For the second consecutive year, the Week 2 Kansas High School Football schedule was hampered by bad weather. Several games across the state were either ended early or postponed until tomorrow.
Some parts of the state were not impacted by the lightning and storms, while other stayed up late to get games in.
In one of the better games in the state, third-ranked McPherson held off Salina South 41-39. Quarterback Tyler Matthews threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns for the Bullpups, but the McPherson defense came up big holding the Cougars on third and fourth down at the 40-yard line as South tried to get into field goal range.
Switching to the 8 Man-II ranks, our state Game of the Week as picked by you the fans featured #2 Hanover and #4 Thunder Ridge. Thunder Ridge was impressive in finishing off last year’s Division I runners-up Hill City, 50-0 earlier this week. We knew the Longhorns were loaded, but maybe not this loaded. Thunder Ridge led 14-0 at halftime and 20-0 in the third quarter before the Wildcats got on the board. In the end, Blaine Hrabe’s three touchdown passes were too much for the TVL power to overcome as Thunder Ridge got a huge win.
Sticking in 8 Man, the Central Prairie League featured an intriguing matchup with #5 Otis-Bison visiting the newly formed Central Plains Oilers. Central Plains was formed this year from the consolidation of Claflin and Quivira Heights. Given the fact that those two schools have been perennial powers, and that the Oilers returned a solid nucleus, it appeared that Otis-Bison would be tested. The Cougars found themselves in a 24-14 game in the third quarter before rattling off 26 straight points for a decisive 50-14 win.
Other games of note on Friday:
Can you believe that Wichita Collegiate is 0-2? The Spartans lost a 34-12 decision at home to Rose Hill.
Macksville scored 74 points in the FIRST QUARTER in an 82-0 win over Wichita Word of Life. Fans may remember Smith Center scoring 73 in the opening quarter of a playoff win against Plainville in 2007.
Speaking of Plainville, the Cardinals were impressive again this week as they disposed of Ellis, 42-6.
In a North Central Activities Association battle, Southeast of Saline showed a great deal of separation between themselves and a solid Sacred Heart team with a 57-7 win.
In the southeast corner of the state, Pittsburg traveled to Columbus to battle the Titans for the Coal Bucket and came away with a decisive 46-7 win.
After losing quarterback Tyler VanCleave to an injury in week one, Galena still put up 54 points in blowing out their CNC rival Baxter Springs, 54-14. Senior Levi Sturgis made the transition from wide receiver to quarterback for the Bulldogs, and the offense showed no ill effects.
In one of the state’s best rivalries, St. Mary’s Colgan traveled two miles north to Frontenac and won the Black & Blue Bowl 42-6.
Finally, a week after surprising defending 4A champion Louisburg, the Eudora Cardinals found themselves on the wrong end of a 17-13 decision against St. James Academy
Early results from the Frontier League suggest that Paola may be the favorite in what has become 4A’s toughest league. The Panthers turned their League showdown into a rout as they blanked De Soto, 36-0.
