Although Week 4 did not result in a lot of changes to the Kpreps Top 5 Rankings, a couple of ranked teams made major statements last Friday night.
We’ll start in Class 5A where Bishop Miege not only won at Gardner-Edgerton, but shutout the Trailblazers 34-0. Miege quarterback Montel Cozart was fantastic; throwing for 230 yards and four touchdowns. The Stag defense may have been even more impressive in limiting Gardner-Edgerton to just 150 total yards and shutting down Traevohn Wrench to just 46 yards on 21 carries.
Miege has an even larger test this week as the #3 ranked Stags will host top-ranked Blue Valley – Stilwell.
The Plainville Cardinals are just two years removed from back-to-back nine loss seasons, but on Friday night they send a message to the rest of Class 2-1A. Plainville beat Mid-Continent League rival Norton 53-13 to solidify their place in the rankings, and have moved up to #4 as a result. Their true test will come this week when they travel to Smith Center to take on the unbeaten Redmen.
A slight change occurred in Class 4A where Paola is up one spot to #4 after a 35-12 win over previously unbeaten Pittsburg. The Panthers move slightly ahead of #5 Ulysses which shutout Clayton (NM), 49-0.
The Class 3A picture will receive some clarity after Week 4 as #1 Conway Springs will play host to fourth-ranked Garden Plain. The Cardinals and Owls winner will not only likely decide the Central Plains League champion, but provide an indication of who will be one of the favorites on the west side of 3A.
Staying in Class 3A, third-ranked Silver Lake’s win over Atchison on Friday was a monumental one. Coach C.J. Hamilton earned his 335th win on Friday tying him with former Clifton-Clyde coach Ed Buller for the Kansas state record. The Eagles first chance to place Hamilton alone in the record books comes in Week 4 when Silver Lake travels to defending 4A champion Louisburg.
While the Top 5 in both 8-Man classes held true to form on Friday, Week 4 is sure to shake things up as a premiere match-up will take place in Division II on Friday.
Third-ranked Otis-Bison will travel to take on #2 Thunder Ridge in what figures to be one of the top games in the state this season. The Cougars knocked Chase from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 70-22 win on Friday, while Thunder Ridge rolled past WaKeeney-Trego, 56-6.
The Top 5 in 8-Man Division I remained unchanged as #2 Lebo passed the only real test of the week with a 36-14 win over Waverly.
Finally, the Class 6A top five also remained in place. Number three Manhattan got a key road win at Emporia, and Olathe East remains at #4 despite surviving a one-point win over Lawrence in which they stopped the potential game-winning two-point conversion late in the game.
