Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as rain and sloppy field conditions resulting from the remnants of Hurricane Issac made play difficult on the eastern half of the state.
Class 6A
Leavenworth won its season-opener for the first time since 2007 with a 41-16 rout of Shawnee Mission North. Pioneer junior running back Jason Randall rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries in the game. Randall’s first carry went for a 50-yard touchdown run on Leavenworth’s first offensive play. The Pioneers led 22-16 at halftime before outscoring the Indians 19-0 in the second half.
Shawnee Mission East capitalized on Shawnee Mission South mistakes in a 23-0 rain soaked victory. South actually outgained East in the first half, but lost two fumbles and snapped a punt through the end zone for a safety. SM East quarterback Jordan Darling, a Kansas commit, completed 9 of 12 passes for 67 yards and added a short rushing touchdown. SM South senior Gabe Guild led the Raiders with 154 yards rushing on 31 carries.
Junction City overcame a 22-point first-quarter deficit, tied the game with less than two minutes remaining, and then scored a winning two-point conversion in overtime to defeat Hays, 44-43. Jovon Toles led the Blue Jays with 125 yards and two touchdowns on the ground – none bigger than his 5-yard run in overtime after the Indians had taken a 43-36 lead. Toles would add the two-point conversion run to give the Blue Jays the win. Hays was led by sophomore quarterback Alex Delton who rushed for 102 yards and four touchdowns, and threw for 78 yards and a score. David Cardinal added 81 yards on the ground for the Indians.
Chase White rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown as Maize outscored Newton, 49-25. Maize quarterback Connor Lungwitz completed 19 of 28 passes for 264 yards and a score to pace the Eagle offense. Newton was led by Coleman Kingsley who rushed for 185 yards.
Weston Shartz’s first game back on the sidelines at Wichita West resulted in a wild 32-26 double overtime win over Wichita South. Freshman Javon Reed scored from 9-yards out in the second overtime to lift the Pioneers to the dramatic win. West was led by Trez Patrick who rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Class 5A
Blake Meier threw for 195 yards and four touchdowns as Andover Central went to their air to outpace Valley Center, 25-19. Meier connected with four different receivers, but senior Kolton Holinde was the main target catching six balls for 159 yards and two touchdowns. The Valley Center defense returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns to stay close.
Trevor Hughes hit Jacob Richardson on a 64-yard touchdown pass lat in the fourth quarter to propel Goddard Eisenhower to a 22-20 win over Clearwater. It was the school’s first win in its inaugural varsity season. Hughes and Richardson teamed up for another long touchdown play in the first half for the Tigers.
KC Schlagle running back J’veyon Browning rushed 17 times for 263 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Stallions past Topeka West, 36-6. The Schlagle defense got on the board twice in the first quarter by returning a fumble and an interception back for touchdowns.
Great Bend survived a scare from nearby Hoisington as the Panthers escaped with a 14-6 win. Josh Lopez rushed for 106 yards for the Panthers including a touchdown run with four seconds left in the first half to give Great Bend a 7-0 lead. Hoisington pulled within 7-6 when Avery Urban hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from Hagen Hanzlick that was tipped by teammate Cody Stetler. Great bend would tack on a fourth quarter score for the final margin.
St. Thomas Aquinas took its first lead with just over 2:30 remaining in the game and held on to edge Blue Valley Northwest 10-6 in the rainy season opener. Saints’ quarterback Austin Scherzer hit Danten Costentino on a 12-yard touchdown pass for the winning score. Until that point, Aquinas could only muster a 26-yard Derek Rodgers field goal.
Class 4A
Marques Floyd rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries as Fort Scott rolled past Parsons. The Tigers rushed for more than 350 yards on the night and led 53-0 at halftime. Fort Scott also forced five Viking turnovers including four fumbles. Fort Scott defeated Parsons 61-12 in 2011.
Eudora scored 25 unanswered points to top KC Piper 25-7 on Friday night. Gabe Cleveland rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries to lead the Cardinals. Eudora put the game away with two fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Markis Hill.
Tanner Huntington threw for 81 yards and two touchdowns and contributed 66 yards rushing and a score as Atchison hammered Pleasant Ridge 46-6. Nine Redmen rushers combined for nearly 250 yards led by Chris Rivers 69 yards on five carries. Atchison forced three Ram turnovers including two interceptions by Wade Gassman.
Wichita Trinity sophomore Tyler Burns put on quite a show in the Knights’ 60-36 win over Chaparral. Burns rushed for 301 yards on his six rushing touchdowns alone, and added 27-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Matt Jones.
Larned snapped a 24-game losing streak with a 27-25 win over Ellsworth. The Indians held a 14-point lead late in the game until Ellsworth scored, recovered an onside kick, and then scored again with about two minutes remaining. The Bearcats, however, could not convert the two-point conversion and Larned won its first game since September 18, 2009 when they beat Thomas More Prep, 36-26.
Class 3A
Phillipsburg used big play after big play to handle Plainville 48-18 in the fan’s choice for Kpreps Game of the Week. Panther quarterback Sean Newlan completed all four of his passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns, including an 88-yard TD strike to Tad Thompson after Plainville failed to convert a fourth down deep in Phillipsburg territory. Phillipsburg also returned an interception for a touchdown in the game. Plainville ran three times as many plays as Phillipsburg as the Cardinals rushed for 360 yards. Harrison Gilliland led Plainville with 172 yards while Trevor Axelson added 96 yards and a pair of scores.
Minneapolis senior quarterback Matt Comfort rushed for a pair of touchdown as part of a 25-point first quarter as the Lions blasted Russell, 45-0. Comfort’s classmate Garret Lott also added a pair of touchdown runs as Minneapolis ended a two-game losing streak to the Broncos.
On Thursday night, Southeast-Cherokee spoiled the CNC League debut for the Columbus Titans by winning 34-22 in Columbus. Lancer quarterback Josh Thompson completed 15 of 29 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns. Southeast built an early 21-9 lead before trailing Columbus 22-21 at halftime. It was the Lancer’s first season opening win since 2008.
Anthony Camper broke a 37-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to lift Caney Valley to an 8-0 win at Girard. The Bullpups and Trojans battled in what can best be described as a mud bowl as the remnants of Hurricane Issac dumped several inches of rain in Southeast Kansas. Camper finished with 100 yards rushing for Caney Valley which will host Conway Springs in Week 2.
Riverside quarterback Andrae McGaughty connected with Dakota Pummell on an 10-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute to go to propel the Cyclones past Doniphan West, 32-27. Minutes earlier, McGaughty fumbled deep inside Mustang territory, but Doniphan West sophomore quarterback Tristan Speer returned the favor as both teams dealt with wet conditions. McGaughty rushed for 157 yards and Pummel added 101 yards and three rushing scores for Riverside. Speer threw for 140 yards and three touchdowns for Doniphan West.
Class 2-1A
Marc Walbridge began his third year under center by throwing for 130 yards and two touchdowns as McLouth defeated Nemaha Valley, 32-6. Walbridge also ran for a touchdown on the night. Drew Cerny added a pair of rushing touchdowns and caught one of Walbridge’s touchdown passes.
Sublette edged Southwestern Heights 24-16 in Hi-Plains League action. The Larks were led by Eric Miller who rushed for a pair of touchdowns and returned an interception 50 yards for another score. Avigael Gonzalez added a 63-yard touchdown run for Sublette. Southwestern Heights was led by Ben Johnsrud who carried six times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Zach Fief rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns as Bennington picked up a 46-0 shutout over Whitewater Remington. Jake Stewart added 126 yards and two touchdowns as part of his six carries for the Bulldogs. The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for Bennington.
Riley Kearney carried 30 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns, but his two-point conversion in overtime proved to be the difference in Valley Falls’ 28-26 win over Valley Heights. Valley Heights rallied to score 14 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 20, but could not convert the conversion in overtime. Heights was led by Tanner Trimble’s 155 yards on the ground.
Washington County scored 19 fourth-quarter points to overtake Onaga 31-21 on opening night. The Tigers were led on the ground by Andrew Tiemeyer who rushed for 123 yards and three scores. Onaga’s Mitchell Kufahl rushed for a score and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Eisenbarth.
Class 8M-I
Quinter defeated Golden Plains for the fifth consecutive year to open the season. The Bulldogs had three 100-yard rushers in the 54-18 win. Colton Corwin led Quinter with 125 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Mader added 122 yards and three scores, while Brett Crist rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown.
WaKeeney-Trego outscored Osborne 42-0 in the second half to turn a 36-28 halftime deficit into a 70-36 win. The Golden Eagles scored 36 points in the third quarter alone to take control. Cameron Staples led the Eagles with 171 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while Devon Ghumm added 156 yards and three scores. Quarterback John Griffith passed for 81 yards and two touchdowns and added 90 yards rushing and two scores. Osborne was led by Kenton Ubelaker who rushed for 128 yards and three scores, and had 70 receiving yards and a touchdown.
South Gray scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to help hold off Ingalls, 36-16. The Rebels were led by Carson Skidmore who rushed for two touchdowns and added a pair of touchdown passes to Jake Peters. South Gray will host Kiowa County in Week 2.
Gage Burkes rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns as Oxford picked up a season-opening win over Attica, 43-6. Daelyn Haskins added 91 yards on the ground and a pair of scores for the Wildcats. Oxford’s defense also came up big forcing a safety and returning an interception for another score.
St. Paul rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit to slip past West Elk, 26-20. The Indians outscored the Patriots 20-0 in the second half paced by a strong rushing attack. Anthony Diskin rushed for 181 yards and a touchdown, and Alex McCracken added a pair of scores for St. Paul.
Class 8M-II
In the Central Prairie League, Victoria got a key road win by knocking off Macksville, 34-20. The Knights extended a slim 20-12 halftime lead with a short touchdown run by quarterback Sam Ottley who finished with 111 yards on the ground. The game was the fifth consecutive season-opener between the Knights and Mustangs with Victoria winning for the first time since 2009.
Colony-Crest standout Kyle Hammond lived up to his billing as a Kansas Pregame Magazine cover-boy as the senior carried 14 times for 245 yards and five touchdowns in a 46-0 win over Pleasanton on Thursday night. Hammond scored on runs of 21, 54, 46, 7 and 9 yards on the night. Crest gets an early season test when the Lancers travel to take on Marmaton Valley.
Junior quarterback Taylin Bird completed hooked up with Ty Clark eleven times for 175 yards and two touchdowns as Fowler slipped past Hodgeman County, 29-26. Bird also rushed for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Goldbugs.
After playing mostly a JV schedule last season, Western Plains came back on the varsity front in a big way with a 38-0 shutout of Triplains-Brewster in Week 1. The Bobcasts and Titans were scoreless at halftime, but Western Plains broke through for 22 points in the third quarter to pull away.
Elk Valley received a pair of 100-yard rushing performances, but fell at the hands of Tyro Christian, 88-38. Nick Monjure led the Lions with 159 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, while Cody Hisle added 127 yards and a pair of scores. The two teams will meet again on September 14th.
