The state’s top-ranked team Hutchinson squandered a 31-13 fourth-quarter lead in losing to Rockhurst (Mo.) 35-31. Despite the loss, Hutchinson remains in our top spot in Class 6A after rushing for 330 yards against the Hawklets. Derby and Olathe South remain Nos. 2 and 3 in the 6A poll, while Wichita Heights is back in the rankings at No. 4 after a 39-24 win at Dodge City. Lawrence Free State, which fell 38-35 to Olathe South, remains in the poll at No. 5.
While the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles have established themselves as the early favorite in Class 5A, the rest of the teams in the classification are still working out who the contenders are. Losses by second-ranked Bishop Miege and third-ranked Blue Valley shook up the top five for Week 4.
Emporia checks in at No. 2 after the Spartans blasted Topeka Highland Park this week. They face a big challenge in Week 4 as they host unbeaten Topeka Seaman; a team just outside our top five. St. Thomas Aquinas picked up an impressive road win over Salina Central behind big games from running back Nick Williams and quarterback Danten Cosentino. Likewise, Salina South shut down Blue Valley by holding the Tigers to only 115 total yards in a 28-7 win. The Cougars are ranked fourth in this week’s poll. Miege falls to No. 5 after a 21-14 overtime loss to Blue Valley Northwest.
In Class 4A, the fans’ choice for Kpreps Game of the Week lived up to its billing as Mulvane edged Buhler 38-34. The Wildcats (No. 2) and Crusaders (No. 3) switch places in this week’s 4A poll, just behind top-ranked Holton. Eudora remains at No. 4 this week, while Wichita Collegiate is fifth after a blowout win over Towanda Circle.
The Class 3A poll remains unchanged as only Scott City was tested in a 21-7 win over Holcomb. Beloit keeps rolling in the fifth spot after blasting Russell, 84-0.
There was also no movement in the Class 2-1A poll this week as three of the top five posted shutouts. Top-ranked La Crosse will get a big test this week when they travel to Plainville. The Cardinals sit just outside our Class 2-1A top five.
Ness City continues to roll atop the 8-Man Division-I poll with a 52-8 win over Victoria. The remainder of the Division I poll remained unchanged as all five teams put up at least 50 points in blowout wins.
In 8-Man, Division-II, Otis-Bison is down two spots to No. 5 after falling to a good Hoxie team, 56-22. The Cougars trailed 32-22 entering the fourth quarter, but Hoxie rattled off 24 unanswered in the final period to pull away. Baileyville B&B posted another impressive win beating Division-I power Pretty Prairie, 52-8. Waverly is up to No. 3 in the Division II poll, while Colony-Crest got another huge performance from Kyle Hammond to move up to No. 4.
