The Lincoln Leopards finished their best regular season in three decades with a 50-30 win over Little River to improve to 8-1 on the season. The Redskins gave the Leopards a scare pulling within two points as Lincoln led only 18-16 at half. The Leopards opened the second half fired up and pulled away thanks to the running of senior Brady Coover and the strong hands of wideouts Tryaun Richard and Kevin Street. Little River added a touchdown late to shrink the margin. Lincoln will host a first-round playoff game Tuesday as Hill City and the Reggie Jordan show come to town.
A week removed from posting their first loss of the season to Goodland the Phillipsburg Panthers finished their season 7-2 with a 35-22 loss to undefeated Mid-Continent League rival Norton Thursday. The Panthers made a game of it getting as close as 27-22 after being down 27-7 at one point. The Bluejays pulled away though and secured an undefeated 8-0 regular season and a first-round home playoff game.
Tate Omli helped lead the Ell-Saline Cardinals to their second straight win with a come-from-behind 40-35 victory over Moundridge in a non-district game. Omli was efficient in the win - only his second game back since a week two injury - completing 12 of 17 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals also got 117 yards from running back Zach Willis and 97 yards from fullback Jose Arias. Now Ell-Saline awaits the result of Friday's LaCrosse/Plainville match-up to determine if the playoffs are in their future. Moundridge had already clinched a playoff berth as runner-up district 5.
Halstead got a huge night from quarterback Simon McKee as he helped the Dragons upset Garden Plain 19-14. McKee completed 8 of 11 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns including a 90 yard first quarter touchdown completion to Dakota Becker and a 56 yard third quarter scoring strike to Ryan Bibb. Tanner Strohl powered in a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The win gives the Dragons a solid 6-3 season, but leaves them home for the playoffs as Garden Plain had already secured a trip to the post season with wins over Hutch Trinity and Sedgwick.
In a battle of two teams at the bottom of 4A District 16 Colby got a thrilling last second victory over Russell. Russell jumped out to a commanding 20-0 lead with 11:17 left in the second quarter but the Eagles rallied and tied the game at 40 with 7:54 in the fourth quarter. With three seconds left Colby quarterback Kale Arnberger completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Corbin Stephens and the two-point conversion gave the Eagles a 48-40 win. Both teams finish the season at 4-5.
The Sylvan-Lucas Unified Mustangs started a promising season 4-0 but have since lost four straight including a 46-0 defeat at the hands of Lakeside last week. Thursday night the Mustangs rebounded with a 54-44 win over first year 8-Man team Wakeeney-Trego. The Mustangs finish the year at 5-4 with the win while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-7 in the loss.
Matt Bromley broke his own single season SEK touchdown record scoring four times in Independence's 53-13 win over Parsons to give him 30 on the season, one-more than his mark of 29 from a year ago.
Cheney shocked Wichita Trinity 32-7 as the Knights appeared to have a let down following last week's devastating 30-26 loss to Andale. The loss creates a three-way tie at 1-2 in District 12 and delivers Maize South, a team in only it's second-year of existence, a trip to the playoffs.
Galena held on to beat Riverton 21-14 to win the CNC Championship in a battle of rivals separated by only four miles. Riverton drove to the Bulldog 2-yard line with 8 seconds left thanks to three key Greyson Spriggs’ runs and a facemask penalty. Spriggs was stopped short of the end-zone on the next play, but appeared to call timeout with 3 seconds left. The timeout wasn’t granted and the game ended with Galena on top 21-14. It will be Riverton, however, that will advance to the playoffs by virtue of having the second most points in the district tie-breaker system. Galena finished its season at 7-2, but does not make the playoffs.
