As we wind down the 2010 Kansas high school football season, several changes have occurred to our Kpreps rankings. Our rankings do not necessarily reflect the order of finish for teams in each classification, but our opinions on who were the top five teams in each class. We will release a final poll on Monday, November 29th.

The biggest change in this week’s poll comes in Class 5A where Bishop Carroll shutout the top-ranked and six-time defending champion Hutchinson Salthawks 21-0. The Carroll defense held Hutch to just 93 yards rushing on the night as the Salthawks threatened only once. Hutch fullback Ben Heeney was limited to 95 yards rushing on 30 carries.

On the eastern side of 5A, Blue Valley – Stilwell upset many in the state’s favorite to win the class, the Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers. Despite Trailblazer quarterback Bubba Starling’s 33-carry, 399-yard, 5-touchdown performance, Blue Valley advanced with a 45-42 victory thanks to a huge performance from their quarterback Kyle Zimmerman. The junior Zimmerman threw for 331 yards and six touchdowns, five of which went to Jacob McDermott who had 192 receiving yards. Under first-year Coach Eric Driskell, Blue Valley will take on Bishop Carroll in the schools’ eighth state championship appearance on Saturday in Emporia

Class 6A featured two semifinal games decided by single digits. Top-ranked Wichita Heights rallied from down 28-0 and 35-14 to slip by Dodge City 42-38, and Olathe North avenged an earlier loss to Olathe East, 13-6.

Holton moved up to the second spot in our Class 4A poll with a 42-7 road thrashing of last week’s #2 team Buhler. The Crusaders drop one spot to #3, followed by Topeka Hayden and Paola. Louisburg retained the top spot in 4A, and will take on Holton for the state championship in Salina.

The top two teams advanced in Class 3A and Class 2-1A and will meet for the state championship in Hutchinson and Hays respectively. Conway Springs ran past Beloit 59-22 to set up a showdown with Silver Lake. The Eagles shutout rival Rossville 38-0.

St. Mary’s Colgan retains the top spot in 2-1A with a 35-24 come-from-behind victory at #3 Olpe. The Panthers will take on #2 Meade, 44-26 winners over #5 Stanton County.

Congratulations to the Madison Bulldogs and Baileyville B&B Falcons who each won state championships in their respective 8-man classes last weekend in Newton. Madison held off a late rally to edged Hill City 52-44, while B&B outscored Otis-Bison 50-34. For a complete listing of our Kpreps.com polls, check out our rankings section.
