The Madison Bulldogs successfully defended their 8-Man Division I championship with a 30-12 win over South Gray this afternoon in Newton, KS.
Senior running back Kole Schankie rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Collin Kile ran for another. Kile also hooked up with Tanner Bybee for a 35 yard scoring strike to account for the other Bulldog touchdown.
South Gray trailed 16-0 at halftime but quickly gained momentum in the second half.
Wyatt Slaven's 34-yard TD pass to Coulter Croft cut the lead to 16-6 just a few minutes into the third quarter. Madison then fumbled on their ensuing possession setting up another Slaven touchdown pass, this time a 17 yard connection to Ronald Martens.
The Rebels could not convert on either 2-point conversion attempt and trailed 16-12 with 6:03 left in the quarter.
Madison responded quickly with a three-minute scoring drive. Schankie rattled off a big 31-yard run to move into Rebel territory and capped the drive with his second short TD run of the day. A conversion pass from Kile to Bybee stretched the lead to 24-12.
The Bulldogs would add another score early in the fourth quarter and would shut down South Gray for the win.
