Class 4A
Rose Hill took advantage of three Holton turnovers in knocking the second-ranked Wildcats from the 4A playoffs, 28-12. Jonny Pearson rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns for the fourth-ranked Rockets who moved to 9-1 and earned a second-round home game against Andale. Rob Riederer led Holton with 107 yards and a touchdown, but a 21-6 halftime lead was too much for the Wildcats to overcome.
Playing in one of the toughest leagues in Kansas is finally paying off this season for Blue Valley Southwest. The Timberwolves, the only 4A school in the Eastern Kansas League, picked up the first playoff win in school history on Tuesday with a 27-6 victory over Baldwin. Quarterback Aaron Ramsey rushed for two touchdowns for Southwest which improved to 5-5 on the season after winning their fifth straight game. The Timberwolves will move up to 5A next season, but until them they are a legitimate threat on the eastern side of 4A.
Garrett Griffin rushed 37 times for 295 yards and four touchdowns as defending state champion Louisburg pulled out a 27-20 road win over Fort Scott. Jonathan Stark led the Tigers in throwing for 186 yards on the night, while Dane Cummings rushed for two scores. Louisburg evened their record at 5-5 on the season and will play another SEK League opponent on Saturday when they host Chanute in the second round.
Paul Jones broke free on a 68-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lift KC Piper over Perry-Lecompton 28-21. It is the second consecutive season that the Pirates have eliminated the Kaws from the 4A playoffs as Piper beat Perry-Lecompton 20-13 in last year’s first round. Jeremy Immenschuh led the Kaws with a 145 yards rushing on the night.
Eudora advanced to the second round with a 12-0 win over DeSoto. It was the second time the Cardinals shutout their Frontier League rivals this season as Eudora won 8-0 in Week 4. Chris Pyle led Eudora with 125 yards on the ground.
For the second consecutive season, Hesston knocked out Concordia in the first round. The Swathers racked up 250 yards rushing on the night in edging the Panthers 19-16. Last year, Hesston beat Concordia 21-14 in the first round.
Ty Redington threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth as Mulvane rallied from a 13-7 halftime deficit to blowout Maize South, 43-13. Redington rushed for 75 yards and threw for 186 yards in the win. The Wildcats will travel to Topeka to take on top-ranked Hayden in the second round.
Buhler routed Holcomb 56-6 despite playing without the services of their star tailback Tanner Fisher. Fisher sat out with a staph infection in his knee, but sophomore Riley Allen stepped up and rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns for the Crusaders. Buhler quarterback Chandler Shantz threw for 175 yards and three scores on the night.
Class 3A
Logan Miner rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns as Rock Creek rolled past Effingham-Atchison County 46-14. The Mustangs built a 26-7 halftime lead behind Miner, who rushed for three touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass in the first half. KJ Dobbins added a125 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns for Rock Creek.
Bryce Chavis accounted for 285 yards of total offense as Riley County knocked out Sabetha 48-27. The Falcon quarterback threw for 168 yards and rushed for 117 more as Riley County earned a home rematch with Mid-East League rival Silver Lake on Saturday. The Eagles beat the Falcons 24-14 in Week 6 earlier this season.
Defending champion Silver Lake opened its title defense with a surprising 55-31 shootout victory over Council Grove. Quarterback Dailin Kruger threw for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles improved to 9-1 on the season. Council Grove finished its season at 3-7.
Frontenac jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead over Wellsville on a Bryce Burdette touchdown reception, but that’s all the points the Raiders would produce in a 24-7 loss to the Eagles. Wellsville would rally for a 12-7 halftime lead and eventually control the game with their defense. Frontenac played without injured starting quarterback Devon Keith.
Leon-Bluestem’s first ever playoff appearance was a short one as unbeaten Caney Valley flexed its muscles early in a 64-0 rout. The Bullpups led 49-0 at the end of the first quarter in winning their 10th game of the season. Bluestem finished their historic season with a 3-7 record.
Trent Stucky threw for 265 yards and five touchdowns as Sedgwick remained unbeaten with a 40-21 win over Hillsboro. Levi Vogt caught eight passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Daniel Vogt added a pair of touchdown receptions for the Cardinals. The playoff victory was the first in Sedgwick’s school history.
Lakin would jump out to a 14-0 lead against Phillipsburg on the road, but the Panthers would outscore the Broncs 23-14 in the second half to win 37-28. Shawn Newlan and Matt Schneider each rushed for a pair of touchdowns as Phillipsburg advanced. Chandon Moreno and Blake Geubelle each scored two touchdowns for Lakin.
Garden Plain broke open a 21-21 halftime tie with a big second half in beating Southeast of Saline, 42-29. Joey Capul rushed for 187 yards and two scores for the Owls who improved to 9-1 on the season. Garden Plain quarterback Lucas Jennings threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Owls earned a home game Saturday against Wichita Collegiate.
Class 8M-I
Third-ranked Lakeside-Downs eliminated second-ranked Lebo 48-20 in Downs on Tuesday night. Miles Thomas carried 18 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights who avenged last season’s 50-42 first-round loss to the Wolves. Alex Renken threw for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Lakeside. Lebo’s talented quarterback Trevor White left the game early in the second half with an injury.
Coulter Croft rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns as South Gray routed Pretty Prairie 60-12. Pretty Prairie scored the first six points of each half, but the Rebels dominated the rest of the way. South Gray led 36-6 at halftime. Wyatt Slaven added 134 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
Osborne continued their offensive assault by outscoring Little River 70-44. The Bulldogs led the Redskins 44-36 at halftime, and won the second half 26-8 to pull away. Ethan Slothower rushed for 311 yards and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs, while Damon Schurr added 246 yards on the ground with five scores.
Macksville came up with a key stop on a two-point conversion attempt to hold off Ness City 42-40. After trailing 12-0 early, the Mustangs would eventually lead by as much as 36-18 in the third quarter before the Eagles’ Colin Foos hit Trevor Hawkins on a touchdown pass to pull Ness City within 10. Macksville’s Adam Oak would respond by returning the ensuing kickoff for a score and putting the Mustangs up 42-26. Ness City would score twice in the fourth quarter on touchdown runs by Dalton Gantz and Foos, but the two-point try was unsuccessful in tying the game. Macksville quarterback Seth Filbert threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs.
Class 8M-II
Dylan Wissman rushed for 314 yards and five touchdowns as Otis-Bison drilled Moscow 68-20 in the first round of the Division II playoffs. The Cougars hit Moscow with a barrage of 36 first-quarter points to put the game away. Patrick Piper added a pair of touchdown runs for Otis-Bison which held Moscow 44 points below their average scoring output for the season.
Ashland used a 44-point second quarter to roll past Chase 74-24. Chance and Austin Stebens rushed for three touchdowns each, and Jay Luerman added three scores of his own in the win. Ashland will travel to Kensington on Saturday to take on second-ranked Thunder Ridge.
Victoria outscored Cheylin 28-6 in the second half as the Knights advanced with a 36-18 win. Cheylin built a 12-8 halftime lead on the strength of Jeremiah White. The senior back rushed for 227 yards and two scores on the night, and finished the season with 2,006 yards rushing and 31 touchdowns. Corey Dinkel led Victoria with 286 yards on the ground and a pair of scores for Victoria.
Baileyville B&B led Linn 22-16 after one quarter on Tuesday, but that as close as the Bulldogs would get as the Falcons pulled away for a 62-16 win. Cody Heiman rushed for 167 yards, four touchdowns, and caught a touchdown pass in the win. B&B quarterback Eric Huerter left the game with an injury and did not return. Sophomore Dustin Rottinghaus stepped in under center and threw for 86 yards and a touchdown.
