Ty Suggs broke a 36-36 tie with a fourth quarter 9-yard touchdown run as Manhattan edged Topeka High 42-36.

Congratulations to Coach Kevin Kopecky and the Leavenworth Pioneers for stopping a 21-game losing streak with a 26-6 win over KC Wyandotte. The win was Leavenworth’s first since beating Shawnee Mission North 33-27 on September 19, 2008.

Blue Valley – Stilwell outscored St. Thomas Aquinas 38-20 in a key game in a loaded 5A District 4. The Tigers ‘ win puts the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Aquinas to knock off rival Gardner-Edgerton in front of a national audience on ESPNU next week.

In the other half of that district, Gardner-Edgerton wasted no time getting on the board on a 31-yard Bubba Starling run, but Pittsburg would answer back with a two-play drive that resulted in a Marcus Striplin 64-yard touchdown reception from Jordan Elliot. The Blazers would score again to lead 14-7, and Pittsburg’s response – a 15 play drive -- ended in a missed field goal. Gardner would prove to be too much from there on, however, returning a punt for a score and taking advantage of multiple Purple Dragon turnovers in winning 49-14.

Class 4A’s top-ranked Hayden Wildcats had little trouble with unbeaten Royal Valley. The Wildcats shutout the Panthers 54-0 to set up a district showdown with Holton which defeated Wamego 55-0.

Coffeyville slipped past Labette County 63-55 in a game that was 35-34 at halftime.

In the War on 24, Silver Lake edged arch-rival Rossville 34-28.

In one of the biggest games in the state this week, Garden Plain found a way to slow down the Hutch Trinity offense in slipping by the Celtics 14-7. Hutch Trinity’s bid for more late heroics ended when quarterback Derek Racette’s 29-yard heave into the end zone fell incomplete on the game’s final play.

In the other half of that 3A district, Trent Stucky and Sedgwick edged Halstead 41-35 in overtime to win a battle of 5-1 teams.

Class 3A District 1 featured four teams entering tonight with identical 5-1 records. The two match-ups pitted the CNC against the Tri Valley League with the CNC once again coming out on top. Galena scored late to top Cherryvale 25-21, and Riverton and Caney Valley played to a 6-6 tie before the Rams won 12-6 in overtime.

Third-ranked Olpe went to fifth-ranked Oswego and survived another close game with a 14-6 win over the Indians in a battle of ranked teams in Class 2-1A. Oswego outgained the Eagles 370-220 total yards on the night, but squandered several scoring opportunities deep in Olpe territory in losing their second straight. The loss likely will eliminate Oswego from the playoffs unless either Colgan or Olpe were to get upset in the remaining two weeks. Olpe eliminated the Indians 20-16 in the second round of the playoffs last season.

Stanton County got a quality 14-0 shutout of previously unbeaten Elkhart in Class 2-1A. The win by the Trojans puts pressure on Elkhart which will now likely have to upset Meade to make the playoffs.

In the feature 8 Man game of the week, #2 Madison shutout an injury depleated Lebo team 46-0. Lebo , which entered ranked third in 8 Man-I, played without four starters which went down in the past two weeks.

Goessel got its second win of the season in a 96-70 shootout over St. John’s Military.

South Haven took control of District 4 in 8 Man-II with a 38-22 win over South Barber. The Cardinals improved to 7-0 and are the only undefeated team remaining in that district which also feature Caldwell.

In a match-up of 5-1 teams, Hope bested Quivira Heights 38-14 to take the lead in 8 Man-II District 2.
