The most exciting game of the night may have been Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s 32-31 win over McPherson. Class 5A’s Bullpups appeared to have control with a 24-6 lead at halftime when quarterback Tyler Matthews hit Cody Cape with a 24-yard TD as time expired. McPherson then led as much as 31-12 in the third quarter.
Kapaun responded by scoring the next 20 points of the game. The Crusaders closed the gap to 31-18 to close the third quarter. They scored again to make it 31-25 with 1:53 to go. Kapaun then recovered the onside kick and then scored and made the extra point with less than a minute to go.
The Crusaders will now travel to face Hutchinson, a 27-21 winner over Hays.

In 2-1A, Doniphan West used an interception and a Hail Mary pass in the final minute to beat St. Marys 32-26. The Bears had the advantage early with an 18-12 halftime lead. However, the game was knotted at 26 when St. Marys was driving at their own 30 with about a minute left in the game. Doniphan West then picked off a pass and converted on a 40-yard TD pass for the win.

Doniphan West will now host the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers, 49-0 winners over Jefferson Co. North. Colgan’s Christian Smith rushed for 178 and three TDs on four carries in the win. Christian’s twin brother Zach Smith added 130 yards and two TDs on 12 carries in the first-round win.

Riverside held off Lyndon 26-21 in a game that came down to the wire. Lyndon had a third-and-goal at the 1-yard line in the final minutes and were called for a false start penalty. On fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard-line, Riverside kept Lyndon out of the end zone with a quarterback sack.
Riverside will now advance to the second round and travel to face Centralia, a 46-7 winner overWabaunsee.

Stanton County rallied to beat Ellis 35-34. Leading 28-26 in the fourth quarter, Stanton County tried to add to its lead. However, the Trojans fumbled in the redzone and Ellis recovered. The Railroaders then traveled the length of the field and scored to take a 34-28 lead. Stanton County then responded with its own touchdown drive, scoring and making the extra point with 16 seconds left.
The Trojans’ win sets up a big game at home against Plainville, 52-21 winners over Sacred Heart.

Bishop Miege junior quarterback Montel Cozart passed for three TDs and ran for two more as the Stags dominated Topeka Highland Park 59-0. Miege will now host the Blue Valley –Stilwell Tigers in the second round. It will be a tough task as Blue Valley already got the best of Miege once this season, 24-21 in Week 4.
Blue Valley beat Lansing 56-7 Friday night.

Gardner-Edgerton sophomore Traevohn Wrench rushed for 458 yards and seven TDs on 25 carries as the Trailblazers outgunned Bonner Springs 76-40. Gardner-Edgerton moves on to the second round and will host Shawnee Heights, a 15-7 winner over Mill Valley.

In 6A, Shawnee Mission West broke a string of three consecutive first-round playoff exits by punishing Leavenworth 52-7. The Vikings advance to play at Olathe East in the next round – a team that defeated them 28-21 in Week 5. Leavenworth’s first trip to the playoffs since 1981 was a short one, but the progress coach Kevin Kopecky has made with the program is worth noting.

Lawrence quarterback Brad Strauss tried to give it a go with an injured ankle but was forced to leave the game in the third quarter, and the Lions fell 34-17 to Olathe East.
