win, and matched a season-high win total in the school’s brief three-year history. Maize South has surrendered only 24 points through five games this season, but will be tested by the several offensive weapons of Wichita Collegiate in Week 6. Goddard dropped their third consecutive game after opening the season with wins over Wellington and Valley Center.
Class 3A
Phillipsburg remained unbeaten with a 27-6 road win at Hoisington. The Panthers took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind touchdown runs from Michael Dusin and Hunter Kohler. The Cardinals would pull within 14-6 at halftime as Hagan Hanzlick scored on a short touchdown run. Phillipsburg would add two Justin Juenemann field goals in the fourth quarter before Tanner Crist blocked and recovered a Hoisington punt in the end zone to put the game away. Hanzlick led all rushers with 127 yards on the night.
Tyler LaSalle threw for 218 yards and four touchdowns as Holcomb topped Colby 31-3. LaSalle connected with Heath Tucker three times on scoring strikes of 59, 34, and 17 yards. Tucker also added a 27-yard field goal for the Longhorns. Holcomb improves to 4-1 on the season and will travel to Ulysses in Week 6.
Zach Halter’s fourth-quarter interception thwarted an Atchison County drive and propelled Riverside to a 16-9 victory over the Tigers in a battle of Delaware Valley League unbeatens. Riverside extended an 8-6 halftime lead as Dakota Pummell’s short touchdown run gave the Cyclones a 16-6 lead. Atchison County would add a Jake Hansen field goal to pull within 16-9, and after a Riverside punt the Tigers drove deep into Cyclone territory before Halter’s interception. Andrae McGaughy led Riverside with 129 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Wellsville outscored Anderson County 24-12 in the second half to slip by the Bulldogs 30-25 in Pioneer League play. The Eagles were led by Shane Hillman who rushed for 165 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Luke Meyer threw for 55 yards and a touchdown for Wellsville.
Moundridge picked up its first win of the season by outscoring Whitewater Remington 35-26 in Heart of America League action. Daniel Ratzlaff and Garrett Higgins each rushed for more than 100 yards as the Wildcats controlled the line of scrimmage. Ratzlaff rushed for 163 yards and three scores, while Higgins produced 122 yards and two touchdowns. Remington is still looking for its first win of the season.
Class 2-1A
Onaga scored 31 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Northern Heights in a game that is thought that might decide the District 3 title. The Buffaloes’ Thomas Eisenbarth rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Northern Heights’ quarterback Luke Larson threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but also was intercepted twice. Mitchell Kufahl returned an interception 50 yards for a score for Onaga.
Staying in Class 2-1A, District 3, Chase County survived Herington for a thrilling 64-58 double overtime win. The Bulldogs and Railers each came into this game winless, but put on a show in a game that was close throughout. Chase County led 29-28 at halftime, and 43-42 at the end of the third quarter. Herington tied the game with a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime at 50-50. Each team added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the first overtime before the Bulldogs would win in double overtime. Chase County quarterback Troy Higgs threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns – connecting with Thomas Kirk eight times for 213 yards and all four scores. Sonny Guitierez rushed 32 times for 238 yards and five touchdowns for Chase County.
Smith Center opened 2-1A district play with a 30-0 shutout of Washington County. Grant Lambert rushed for three touchdowns and Kyler Atwood added a rushing score as the Redmen mythodically disposed of the Tigers. Smith Center led 12-0 at halftime before putting the game away with 12 more points in the third quarter.
Senior quarterback Marc Walbridge threw for 360 yards and six touchdown passes as McLouth knocked off Pleasant Ridge 47-20. Walbridge threw three touchdown passes in each half as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 on the season. Nick McAferty was on the receiving end of five of Walbridge’s touchdown passes as he caught 12 balls for more than 200 yards.
Not to be forgotten in 2-1A District 8, Elkhart improved to 4-1 with a 35-8 win over Sublette. The Wildcats scored 21 second-quarter points to break the game open. Junior Alex Gomez threw for 140 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore A.J. McKinley threw for 131 yards and two scores. McKinley also added 75 yards rushing, but Elkhart was led on the ground by Nick Lewis who rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown. Lewis also caught eight passes for 113 yards and a score.
Class 8M-I
Hoxie outlasted WaKeeney-Trego 34-28 in three overtimes to open district play. Hoxie led 16-14 at halftime before the Golden Eagles took a 22-16 lead in the third quarter. Hoxie’s Steven Yergey-Dible scored to tie the game at 22 in the fourth quarter and send the game to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, both teams scored in the second. Chase Kennedy scored for the Indians, while Camerson Staples tied the game again for the Golden Eagles. Hoxie scored the decisive score in the third overtime when Kennedy hit Tyler Kaus. Yergey-Dible led the Indians with 148 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Staples carried 41 times for 173 yards and two scores for the Golden Eagles.
Lebo won a shootout with Flinthills 74-54 to improve to 3-0 in District 3 play. The Wolves did most of their damage on the ground as Walker Davies rushed for 155 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Jacob Gould threw for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns; both of which went to Tyson Robke who caught five balls for 117 yards. Lebo will take on Lyon County League rival Madison in Week 6.
The Central Plains Oliers exploded for 32 fourth-quarter points in putting away Canton-Galva, 56-12. The Oilers’ lead was only 24-12 after three quarters before a pair of Bryce Steiner touchdown runs sparked the onslaught. Central Plains also blocked a punt for a touchdown, and Layne Bieberle returned a punt 55 yards for the final score. Canton-Galva dropped its second straight game after beginning 3-0. The Eagles have only averaged 12.7 points per game in the last three games after scoring 126 points in their first two games.
Pretty Prairie dealt the Little River Redskins their first loss of the season with a 26-8 victory to open district play. The Bulldogs were led by Mark Schnittker’s 112 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Schnittker scored twice in the first half as Pretty Prairie built a 20-8 lead. Little River rushed for 224 yards in the loss, led by Ethan Wright’s 85 yards on 16 carries. Chet Cordell recorded 23 tackles on defense for Little River.
Another game, another eye-opening performance from Minneola’s Matt McClaren. The senior rushed 20 times for 315 yards and six touchdowns as the Wildcats blasted Deerfield, 54-6. McClaren now has 1,394 yards and 26 touchdowns through five games this season.
Class 8M-II
Eriq Perez’s fourth-quarter touchdown run propelled Beloit St. John’s-Tipton to a 32-28 win over Northern Valley. St. John’s-Tipton took an 18-8 lead into halftime after Perez touchdown reception, and a Conor Eilert rushing touchdown and blocked punt return for a score. Northern Valley would take the lead by outscoring the Bluejays 14-0 in the third quarter. The Huskies led 28-26 before Perez scored the winning touchdown from seven yards out.
Sam McKinney threw for 181 yards and five touchdowns as Weskan remained unbeaten with a 52-16 win over Triplains-Brewster. The Coyotes scored 30 points in the first quarter in the win. Hayden Walker caught five passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns for Weskan.
The Victoria Knights separated themselves from Sylvan-Lucas Unified with 26 points in the second quarter of their 58-12 district win. Quarterback Sam Ottley continues to pick up the slack for injured running back Dalton Dreling. Ottley rushed for 200 yards and six touchdowns for the Knights in the win. Victoria takes on Otis-Bison in Week 6.
Cunningham outscored Norwich 78-48 to move to 2-1 in district play. The Wildcats’ senior quarterback Nick Huhman was impressive in completing 14 of 18 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 21 times for 159 yards and four touchdowns, and had three interceptions on defense. Cunningham was led on the ground by Jordan Schaller who rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and had 86 receiving yards and a score. Norwich freshman quarterback Jacob Norris threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, but was also intercepted five times on the night. Norris also led the Eagles in rushing with 87 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Depriest had nine receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
In a wild second quarter, Frankfort outscored Blue Valley Randolph 34-26 as the Wildcats and Rams went into the locker rooms tied at 40. Blue Valley Randolph controlled the second half, outscoring Frankfort 30-12 en route to a 70-52 win. It was Frankfort’s first loss of the season. Marshall Carey rushed for 238 yards and two scores, and Levi Peter added 193 yards on the ground and five touchdowns for Blue Valley. Lucas Adams and Callahan Brown each scored four touchdowns a piece in a losing effort for Frankfort. Adams rushed for 157 yards in the game.
