In at match-up of the top two teams in 8 Man Division II, #1 Baileyville B&B kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to top #2 Hanover 31-28. Logan Haug kicked the winning field goal in overtime; the first of his career. Haug was equally important on defense in OT forcing and recovering a fumble on Hanover’s second play before the Falcons’ winning possession. B&B raced out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter, but Hanover would outscore the Falcons by the same margin in the fourth quarter to force overtime. B&B forced five Hanover turnovers on the night.
Perhaps the state’s biggest showdown between Class 5A’s #2 Gardner-Edgerton and #3 McPherson turned to a high scoring track meet as the Blazers outscored the Bullpups 49-42. The game turned into a quarterback showcase. Blazer quarterback Bubba Starling rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns while completing five of nine passes for 118 yards. McPherson quarterback Tyler Matthews did his damage with his arm. Matthews completed 24 of 35 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns. Christian Ulsaker caught ten balls for 145 yards and two scores for the Bullpups.
In Class 2-1A, #4 Oswego dominated a scoreless first quarter forcing three Colgan turnovers on the Panthers first eight snaps. But in the end, the Panther rushing attack behind junior backs Christian and Zach Smith was just too much in a 42-8 Colgan win. The Smith twins took over in the second quarter as Christian outraced the Indian defense on a toss play for a 74-yard score to cut the Oswego led to 8-6. After a three-and-out, Zach broke free for a 64-yard TD run to give Colgan the lead. Christian finished with 193 yards rushing and two scores on 13 carries, while Zach added 148 yards and two scores on 11 carries as the Panthers grinded out 414 yards rushing.
In a battle of unbeatens in the Frontier League, Louisburg took advantage of three second-half turnovers in knocking off Baldwin 42-26. Louisburg scored 21 straight points in the second half to break open a 21-20 game highlighted by Alex Gentges’ 48-yard interception return for a touchdown. Garrett Griffin rushed for 209 yards and two scores for the Wildcats.
Maddie Johnson rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and his younger brother Phoenix added 105 yards and two more scores as Webb City (Mo.) never trailed in a 34-26 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Webb City is ranked #2 in Missouri Class 4, while Aquinas is ranked #4 in Kansas Class 5A. Richard Davila threw for 248 yards for the Saints, but was intercepted two times.
Jefferson Co. North surprised Wathena in Class 2-1A with a late touchdown and two-point conversion and a 15-14 win. Jefferson Co. North had won just one game on the season, but rallied to knock off previously unbeaten Wathena.
Pretty Prairie shut down Kiowa County quarterback Ross Binford and forced four turnovers as the #1 Bulldogs shutout the fifth ranked Mavericks 48-0. Binford finished with just 72 yards rushing on the night; far shy of the 308 yards per game he’d been averaging in the Mavericks’ first five games.
Quarterback Ron Baker rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as Scott City built a 23-0 halftime lead en route to a 38-12 win over Ulysses. Baker added another touchdown pass in the second half as the Beavers remained unbeaten.
