A first look at week three reveals some scores surprising to the extent that we felt they needed to be verified a couple of times.
Let’s start in the Central Prairie League where the St. John Tigers may have pulled off the upset of the night by shocking the number three ranked team in 8-Man Division II, Quivira Heights 44-36.
In Class 6A, the showdown between #4 Olathe East and #1 Olathe North turned out to surprisingly be a mismatch in favor of the Hawks. Brandon Willingham rushed for 188 yards and three scores as Olathe East shutout the defending 6A champs 25-0.
The other feature game in the state saw Class 5A’s #2 Gardner-Edgerton outscore #5 Bishop Miege 43-29. The Blazers gashed the Stags for over 400 yards rushing as QB Bubba Starling ran for 173 yards, RB Brett Jensen ran for 158 yards, and Ryan Weber added 94 yards.
Rose Hill bounced back from two disappointing losses to Buhler and Collegiate to shock Andale 31-8. Andale, ranked number two in the state in Class 4A, will try and rebound against undefeated Wichita Collegiate next week.
Paola stepped out the Frontier League to get their first win of the season 34-14 over Pittsburg High at Hutchinson Field. The Panthers ran over the Purple Dragons as Skylar Hawkins rushed for more than 250 yards for Mike Dumpert’s team.
Junior Blue QB Skylar Curtis threw for 220 yards and rushed for 160 yards rushing with five TDs, and Washburn Rural needed every bit to slip past Shawnee Heights, 38-35.
In the CNC, Galena led Frontenac 8-2 at the half before pulling away for a 28-2 win.
The Girard Trojans stepped out of the CNC in a big way in thrashing Osawatomie 63-14. The Trojans racked up 370 yards rushing in the first half, and did not attempt a pass in the game.
Hanover restored order in the Twin Valley League beating Axtell, 54-6. Axtell had beaten highly-ranked Clifton-Clyde 40-6 in week two.
Jetmore-Hodgeman County outscored South Gray 46-36 in a key 8-man match-up in southwest Kansas. While Evan Kreger didn’t score ten touchdowns, he did rush for more than 300 yards in the Longhorn win.
Defending 8-Man Division I Champion Quinter lost for the first time in ten games as Sylvan-Lucas Unified knocked off the Bulldogs 32-22.
For the first time in five seasons, Parsons has won consecutive games. Dustin Perkins Vikings drilled their arch-rival Labette County on Friday 42-7, a week after snapping a 21-game losing streak.
Ingalls moved to 3-0 by beating Satanta 58-12. This game was rare in that it featured an 8-man Division II team in Ingalls, against a 2-1A team in Satanta.
