Class 6A
Greyson Tempel rushed for 276 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries as Garden City buried Great Bend, 45-28. Tempel passed for two more scores as part of his 104 yards through the air. The Buffs defense held Great Bend back Josh Lopez to just 24 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
Gabe Guild rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as Shawnee Mission South ran past Shawnee Mission North, 55-28. Raider quarterback Jon Prueter completed all five of his passes for 107 yards and three scores. Guild has now rushed for 594 yards and four touchdowns on 82 carries in the Raiders’ first three games.
Lawrence edged Olathe East 28-20 as Brad Strauss picked off John Blazevic with under two minutes remaining in the game. Strauss was the star on offense for the Chesty Lions as the senior completed 15 of 27 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 87 yards and a score. Hayden Frazier led the Hawks with 157 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Wichita Northwest routed previously unbeaten Wichita East 44-13 on Friday night. The Grizzlies produced three 100-yard rushers in the game including quarterback Chris Hughes who ran for a game-high 152 yards. Hughes scored touchdowns on two of his nine carries. Deron Thompson and Brendan Johnson added 129 and 102 yards rushing, respectively.
Junior quarterback Dimonic McKinzy rushed for 102 yards and threw for 214 yards in KC Wyandotte’s 44-20 win over KC Sumner. But it was sophomore running back Antonio Moore who stole the show. Moore totaled 344 total yards and four touchdowns on the night. He rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff and a punt for a score.
Class 5A
Terez Patrick rushed for 120 yards as rejuvenated Wichita West beat Wichita Southeast 24-6 to improve to 2-1 on the young season. Pioneer quarterback D.J. Jones completed five pass for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Jones also added a second-half touchdown run.
Michael Moten rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown as Shawnee Heights beat Junction City 17-7. The T-Birds held Junction City to under 200 yards of total offense in improving to 2-1. Heights’ lone loss thus far came 27-21 to No. 2 Emporia in Week 1.
Andover got a solid night from Chase Ogden as the Trojans dispatched of Goddard Eisenhower, 38-8. Ogden rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns as Mike Lee’s Trojans improved to 2-1.
Coleman Kingsley rushed for two touchdowns as Newton picked up its first victory the season 16-6 over Haysville Campus. John Becker threw for 180 yards on the night to lead the Railers, while Kingsley threw for 74 more yards. Gabe Chavez caught five balls for 119 yards and J.T. Harlamon added seven catches for 102 yards.
Blue Valley Southwest scored 17 points in the third quarter to knock off Gardner-Edgerton, 31-24. Quarterback Aaron Ramsey rushed for three touchdowns for the Timberwolves in the win. Southwest racked up 256 yards rushing against the Trailblazers. Gardner-Edgerton’s Traevohn Wrench finally broke loose with 224 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the losing effort.
Class 4A
Augusta snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 14-6 road win at Wellington. Sophomore Trae Goken led the Orioles with 93 yards rushing and scored both Augusta touchdowns. It was only Augusta’s 10th win since advancing to the state quarterfinals in 2005 when the Orioles finished, 10-2.
Chanute improved to 2-1 with a 61-0 blanking of Parsons. Josh Smeed scored on a first-quarter touchdown run and blocked a punt for a touchdown. Blue Comet quarterback Brock Gilmore threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score. Blake Kisner also added a pair of touchdown runs for Chanute, which only loss came Week 1 at Mulvane.
Brad Chilcoat passed for 204 yards and four touchdowns as Hiawatha pummeled Royal Valley 44-6. Chilcoat hooked up with his brother Denzel five times for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Denzel also rushed four times for 83 yards and a score. Chilcoat also threw a touchdown pass to Peyton Newell, one of the state’s top prospects in the class of 2014.
McPherson sent defending 4A champion Rose Hill to its third consecutive loss with a 33-15 win. Austin O’Bannon carried 34 times for 138 yards and a pair of scores. Sophomore quarterback Kyler Kinnamon passed for 137 yards and a touchdown and added 68 yards and a touchdown rushing. The Bullpups host No. 3 Buhler in Week 4, while Rose Hill looks for its first win against unbeaten Winfield.
Larned improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1999 with a 31-21 win over Thomas More Prep. Indian running back Brady Keith rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Jamil Shoemaker caught six passes for 90 yards for Larned. Quarterback Easton Palmer threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third for the Indians.
Class 3A
Cimarron improved to 3-0 with a 48-8 rout of Sublette. The Bluejays’ Ty Clark rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns in the win, and also caught a touchdown pass. Cimarron will get a big test in Week 4 as they host 2-1A’s third-ranked Meade Buffaloes.
Nick Sivert threw threw for 114 yards and a touchdown as Galena outlasted Frontenac 32-6 in a game that feature little offense given the wet conditions. Frontenac took an early 6-0 lead on a Devon Keith 16-yard run before Sivert connected with Tyler VanCleave to put the Bulldogs up for good. Sivert also returned a Raider fumble for a touchdown. Galena’s Trenton Little led all rushers with 50 yards as rain impacted play for a third straight week in southeast Kansas.
Riverside remained unbeaten with a 24-8 win over Maur Hill. The Cyclones got a game high 142 yards rushing from Drew Hoffman in beating the Junior Ravens. Riverside quarterback Andrae McGaughy added 83 yards rushing and a touchdown, and his only completion went for a 20-yard score to Kyle Studer. Dakota Pummell added 85 yards and a score for the Cyclones. Maur Hill quarterback Brock Hanf totaled 139 yards of total offense and a rushing touchdown.
On Thursday night, St. Mary’s Colgan overcame three turnovers in the red zone to knock off Anderson County, 23-12. Senior running back Connor Dayton rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries for the Panthers. Jack Rickabaugh threw for207 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs.
Nemaha Valley scored 14 points in 20 seconds to shock Jefferson West 14-7. Quarterback Caleb Meyer hit Creighton Brinker on a 74-yard touchdown pass to pull the Raiders within 7-6. After recovering the onside kick, Nemaha Valley struck again as Meyer hit Alex Rottinghaus on a 54-yard touchdown with 1:29 left to give the Raiders the lead. Jefferson West had taken the game’s first lead on a touchdown pass from Ian Mullins to Drew Slimmer with 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Class 2-1A
Northeast-Arma won its second game of the week in blasting Eureka 35-6 in a game that feature a running clock. Viking junior quarterback J.T. Richardson rushed for more than 300 yards in the win. On Monday night, the Vikings ended a 19-game losing streak with a 34-14 win over Fredonia. Richardson rushed for four touchdowns in Monday’s victory. Northeast (2-1) has posted two wins in a season for the first time since 2004 when the Vikings finished 3-6.
Leavenworth-Immaculata improved to 2-1 as the Raiders got a late touchdown to overtake Jayhawk-Linn, 14-7. Quarterback Drew Sachen tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass off of play-action to ConnnorSchmidling late in the fourth quarter for the deciding score. Sachen rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.
Jackson Heights broke the 50-point mark for the second consecutive week as the Cobras outscored Valley Falls 50-28. Brant Morris rushed for 224 yards on only ten carries on the night for Jackson Heights. The Cobras have won two games in a season for the first time since 2009.
Ell-Saline blasted Moundridge 50-6 to improve to 3-0 on the season. Toby Omli rushed for three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from Garrett Walker in the win. Walker also hit Kaleb Whitehair on a pair of touchdown passes as the Cardinals scored 50 points for the second time this season.
Jantz Buddle rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns as Leoti-Wichita County held on for a 34-28 win over Syracuse. The Indians led 22-8 at halftime before Syracuse scored 20 points in the third quarter to tie the game at 28. Buddle gave the Indians the winning score with just over four minutes remaining on his fourth touchdown run of the night.
Class 8M-I
Lebo rallied from a 26-20 halftime deficit to pick up a hard-earned district win over Centre-Lost Springs, 36-26. Lebo quarterback Jacob Gould threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns in the game – two to Tyson Robke who caught nine passes for 195 yards. Robke also returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown to keep the Wolves within striking distance at halftime, and he intercepted four Cougar passes on the night.
Daniel Durant rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries as Solomon routed Wakefield, 54-8. Colton Shirack threw for 114 yards and four touchdowns and added 94 yards and a score on the ground. Josh Burdine caught four passes for 84 yards and two scores for Solomon. The Gorillas improved to 3-0 and have outscored their opponents by an average score of 57-10. Wakefield was led by Brandon Taylor’s 140 yards on the ground.
Hodgeman County outscored WaKeeney-Trego 18-0 in the middle two quarters to get a key road win, 34-16. The Longhorns led only 12-8 at halftime and 18-8 after three quarters before scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Hodgeman County led Golden Eagle running back Cameron Staples to 61 yards on 12 carries – 176 yards below his average in the first two weeks.
Macksville held on to get a key district win over Kiowa County, 28-24. Tanner Tranberger led the Mustangs with 184 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Trevor Powell led Kiowa County with 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Macksville hosts St. John (2-1) in Week 4, while Kiowa County travels to Kinsley (1-2).
South Gray’s Colton Dirks rushed 11 times for 282 yards and five touchdowns as the Rebels blasted Bucklin 76-28. Henry Friesen added three touchdowns on the ground as South Gray rushed for more than 380 yards. The Rebels scored 58 points in the first half, including 38 in the first quarter in extending Bucklin’s losing streak to 34 games.
Class 8M-II
Connor Eilert rushed for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Beloit St. John’s-Tipton improved to 3-0 with a 32-12 win over Stockton. Eriq Perez added 71 yards rushing and 86 yards receiving to go along with two scores for the Blujays.
Tescott picked up its first win of the season and took the first step towards the program’s first playoff appearance since 2008 with a 62-24 win over Burrton. Junior Kyle Comstock led the Trojans by rushing for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Tescott led 38-0 at halftime.
Callahan Brown and Lucas Adams each rushed for more than 100 yards as Frankfort slipped by Veritas Christian 32-22. Brown carried 26 times for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Wildcats, which improved to 3-0 with the win. Adams added 100 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Chetopa broke into the win column with a 48-0 blanking of Pleasanton. Derrick Cassell rushed for 276 yards on 30 carries to lead the Green Hornets. Cassell also recorded 17 tackles on defense as Chetopa shutout an opponent for the first time since a 48-0 blanking of Oxford in Week 3 of last season.
Moscow rushed for 505 yards in a 76-30 win over Deerfield. Lane Miller led the Wildcats in rushing with 261 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. Miller also returned a kickoff 75 yards for a score and intercepted a pass on defense. Alexis Manriquez added 174 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 29 carries.
