Twin brothers, Christian and Zach Smith, have long joked that they were going to be a package deal. The running back/linebacker duo from St. Mary’s Colgan has wanted to play college football together.

“I’ve always joked I had to go to the same school as him, because if I didn’t, he wouldn’t have any friends,” Christian said before his senior season at Colgan.

With both coming off All-State seasons for the Panthers, the brothers are indeed bound to play college ball on the same team. Both are set to attend Princeton.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for them both,” said their father, Pat Smith. “It’s really special.”

Not only will the brothers get to continue playing the game they love, they also will receive a first-class education at one of the premier institutions in the nation.

Together, the twins helped lead Colgan deep into the playoffs in recent seasons. This past fall, the Panthers were on an undefeated run before falling to Centralia – the eventual state champion – in the Class 2-1A state semifinals.

While both are listed 5-11, 185 pounds, Zach is more known for his fullback mentality, and Christian possesses a smooth style.

“He’d rather run you over. I’m more likely to run by them,” Christian said.

Christian was selected to play in the Kansas Shrine Bowl at Emporia, but had to decline the invitation because of scheduling conflicts.

“It was a very difficult decision for him,” Pat Smith said. “The game is for a worthy cause.”
