In the Kpreps Game of the Week, Bishop Miege running back Dante Hutton rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns as 5A’s second-ranked Stags defeated 6A’s fourth-ranked Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers 37-20.
Miege scored 20 points in the game’s opening quarter and held that 20-0 lead at halftime. The Trailblazers would pull as close as 23-14 after the end of the third quarter before Miege would add two scores.
Gardner-Edgerton quarterback Jared Hobby passed for 215 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions in the loss. Trailblazers star running back Traevohn Wrench was kept in check for the second consecutive week as the Stags kept him to 13 yards on six carries.
Bishop Miege quarterback Montell Cozart passed for 124 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Miege’s MiKinley Johnson caught four passes for 93 yards and Cozart’s touchdown. Johnson also intercepted Hobby three times.
The win was the second consecutive for the Stags over the Trailblazers. Miege won at Gardner-Edgerton 34-0 last fall.

Conway Springs survived an early season road test by beating a solid Caney Valley team 33-8. After Caney jumped out to an 8-0 lead, Conway Springs answered with touchdown runs by Tanner Wood and Dakota Finstad to lead 14-8 at halftime.
The third quarter would be a nightmare for Caney Valley. Wood began the scoring by returning a Bullpup interception for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Finstad tackled the Caney returner at the 4-yard line. Shortly after, Wood recovered a Caney fumble for a touchdown to give the Cardinals a 27-8 lead.
Finstad would add his second rushing touchdown of the game following another Caney Valley fumble to complete 33 unanswered points by the Cardinals.

Fort Scott escaped Columbus with a wild, 35-32 double-overtime win over their former SEK League rival. Columbus thwarted a late Tiger scoring opportunity by blocking a field goal and sending the game into overtime tied at 21.
Fort Scott would score first in the first overtime, and after the Titans roughed the kicker on the PAT the Tigers successfully added the two-point conversion to lead 29-21.
Columbus answered with a touchdown and conversion to send the game into a second overtime tied at 29.
The Titans, however, would have to settle for a field goal and a 32-29 lead.
Tiger quarterback Jonathan Stark would then hit Straton Hunziker on a touchdown pass to give Fort Scott the 35-32 victory.

The Lincoln County rivalry between the Lincoln Leopards and Sylvan-Lucas Unified Mustangs provided one of the most exciting 8-Man contests of the night.
Lincoln jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter lead but then caught the turnover bug – spotting the Mustangs 24 points before rallying to recover a Sylvan-Lucas fumble on fourth-and-goal at the Leopard 2-yard line with 3:11 remaining in the game.
The Leopards then scored with 1:41 on the clock as quarterback Dayton Walter hit Zach Streit on a 38-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 24.
The Lincoln defense would force Sylvan to turn the ball over on downs, and the Walter connected with tight end Jared Obermueller on a 22-yard touchdown pass with :02 seconds remaining to give the Leopards the dramatic win.

Class 4A’s fifth-ranked Buhler Crusaders pulled off another impressive victory, clipping Wichita Collegiate 28-21. The win was especially impressive since the Crusaders trailed 21-7 at halftime.
It was a tale of two halves for Buhler and Collegiate. Spartans wide receiver Marcus Phox caught four passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, but was limited to one catch for 14 yards in the second. Buhler running back Riley Allen was bottled up much of the first half, but finished the game with nearly 200 yards rushing.
The Crusaders, now 2-0, were coming off a 26-21 win against Rose Hill.

Emporia, ranked fourth in the Kpreps Class 5A rankings, shutout 6A’s fifth-ranked Manhattan Indians 21-0.
Emporia took advantage of a Manhattan turnover to take a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Spartans expanded that lead to 14-0 at halftime, and then put the game away as J.L. Savage hauled in a long touchdown pass from quarterback Braxton Marstall.
The loss ended Manhattan’s 28-game regular season winning streak dating back to a 30-6 loss at Junction City in the week of the 2008 season.

The Topeka Seaman Vikings made a statement Friday night by defeating Class 6A’s Junction City Blue Jays 35-0.
Seaman, which finished only 2-7 last season, improved to 2-0 after beating perennial 4A contender Topeka Hayden 23-6 last week.
Three crucial interceptions helped the Vikings earn the victory against Junction City.
The Blue Jays faced a second-and-goal from the 3-yard-line on their opening possession, but Seaman senior defensive back Tyler Campbell intercepted the pass near the goal line and returned it 65 yards. That was Junction City’s only possession inside Seaman’s red zone.
Seaman senior defensive back Tyler Bushnell picked off two more Cody Devin passes in the second half. The Vikings converted both of those turnovers into touchdowns.
Quarterback Butch Rea led the Vikings offense, passing for about 100 yards and rushing for more than 70. Sophomore running back Joe Reagan also played a key role, catching three passes for 83 yards.
Junction City’s running game was limited to 50 yards.

Rossville intercepted Abilene quarterback Andy Wilson four times as they beat the Cowboys 14-7.
Rossville led 14-0 at halftime, but Abilene made a push in the second half as Wilson scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Wilson led the Cowboys down the field again in the fourth quarter, but were stopped in Rossville territory.
Despite the picks, Wilson finished the game with about 250yards of total offense. Bulldogs quarterback Dalton Catron passed for 95 yards, while rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Andrew Ballock scored his third rushing touchdown of the night with three minutes remaining in the game to lift Eudora to a 21-20 win over Frontier League rival Louisburg. It was the Cardinals second consecutive win over the Wildcats.

Several teams have ended long losing streaks in the first two weeks of the season.
Last week the Larned Indians ended a 24-game losing skid by defeating Ellsworth. The Indians are now 2-0 after a 29-14 win over Ellinwood in Week 2.
On Thursday night, Topeka West ended a 25-game losing streak with a 35-20 win over KC Washington.
Friday’s action resulted in two more winless steaks coming to an end.
Rolla won for the first time in 15 games as the Pirates edged Deerfield 20-14, and Chapman ended their 25-game losing streak with a 14-2 win over Southeast of Saline.

Finally, in what has to be one of the most improbably comebacks in Kansas high school football history, Northern Heights rallied from down 42-12 entering the fourth quarter to shock Council Grove, 44-42.
