The biggest change to the Kpreps Top 5 Rankings occurred in Class 6A. Four teams shuffled spots in our poll as a result of Olathe South’s 29-10 victory over Olathe North. The Falcons recorded a safety as a result of an errant Olathe North shotgun snap late in the first half, and then returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to gain all the momentum.
The win also propelled the Falcons from fifth to third in our latest Top 5 poll. Olathe North dropped two spots to #4; just ahead of Olathe East who the Eagles defeated 29-14 in Week 1.
Manhattan ascends to the #2 spot after beating Topeka Highland Park 58-12. The win gave Joe Shartz’s Indians the outright Centennial League title.
In Class 5A, Gardner-Edgerton re-enters the rankings after handling previous #4 McPherson, 41-21. The Trailblazers replace the Bullpups in our poll thanks to their ability to dictate Friday night’s game with their ground attack which featured 223 yards and four touchdowns from sophomore Traevohn Wrench. Gardner-Edgerton now begins a touch district which includes top-ranked Blue Valley – Stilwell, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pittsburg.
Top-ranked Blue Valley – Stilwell blocked a Blue Valley Northwest field goal attempt with just over a minute to play to secure a 14-13 win and remain unbeaten.
Elsewhere in 5A, Bishop Carroll climbs one spot to #4 after getting by arch rival Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 20-13.
The Class 4A top 5 saw some change as last week’s #4-ranked Ulysses Tigers fell to 3A #3 Scott City 27-13 in the Kpreps Game of the Week for Week 6. The Beavers and Tigers were delayed until Saturday due to lightning on Friday night.
With their loss, Ulysses falls out of our top 5 and is replaced with Rose Hill in the #4 spot. The Rockets rolled past Mulvane, 38-7 to improve to 5-1 on the season with their only blemish coming 18-10 to third-ranked Buhler in Week 1.
Holton and Basehor-Linwood each recoreded Week 6 wins over previously unbeaten opponents. The Wildcats shutout Perry-Lecompton 47-0; while Basehor-Linwood outscored Mill Valley 42-21 to win the Kaw Valley League title.
The top 5 in each of the remaining classes stayed the same as a result of Week 6 action.
In Class 3A, fourth-ranked Beloit earned an emotional road win over previously unbeaten Southeast of Saline, 22-12. In that game, Beloit sophomore Jadon Adams collapsed and was life-flighted to a Wichita hospital where he remains in critical condition. We at Kpreps.com join the rest of the state in wishing Jadon, his family, and his Beloit Trojan family our sincere thoughts and prayers.
Elsewhere in Class 3A, #5 Silver Lake shutout Riley County in the second half to claim a 24-14 win. The Eagles will take on arch-rival Rossville (6-0) in Week 7.
All five ranked teams in Class 2-1A rolled to double-digit wins in district play resulting in no change to the rankings.
The top five polls in both 8-Man Division I and Division II also remained unchanged this week.
Week 7, however, could produce significant changes in the 8-Man polls as several big games will take place.
In 8-Man Division I, top ranked Madison will travel to #2 Lebo; third-ranked Lakeside-Downs will take on a high scoring Mankato-Rock Hills team, and fifth-ranked Central Burden will take on unbeaten Sedan.
Division II will also include some marquee match-ups in Week 7.
The traditional Twin Valley League classic of Baileyville B&B and Hanover will have a bit of a different feel with the Wildcats sitting at 3-2 an outside the rankings.
Also in Division II, fourth-ranked Ashland will take on an unbeaten Moscow Wildcat team which is averaging 74 points per game.
Finally, #5 South Barber will return to action in Week 7 to visit unbeaten South Haven in district play. The Chieftains received a victory by forfeit in their Week 6 scheduled game with Attica.
