Class 6A
The Blue Valley North Mustangs earned their first win of the season behind the arm of quarterback Cory Taubin. Blue Valley North’s signal caller threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 38 yards and two TDs in a 31-28 win against Blue Valley Southwest. Taubin scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard run with 1:28 left in the game. Blue Valley North’s Danny Weston caught seven balls for 174 yards. Aaron Ramsey led the Timberwolves offense with 108 yards and two touchdowns.
Blue Valley Northwest took advantage of three turnovers for a 28-21 win against Gardner-Edgerton. Huskies quarterback Alec Winsor passed for 181 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Blue Valley Northwest running back Reed Coda rushed for 120 yards and one touchdown. The Trailblazers were led by running back Traevohn Wrench with 191 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Blue Valley Northwest improved to 2-2. Gardner-Edgerton, which opened the season in the 6A rankings, dropped to 1-3 having lost three straight.
Dodge City got the best of Liberal in a 62-48 shootout. Red Demons quarterback Kelan Newton completed 21 of 28 passes for 225 yards and four TDs in the win. Liberal quarterback Britton Abbott passed for 414 yards but had three interceptions. The Liberal defense has allowed more than 40 points in all three of their losses.
Shawnee Mission South standout running back Gabe Guild rushed 44 times for 301 yards and three touchdowns as the Raiders beat Shawnee Mission Northwest 21-17. Guild, fresh off of a 236-yard performance a week ago, has 895 yards and seven touchdowns on 126 carries this season.
Wichita Heights rallied with two quick fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 14-12. Heights trailed 6-0 until Forlanda Parker hit Myron Singleton on a 42-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 7-6 lead with under three minutes to go. Heights’ Rashiid Arnold picked off Kapuan quarterback Coen Rasmussen and returned it for a 20-yard touchdown to put the Falcons up 14-6. Kapaun would add a late touchdown as Rasmussen hit Nick Heiland on a touchdown pass with less than 30 seconds remaining, but the two-point conversion attempt was stopped short.
Class 5A
Blue Valley running back Ryan McNerlin rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ 28-12 win against Bishop Miege. Blue Valley limited Bishop Miege to a pair of field goals in the first half, then pulled away with two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the win. Bishop Miege quarterback Montell Cozart passed for 240 yards and ran for 93 yards in the loss. The Tigers and Stags both have 2-2 records.
Hays broke a 21-all tie by intercepting a pass with a little more than a minute left, then scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion with 31 seconds left to beat Garden City 29-21. Hays quarterback Alex Delton ran for 113 yards and two TDs, while passing for another in the win. Garden City quarterback Greyson Tempel passed for 208 yards and rushed for 115 in the loss. Hays improved to 3-1, and Garden City dropped to 2-2.
Arkansas City quarterback Riley Dowler amassed nearly 350 yards of total offense in the Bulldogs 49-0 shutout of Goddard Eisenhower. Dowler completed 10 of 15 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 110 yards and five scores as the Bulldogs evened their record at 2-2. Ark City has not allowed a point in its two wins this season, while surrendering 21 points per game in its two losses.
Skyler Windmiller misfired on just one of his ten passes as Mill Valley throttled Tonganoxie 59-0 in Kaw Valley League play. Windmiller threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Jaguars won their third straight since a season-opening loss to Manhattan.
Great Bend shutout Wichita North 41-0 as the Panthers earned their third win of the season. Quarterback Bryce Beck led the Panther attack with 93 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 11 carries. Johnny Allende added 73 yards rushing and a pair of scores.
Class 4A
Maize South improved to 4-0 with a 33-21 win against 5A’s Andover Central. The Mavericks used a balanced rushing attack with three ball carriers running for more than 65 yards. Wes Phillips led the way with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries. The Maize South defense hadn’t allowed a touchdown through the first three weeks.
Anthony Scholes rushed for 237 yards and three touchdowns as Girard blasted previously unbeaten Southeast-Cherokee 42-0. The Trojans defense held the Lancers’ passing attack to just 85 yards on 9 of 28 completions and intercepted Southeast three times. Girard’s Trenton Stolte caught two Brayden Johnson touchdown passes as part of his three-catch, 63-yard night.
Labette County ended a two-game losing streak to in-county rival Parsons with a 49-8 win. Senior Dontae Johnson caught a touchdown pass, returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown, and returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a score. Johnson also had an interception on defense. Tyler Cares led the Grizzlies with 94 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Defending 4A champion Rose Hill notched its first win of the season, 28-12 over previously unbeaten Winfield. Jonny Pearson returned to rush for 155 yards and a touchdown for the Rockets. Rose Hill quarterback T.J. Slade threw for 153 yards and three scores – all going to 6-5 wide out Bret Waddell.
Clay Center remained unbeaten with a 28-0 shutout of North Central Kansas League foe Marysville. The Wildcats used another big night from senior Caleb Carson to defeat the Bulldogs. Carson rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown, passed for 56 yards, caught a 52-yard touchdown pass, and returned an interception 32 yards for another score. Carson intercepted two passes in the game.
Class 3A
Trenton Shuler rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns as Mission Valley handled Chase County 43-8. The Vikings forced four Bulldog turnovers in the game, including three interceptions. Nine different Mission Valley backs combined for 377 yards rushing in the win.
Halstead improved to 3-1 with an impressive 48-16 win over Sterling. The Dragons were led by Cory Armendariz who rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Jonah McKee also broke the 200-yard barrier with 208 yards and three scores of his own.
Trevor Miley rushed for 268 yards and three touchdowns as Ellsworth outscored Thomas More Prep, 50-35. The Bearcats erupted for 36 points in the second quarter to build an insurmountable lead. TMP quarterback Shane Zimmerman threw for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a losing effort.
Atchison County remained unbeaten by holding off Valley Falls 26-22. Ramsey Hundley had a career night for the Tigers. The senior rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, but also played a part in four turnovers for the Tiger defense. Hundley registered ten tackles, intercepted three Valley Falls passes, and recovered a fumble. Valley Falls rallied for 14 fourth-quarter points but could not overtake Atchison County.
Trae Regier scored a pair of touchdowns as Haven shocked previously unbeaten Smoky Valley, 21-13. Regier returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and added a short touchdown run in the second half that gave the Wildcats a two-score advantage.
Class 2-1A
Olpe earned its second one-point victory of the season with a 13-12 win over McLouth. The Eagles’ Mitchell Argabright broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run mid-way through the fourth quarter and Issac Hall’s PAT gave Olpe a 13-12 lead.
Ellis handed Larned its first loss of the season with a 36-0 shutout. The Railroaders used a strong defensive effort in holding Larned to only 46 yards rushing on 22 carries. Blake Hudson and Gage Younger led Ellis with 142 and 133 yards rushing, respectively.
Jackson Heights broke open an 8-7 game with 16 points in the fourth quarter to beat Maur Hill, 24-7. It was the third consecutive win for the Cobras after being shutout 16-0 by Horton in Week 1. Jackson Heights has not posted at least four wins in a season since 2006.
Josh Miller rushed for 282 yards and five touchdowns as Inman slipped by Marion, 39-28. Miller did his damage on 31 carries as the Teutons outscored Marion 20-14 in the fourth quarter to widen a 19-14 lead. Inman improved to 3-1 in the Heart of America League with the victory.
Doniphan West edged Horton 12-6 in a defensive battle in the Delaware Valley League. Jordan Sellers scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as the Mustangs took a 12-0 lead into halftime. Sophomore quarterback Tristan Speer threw a short touchdown pass to Justin Simmons to open the scoring for Doniphan West.
Class 8M-I
St. Paul’s Anthony Diskin rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns as the Indians held off Kyle Hammond and Colony-Crest 50-40. Diskin scored twice in a decisive fourth quarter where St. Paul outscored Crest 20-12 to pull out the win. Crest’s Hammond rushed for 146 yards and three scores, and passed for 120 yards and a pair of scores. Hammond increased his season rushing totals to 873 yards and 15 touchdowns, surpassing 4,500 career rushing yards. He now has 4,628 yards rushing and 79 touchdowns in his career.
Satanta outscored Hill City 14-8 in the second half to escape the Ringnecks 28-26. The Indians are enjoying their move to 8-man as they set at 2-2 after four games. The last time Satanta won two game in a season was 2008.
Udall used a strong defensive effort to knock off Oxford 47-21 in a battle of unbeatens in District 1. The Eagles led 26-14 at halftime thanks to Michael Propst catching, throwing, and rushing for a touchdown. In the second half, all three Udall touchdowns came by virtue of sophomore defensive end Cody Waggoner who recovered three Oxford fumbles in the end zone for touchdowns.
Pretty Prairie scored 40 points in the first quarter in routing Norwich 60-26. Bulldog quarterback Alex Mains threw three touchdowns in that opening quarter, and added an 18-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Pretty Prairie gets a tough test to open district play when they talk on unbeaten Little River.
Caleb Gelino rushed 38 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns as Clifton-Clyde upset Mankato-Rock Hills 42-22. The Eagles bounced back from a loss to Pike Valley in Week 3 in which they were not at full strength. Gelino also threw for 120 yards and two scores in the win over Rock Hills.
Class 8M-II
Chetopa’s Josh Devorak recovered teammate Derrick Cassell’s fumble in the end zone on the final play of the game lifting the Green Hornets to a wild 58-56 win over Uniontown. After Uniontown took the lead on a touchdown pass from Dakota Wiley to John Reed, Chetopa took over on their own 28 yard line trailing 56-52 with just over a minute to go. Cassell caught a screen pass and eventually fumbled at the goal line and Devorak recovered for the game-winning score. Chetopa outscored Uniontown 20-6 in the fourth quarter to win. Green Hornet sophomore quarterback Phillip Moses completed 36 of 54 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns. Austen Sanders caught 18 passes for 208 yards and two scores, while freshman Trenton Scott caught 11 balls for 108 yards. Cassell rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns for Chetopa. Uniontown was led by Garrett Murrow’s 186 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Western Plains used a 24-0 first half to separate themselves from Palco in a 52-20 win. Eddie Beckett threw for a pair of touchdowns in the win for Western Plains. Alex Benoit had seven receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns for Palco. The Roosters were held to just 21 rushing yards on 17 carries by the Western Plains defense.
Stockton built a 22-10 halftime lead and eventually held off Natoma 38-22. Senior quarterback Koby Beougher threw touchdown passes to three different receivers in the win for the Tigers. Stockton improved to 2-2 on the season and has already surpassed their win total from the 2011 season.
In Week 2, the Rolla Pirates snapped a 15-game losing streak with a 20-14 win over Deerfield. Fast forward to Week 4, and the Pirates are 3-1 having knocked off last season’s 8-Man, Division-I runner-up in South Gray 28-26 on Friday night. Rolla scored two touchdowns with less than four minutes in the game to overtake the Rebels. Kyler Telford scored all four Pirate touchdowns – which alone totaled 203 yards.
Sam Ottley threw two touchdown passes as Victoria knocked off Central Prairie League rival Central Plains 40-22. Ottley connected on touchdown strikes to Noah Dreiling and Eric McAlonan. McAlonan also rushed for a pair of score in the game. The Oilers were led by Chris Woolf who rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
