Class 6A
The Topeka High Trojans used 488 yards of total offense to beat Topeka Hayden 30-15. The victory over Hayden was Topeka High’s first since Walt Alexander became the Trojans’ head coach seven years ago. Trojans quarterback Raymond Solis completed 15 of 23 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 99 yards and one score.
Lawrence scored 36 first-half points on their way to a 42-13 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest. Tyrone Jenkins rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lions. Kansas Pregame cover-boy Brad Strauss threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 89 yards and a score, and intercepted a pass on defense.
Shawnee Mission East quarterback Jordan Darling passed for 266 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lancers past Olathe North 30-7 on Thursday. Darling, who has verbally committed to Kansas, is considered the No. 6 recruit in the state by Rivals.com. The win was the first for SM East (2-0) over the Eagles in 27 years. Meanwhile, Olathe North – a longtime power – drops to 0-2 on the season and has lost six straight games.
Wichita Southeast picked up its first win of the season with a 24-0 shutout of Kapaun Mt. Carmel. The Golden Buffaloes scored on a Kapuan punt that was snapped through the endzone, a blocked punt, and a punt return for a touchdown by Braden Burleson. William Young provided the only offensive points with a short touchdown run as part of his 72-yard night.
KC Wyandotte drilled KC Harmon 56-6 on Friday behind the play of junior quarterback Dimonic McKinzy and sophomore running back Antonio Moore. McKinzy (6-0, 200) is a talented athlete who already holds offers from Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Moore (6-0, 180) had a touchdown rushing and two receiving against the Hawks.
Class 5A
Independence took an early 6-0 lead when Courtlan Hayes returned the opening kick 96 yards for a touchdown. However, Pittsburg dominated in scoring the next 50 points in a 50-13 win against the Bulldogs. Sophomore running back and linebacker Alex Barnes continues to impress, scoring four touchdowns against Independence as the Purple Dragons improved to 2-0.
Topeka Seaman quarterback Butch Rea passed for more than 100 yards and rushed for more than 70 as his Vikings defeated Junction City 35-0. Seaman used three interceptions from defensive backs Tyler Bushnell (2) and Tyler Campbell and big receptions from sophomore Joe Reagan (3 catches, 83 yards) to key the victory. The game was 7-0 at halftime, but Junction City struggled when it was forced to pass in the second half.
Mill Valley rebounded from a blowout loss at Manhattan in Week 1 with a 56-7 win over KC Turner. Jaguar quarterback Skyler Windmiller threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns in the win. L.J. Hatch caught six passes for 132 yards and a touchdown.
Cody Busby rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown as Salina South drilled Maize 43-14. Justin Stonebreaker added 176 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and threw for more than 100 yards and two scores. Salina South will face a good test in Week 3 when the Cougars travel to Blue Valley.
Bryce Beck’s fourth-quarter touchdown proved to be the difference in Great Bend’s 28-20 win over Ulysses. The score was Beck’s second rushing touchdown of the night, and he also added a TD pass to Matt Marshall in the opening quarter. Ulysses was led by Ian Rudzik’s 137 yards on the ground.
Class 4A
St. James Academy won consecutive games to begin the season for the second consecutive season as the Thunder blanked Bishop Ward, 45-0. Quarterback Jansen Keyes rushed for 144 yards and the Thunder gashed the Cyclones for more than 300 yards on the ground. St. James will try to move to 3-0 for the second straight year when they travel to Baldwin in Week 3.
Rose Hill, the defending 4A state champions, lost its second consecutive game by five points as Andale topped the Rockets 28-23. Andale’s Hunter Knoblauch rushed for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns. Rose Hill’s T.J. Slade passed for nearly 200 yards and a score. Rose Hill lost 26-21 to Buhler in Week 1.
Chapman held Southeast of Saline to under 100 yards of total offense as the Irish snapped a 25-game losing streak with a 14-2 win. Jerrad Gillen rushed for two touchdowns for Chapman, but it was the Irish defense that was the story in forcing four Trojan turnovers.
Ethan Loder threw a short touchdown pass to Curtis Carlson and Jarod DeMott booted a 36-yard field goal as Smoky Valley shutout Kingman 12-0. The Vikings improved to 2-0 after a 27-26 win over Sterling in Week 1. Kingman was shutout after putting up 52 points against Sunrise Christian a week ago.
KC Piper received a pair of rushing touchdowns from senior Matt McDonald as the Pirates shocked Basehor-Linwood 35-22. Pirate quarterback Tanner Eikenbary ensured Piper kept the lead by tossing two second-half touchdowns in the win. The loss snapped a 24-game regular season winning streak for Basehor-Linwood.
Class 3A
Holcomb got a big night from Tyler LaSalle in blowing out Hugoton, 49-26. LaSalle rushed for 128 yards and a score, and added more than 100 yards passing the two touchdowns to Jeremy Cox. Hugoton scored 20 points in the fourth quarter after trailing 41-6.
Sojuan Turentine rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries as St. Marys ran past Valley Heights, 43-12. The Bears rebounded from a season-opening loss to Centralia by outscoring the Mustangs 27-0 in the final three quarters.
Sabetha spotted Perry-Lecompton 14 first-quarter points before rallying to beat the Kaws, 20-14. Taylor Bauman caught a pair of touchdown passes and McKenzie McAfee added a touchdown run for the Bluejays. Riley Davis and Trevor Dark each had touchdown catches for Perry-Lecompton.
Hillsboro quarterback Tyler Proffitt completed 14 of 22 attempts for 261 yards and three scores as the Trojans beat Sterling, 28-6. Proffitt threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns in the season-opening win against Lyons.
Rossville quarterback Dalton Catron amassed 183 yards of total offense as the Bulldogs edged Abilene, 14-7. Rossville’s defense intercepted Cowboy quarterback Andy Wilson four times in the game.
Class 2-1A
Northern Heights rallied from an improbably 42-12 fourth-quarter deficit to shock Council Grove, 44-42. The Braves built their 30-point fourth quarter lead by virtue of four touchdown passes from junior quarterback Tanner Langvardt – two each to Layton Leydig and Tanner Zimmerman.
The Wildcats began their comeback in the final period as Luke Larson intercepted Council Grove’s back-up quarterback Trey Langvardt and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. After the Braves offense stalled, Michael Wecker scored on a 11-yard run with six minutes remaining to pull Northern Heights within 42-28. Later a Brave personal foul helped key a Northern Heights drive that resulted in a 19-yard touchdown pass to Michael Karr with just under two minutes remaining. Trailing 42-36, the Wildcats converted the onside kick, converted a fourth-and-fourteen, received a roughing the passer penalty, and tied the game with a 30-yard touchdown bomb from Larson to Colton Schumann with seconds left. The two-point conversion to Michael Wecker was good, and the Wildcats had completed a 30-point fourth quarter comeback to win 44-42.
Olpe and Wellsville traded touchdowns in the final two-and-a-half minutes on Friday night, but it was Issac Hall’s PAT that lifted Olpe to a 15-14 win. Sophomore quarterback Bo Krueger, playing in place of injured starter Brandon Baumgardner, led Olpe on a dramatic game-winning touchdown drive capped off by his one-yard sneak with 11 seconds remaining. Wellsville had broken an 8-8 tie with just over two minutes remaining as Shane Hillman scored on a 28-yard touchdown run.
Ethan Spore rushed for 171 yards and four touchdowns as Oswego blasted Eureka 38-6. The Indians rushed for nearly 450 yards in the game and held the Tornados to just 65 yards of total offense.
On Monday night, Northeast-Arma knocked off Fredonia 34-14 to snap a 19-game losing streak. J.T. Richardson rushed for four touchdowns as the Vikings won for the first time since the 2009 season finale when they beat Pleasanton 14-6.
Alex Gomez and A.J. McKinley each threw for more than 100 yards and a touchdown as Elkhart won at Southwestern Heights, 17-6.
Class 8M-I
Chet Cordell rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns, but none bigger than his fourth-quarter score that rallied Little River past Peabody-Burns, 34-32. Little River built a 20-0 lead in the first quarter before the Warriors came storming back and eventually led 32-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Ethan Wright led the Redskins with 161 yards rushing on 23 carries.
WaKeeney-Trego blasted Stockton with a 30-point first quarter and a huge night from Cameron Staples in a 56-8 win for the Golden Eagles. Staples rushed 23 times for 303 yards and four touchdowns and teammate Devon Ghumm added 108 yards and four more scores. Staples has now rushed for 474 yards and seven touchdown in the Eagles first two games.
Michael Propst threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns as Udall beat Caldwell 40-14. Propst connected on scoring strikes to Heath Satterlee and Deshon Stiner, twice. Satterlee also tossed a touchdown pass to Stiner who had four catches for 162 yards.
Minneola senior quarterback Matt McClaren ran wild on Friday night in the Wildcats’ 66-22 win over Fowler. McClaren rushed 31 times for 488 yards and nine touchdowns – all in the first three quarters. McClaren also converted three two-point conversions as part of his 60-point night. The Wildcats rushed for 547 yards in the game.
Cody Savage is beginning to follow in his older brother’s footsteps: albeit at a different school. Savage threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns as his Canton-Galva Eagles outscored Goessel 76-56. Savage, who’s brother Bo set several state passing records during his last four years at Central Burden, also added 128 yards on the ground for his dad’s new team. Trey Schmidt threw seven touchdown passes for Goessel.
Class 8M-II
Sophomore quarterback Zeke Cox completed 18 of 30 passes for 337 yards and six touchdowns as Ingalls outscored Spearville, 62-46. Cox also rushed for a touchdown, and returned a fumble and interception for touchdowns. LaMontae Heady hauled in six receptions for 196 yards and five touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Defending champion Thunder Ridge got back in the win column with a 58-12 pasting of Pike Valley. Longhorn back Trevor Lowe carried nine times for 135 yards and two scores, and also hauled in a 29-yard touchdown reception. Lowe posted scoring runs of 17 and 75 yards as the Longhorns scored the game’s first 42 points.
Marshall Carey rushed for 168 yards and three scores as Blue Valley Randolph improved to 2-0 with a 56-36 win over Linn. Ram quarterback Levi Peter contributed through the air with 142 yards and three touchdowns. Blue Valley Randolph has a non-league game against Marmaton Valley in Week 3.
Beloit St. John’s-Tipton scored 34 first-quarter points in blasting Southern Cloud, 52-6. Connor Eilert rushed for a pair of touchdowns to go with his 60 yards on the ground. Luke Eilert hauled in 83 receiving yards and three scores for the Blujays. Jason McDaniel rushed for 50 yards and a score for Southern Cloud.
Northern Valley produced three 100-yard rushers in a 44-14 win over Triplains-Brewster. Jordan Baird led the way for the Huskies with 190 yards and three scores on 24 carries. Phillip Bryant added 146 yards and a touchdown, while Hunter Chandler rushed for 128 yards and two scores.
