The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA), Kpreps.Com (@kpreps), and Kansas-Sports.Com (@sportsinkansas) will be in partnership all season to release the KBCA rankings every Monday.
6A
Defending state champion, Blue Valley Northwest, remains atop of this classification. They are currently ranked #17 in the country by Max Preps. The Huskies, who returned all five starters from last season, only loss this season is to Apple Valley (MN), who is ranked in the top five nationally by Max Preps. Northwest picked up a 19 point victory over Wichita Southeast to win the Valley Center Tourney last week. #3 Lawrence picked up a huge victory over previous 5A #1 Highland Park (48-47) to win the Topeka Tourney. #5 Wichita East lost to 5A Hays in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions Final and moved down three spots. Defending 5A champion, SM South (4), picked up three wins over tourney week and won the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute, including an overtime victory over Olathe North. #9 Free State would win the loaded McPherson tourney with a victory over Shawnee Mission East in the championship.
5A
The new #1 team this week are the Indians of Hays High. Hays may be the surprise of this classification and became the Champion of the Dodge City Tournament of Champions last week. The Indians (12-0) knocked off 6A then #2 Wichita East in the title game and also picked up two more 6A wins in the tourney (Hutchinson, Manhattan). Highland Park, who moved from #1 to #4, picked up its first loss on the season, losing to 6A Lawrence in the Topeka Tourney. #3 Goddard-Eisenhower, paced by Trevon Evans (23.0 PPG), remains undefeated at 12-0 on the season.
4A-I
#2 McPherson picked up its first loss of the season this week in their own tourney, losing to a bigger opponent in 6A Wichita North. The Bullpups would later beat 6A Blue Valley West, who took second in 6A last season, in the same tourney. Baldwin (11-1) would take first in their own tournament by knocking off Augusta (61-57) in the title game to replace McPherson as the new number one.
4A-II
Scott City won the championship in the Colby Tournament over Palmer Ridge (CO) and also picked up two other out of state wins. The Beavers move into the top spot and replace Andale (2). Eudora (4) is on a four game winning streak and won the Tonganoxie Tournament last week, with victories over Jefferson West, Tonganoxie, and DeSoto.
3A
Hesston remains at the top of this classification and won the Hillsboro tournament with a championship victory over Holcomb (57-41). The Swathers remain perfect at 12-0 on the season. #3 Sabetha (12-0) picked up three wins last week to win the Burlington Tourney, including a championship victory over 4A-I #8 Paola (53-39).
2A
St. John has been the talk of this classification all season long. The defending 1A-I state champ, led by head coach Clint Kinnamon, are winning games by an average margin of 33.9 points per game. The Tigers had their closest game of the season this past week in a 50-42 win over #5 Central Plains in their own tourney’s championship. It marked the second time St. John has beat Central Plains this season. #4 St. Mary’s Colgan (8-2), who won the Tony Dubray Classic (Liberal, MO) last week, remains undefeated against all Kansas opponents on the season. Oswego, who is also in Colgan’s sub-state, moved up to the number two spot in this week’s rankings.
1A-I
MDCV remains at the top spot in the 1A-I classification as they head into their Lyon County League Tournament this week. The Trojans (11-0) are winning every game this season by an average margin of 28.5 points per contest. MDCV features Mark Price (6-9 senior) and Matt Jones (6-6 senior) that will be hard for most teams in Kansas to match up with.
1A-II
For the first time all season, Beloit-St. John’s Tipton moves into the top spot of 1A-II. Fowler (2) and South Barber (3) round out the top three in this week’s rankings.
