Three new teams enter our Kpreps.com rankings after week nine action. The Baldwin Bulldogs (8-1) join the 4A poll at #5 after beating Eudora 20-13. Baldwin, led by their talented running back Josh Hoffman, will host Blue Valley Southwest (3-6) to open the playoffs on Tuesday night.
In Class 3A, the Norton Bluejays have been just outside our top five all season and leap up to the fourth spot with Garden Plain’s loss to Halstead. The Bluejays (8-0) remained unbeaten with a 35-22 win over rival Phillipsburg and eliminating the Panthers from the playoffs.
In Class 2-1A, little changed as a result of the big game between top-ranked St. Mary’s Colgan and fourth-ranked Olpe. The Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead before Colgan took to the air to score 28 straight points, and then held on for a 28-21 win.
LaCrosse enters the 2-1A rankings at #5 thanks to Lyndon’s win over previously fifth-ranked Oswego. LaCrosse needed a late rally to overcome a 16-6 deficit in beating Plainville 32-16. Leopard tailback Marcus Moeder continues to be effective despite trying to recover from a nagging foot injury. The speedy senior back scored on touchdown runs of 61 and 52 yards in the win.
Week nine resulted in no changes to our rankings for 6A, 5A, or the two 8 Man divisions. That’s not to say that some teams had scares. Manhattan needed two touchdowns in the game’s final three minutes to top rival Junction City 21-14, and Dodge City rallied from a 26-0 hole to top Garden City 29-26 thanks to a Jared Helfrich touchdown run with just over a minute to go.
