Breakdown of Rankings by Classification:

6A

Even though they slipped up against rival Blue Valley North a few weeks back, Blue Valley Northwest has been the talk of 6A boys basketball all season. The Huskies remain at the top spot once again this week. Wichita East (2), which features the best record in 6A at 17-1, has been slowly climbing all season and are a team to watch for in 6A. Shawnee Mission Northwest (3) has surprised a lot of people in the Sunflower League this season and haven’t lost in nearly a month. Lawrence (4) and defending 5A state champion Shawnee Mission South (5) round out this week’s top five.

5A

Lansing, led by head coach Rod Briggs, has been impressive all season and remain perfect at 18-0. Joe Schneider (15.6 ppg), Zach Jackson (15.4 ppg) and Khalil Bailey (12.7 ppg) all are scoring in double figures for the Lions. Lansing picked up two wins over ranked opponents last week (4A-I Basheor Linwood and 5A Mill Valley). The more you look at this classification, the more loaded it seems. Hays (18-0) and Highland Park (17-1), who are both playing great basketball, round out this week’s top three teams in 5A.

4A-I

Brand new division means it could be wide open to see who will get this year’s first ever 4A-I crown. McPherson, a basketball power in Kansas at the 5A level for years, is again ranked atop of this classification. Throw the Bullpups’ only loss out, as they lost to a 6A opponent (Wichita North) in tourney play in January. They remain perfect against 4A/5A competition this season. Basheor-Linwood doesn’t drop in the rankings and remains at the two spot after losing to 5A #1 Lansing last Tuesday. Look out for Independence at the five spot as they have been dominating SEK league competition over the past month (last loss 1/10/14). Coffeyville Field Kindley is also a very dangerous team at the #6 spot and their all-stater, James Newton, could be the best overall high school athlete in Kansas this season.

4A-II

With this new classification happening this year it means its wide open. At last  unofficial look, only 10 teams had winning records of the 32 in this classification. Andale is the new number one team this week after Scott City (2) lost to Holcomb last week. Eudora (3), behind the play of  brothers Andrew and Mitchell Ballock, has been a sleeper all season and will be a very serious contender in this classification. Holton (4) and Concordia (5) round out this week’s top five.

3A

Hesston remains perfect and at the top spot in 3A boys. The Swathers are winning every contest by an average of 21.9 points per game. Eureka, who is ranked second, is also undefeated on the season and nobody has came closer than 14 points of beating them on the season. The Tornadoes are beating opponents on average by 32.1 points per game. Sabetha (3), Council Grove (4) and Beloit (5) are also in this week’s top five.

2A

St. John has been the talk of this classification all season. The Tigers, led by head coach Clint Kinnamon, are winning every contest on average by 31.3 points. St. John features all-state selection Dean Wade (6-8 Jr.), who is averaging 22.5 points per game. West Elk (2), Valley Falls (3), Central Plains (4) and St. Mary’s Colgan (5) round out this week’s top five. Central Plains and St. John are in the same sub-state. Central Plains only three losses on the season are all to St. John with the possibility of them meeting a fourth time in substate. Colgan (5) and West Elk (2) are also in same substate with only one team moving on to the state tournament in Manhattan.

1A-I

MDCV remains atop of this classification again this week in 1A-I boys. Rounding out this week’s top five are Hoxie (2), Hanover (3), Valley Heights (4) and Centralia (5). MDCV is winning every game on average by 26 points per contest. They feature two players that are at least 6-feet-6 in Matt Jones (6’6 Senior) and Mark Price (6’9 Senior).

1A-II

St. Johns-Tipton out of Beloit remains the #1 team in 1A-II boys. Three players average at least 11 points a game for the Blujays (Trey Dubbert, Connor Eilert & Luke Eilert). South Barber (2), Fowler (3), Wallace County (4) and Baileyville B&B (5) are others ranked in this week’s top five.
