Salina South’s Cody Busby rushed for nearly 150 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Cougars shocked Hutchinson 35-10 at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson.
After the Salthawks took an early 7-0 lead on a Dakota Brower touchdown run, South answered with two touchdown runs from Busby to lead 14-7.
Hutchison would add a field goal as the first half expired to pull within 14-10, but it would be the Salthawks final points of the night.
Busby opened the second half by hitting Zach Nachbar on a 44-yard pass play which set his third touchdown run of the night.
Trailing 21-10, Hutchinson seemed to be primed to answer, but on fourth-and-goal at the Cougar 1-yard line, Jamison Likes was tackled for a 4-yard loss and all the momentum went back to the green and gold.
Salina South immediately tried to seal the game by driving deep into Salthawk territory before losing a fumble. The Salthawks, however, could not capitalize on the turnover.
Early in the fourth quarter, Cougar quarterback Justin Stonebreaker hit Nachbar on a 46-yard touchdown pass to lift the South lead to 28-10.
All that was left was Busby to cap his performance with a fourth-touchdown run with more than four minute remaining as Class 5A’s fourth-ranked Cougars improved to 4-1.
Hutchinson falls to 3-2 on the season and faces second-ranked Derby next week in a 6A showdown.

In the another game featuring a pair of ranked teams, No. 3 Meade went on the road to Johnson City and handed No. 2 Stanton County a 28-6 loss.
The Buffaloes took control early on as Trevin Wiens sandwiched two long touchdown runs of 73 and 54 yards around a Chris Hardaway score as Meade built a 21-6 lead before halftime.
But that’s when the Buffaloes may have put the game away.
Quarterback Hardaway hit Jett Little on a touchdown pass with four seconds remaining in the first half as Meade went on to lead and eventually win, 28-6.
Wiens rushed for 223 yards on the night to lead the Buffaloes.

Perhaps the game of the night occurred in the Centennial League where 5A’s No. 2 Emporia took on traditional 4A power Topeka Hayden.
Despite beginning the season with a slow start, Hayden did not of the sort on Friday night. In fact, the Wildcats held leads of 14-0 and 21-7 before Emporia would tie the game at 21 on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Braxton Marstall to J.L. Savage.
The Spartans would take their first lead early in the fourth quarter on a short touchdown run by Dylan Jackson.
The Wildcats would answer.
Jacob Tetuan hit Jacob Head on a 35-yard touchdown pass to pull Hayden even again at 28.
Later, Philip Rineberg scored from three yards out to give the Wildcats a 35-28 lead with just over 2:30 remaining.
Emporia went to one of the state’s best in WR/DB Jerel Morrow. The Oklahoma State commit hauled in a 27-yard touchdown strike from Marstall to pull the Spartans within 35-34.
Jackson was thens successful on the two-point conversion run to give the Spartans a 36-35 lead.
Hayden would drive to the Emporia 17-yard line, but Morrow blocked Jacob Kirmer’s 35-yard field goal on the game’s final play and the Spartans held on for a 36-35 win.

In the Kpreps Game of the Week as voted on by the Fans, Class 2-1A’s No. 4 ranked Lyndon Tigers won at Olpe 40-6.
Skylar Farwell rushed for a pair of touchdowns and returned an interception for a third score as the Tigers rolled.
Lyndon rushed for nearly 400 yards on the night; led by Josh Owens’ 159 yards.
Olpe finally broke through on a Mitchell Argabright touchdown run in the fourth quarter. It was the first points that the Lyndon’s defense has allowed this season. The other six points came on a Mission Valley kickoff return for a touchdown in Week 1.

In maybe the wildest game of the night, Wichita Independent defeated Chaparral 61-58 on the game’s final play.
Chaparral led this game 36-35 at halftime before Independent eventually took a 55-44 lead in the fourth quarter.
The Roadrunners cut the Panthers’ lead to 55-51, and then eventually took a 58-55 lead with only 37 seconds remaining.
Independent would start deep in their own territory and after a couple of incompletions faced a fourth down with time for one last play.
The Panthers called a middle screen to Brice Dean which worked well enough to get into Chaparral territory, but as the Dean was being hit and eventually brought down, he lateraled to Panther offensive lineman Lueke Anderson who ran the rest of the way for the game’s winning score.

Other games of note; Maize topped Salina Central 28-21 as Kendall Stewart hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass with only two seconds remaining in the game.
Lawrence handed defending 6A champion Olathe South a second consecutive loss with a 34-27 win.
Andover had two opportunities to kick a game winning field goal over cross-town rival Andover Central, and the Trojans capitalized on the second one. Tied at 14, Andover lined up for a final field goal attempt, but a penalty on the first try allowed the Trojans to move close. The second kick was good and the Trojans escaped with a 17-14 win.
Girard flexed its muscles in the CNC League by shutting out St. Mary’s Colgan, 29-0. It was the first Trojan win over the Panthers since 1999. Colgan has lost two consecutive game for the first time since falling to Uniontown in the final regular season game of the 1998 season, and losing to Girard to open then 1999 campaign.
