Defending 6A champion Olathe South lost for the first time in nine games as Shawnee Mission East used a second-quarter field goal to beat the Falcons 3-0. The Lancers remained unbeaten with the win, and check in at No. 3 in this week’s 6A poll. Olathe South drops to No. 4, one spot ahead of Lawrence Free State, who the Falcons beat 38-35 in Week 4. Top ranked Hutchinson blasted Newton 48-29, while Derby got a six touchdown performance from emergency quarterback Kellan Sims to beat Salina Central, 47-13.
In Class 5A, two of the top three teams in our poll survived major tests in Week 4. Second-ranked Emporia knocked away a late two-point conversion attempt to escape Topeka Seaman 21-19. It was the first loss of the season for the Seaman Vikings, but they creep into our poll at No. 5 this week. The previous fifth-ranked team Bishop Miege fell 28-12 to Blue Valley. Elsewhere, No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas stopped a Blue Valley West fake field goal in the third overtime as the Saints edged the Jaguars 38-35. Salina South remains at No. 4 after handling Haysville Campus. The Cougars get a major test this week when they travel to 6A top-ranked Hutchinson.
Holton remains atop the Class 4A poll after blasting previously unbeaten Hiawatha 61-14. Second-ranked Mulvane showed no let down after their thrilling win over Buhler a week ago as the Wildcats handled El Dorado 42-7. Buhler, however, dropped a second straight game – losing 44-28 to McPherson. As a result, McPherson replaces Buhler as our third-ranked team in Class 4A. Eudora remains No. 4 after beating Frontier League rival Paola, and Wichita Collegiate is fifth after they rolled past Wellington.
The Class 3A top five remained the same. Silver Lake posted an impressive 42-6 win over previously unbeaten Rock Creek. Scott City scored on its first four possessions in beating Ulysses, and Conway Springs used a four-touchdown night from Tanner Wood to hold off Cheney, 27-14. Garden Plain and Beloit put up big numbers in beating quality opponents. The Owls blasted Wichita Trinity 57-21, while Beloit built a 54-7 halftime lead over previously unbeaten Sacred Heart before winning 70-20.
Top-ranked La Crosse made a statement in Class 2-1A by going on the road and beating a good Plainville team 42-22 behind a huge night from Levi Morss. Second-ranked Stanton County and No. 3 Meade each posted shutouts ahead of their Week 5 district showdown. Lyndon and Centralia each posted their third consecutive shutouts in beating Council Grove and Onaga, respectively.
In 8-Man, Division-I, Ness City remains on top of the poll after picking up a decisive 58-12 road win at Hodgeman County. Madison, South Haven, and Marmaton Valley each had little trouble in Week 4 and remain in the two, three, and four spots. Solomon enters the poll at No. 5 after the Gorillas shutout Sylvan-Lucas Unified, 46-0. Solomon has outscored its first four opponents 217-30, and replace Mankato-Rock Hills at No. 5 after the Grizzlies fell to Clifton-Clyde.
There are slight changes this week to the bottom of our Division-II poll as Colony-Crest fell on the road at St. Paul 50-40. The Lancers fell out of our poll but may still have a major impact this week as they take on No. 3 Waverly. Otis-Bison moves up one spot to No. 4 after beating Pratt-Skyline, and defending champion Thunder Ridge is back in the top five after beating Beloit St. John’s-Tipton 46-12.
