Weather turned out to be the story across the state in week two of the Kansas high school football season.
Several games were either delayed, postponed, or even called final early.
There were some great games decided in the final seconds and on the final play.
Fort Scott stopped Coffeyville on a two-point attempt with no time left on the clock to preserve a 28-27 win. It was the first win for head coach Bob Campbell’s first since returning to the Tiger sidelines. Campbell guided the Tigers to a 124-34 record and two state titles over 14 seasons before stepping aside in 2005.
The Concordia Panthers held off the defending 2-1A state champion Centralia Panthers 44-40. Centralia fumbled near the Concordia goal-line with under a minute to go.
In Central Prairie League action, Quivira Heights held Macksville on a 4th-and-goal with under 30 seconds left to hold on for a 36-30 win.
Several other scores from tonight left an impression.
Pittsburg High dominating Columbus late to win back the Coal Bucket. The Purple Dragons wore down the Titans in the second half to turn a 7-0 halftime lead into a 30-0 win.
In the Mid-Continent, Phillipsburg finally got over the hump and bested Smith Center 19-14 after several close encounters in recent years.
Lyndon raced out to another big lead and held on to beat Council Grove 39-34 in the Flint Hills League. How good does 2-1A District One look now with Lyndon (2-0), Oswego (2-0), Colgan (2-0), and Olpe(2-0) all battling for two playoff spots. All four would have had a real shot of advancing to the quarterfinal round under last year’s playoff system.
Hutch Trinity is for real again. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given the amount of talent the Celtics have back, but a blowout win against HOA rival Ell-Saline for a second year in a row solidifies their top five ranking in our poll.
What a great win for Tom Audley and the Andover Central Jaguars. In only their second game as a 5A school the Jags take down a 5A giant in Salina Central, 7-6.
The Twin Valley League may have just gotten stronger. Axtell drilled Clifton-Clyde 40-6 to perhaps present another contender in 8-Man Division I.
Inman looks to be a much stronger team in the Heart of America League this fall behind the legs of Luke Ropp. The Teutons beat rival Moundridge 30-6 last week, and narrowly lost to new HOA member Marion 14-13 on Friday. Ropp rushed for over 200 yards in last week’s game, and added 185 more on Friday night.
Congratulations to the Dustin Perkins and the Parsons Vikings. The Vikes snapped a 21 game losing streak tonight with a 63-20 thrashing of Iola. The Vikings last win came October 12, 2007 over Coffeyville. The Mustangs have now given up 124 points in their first two games.
Are the Hoxie Indians this year’s newcomer to 8-Man challenger? After dropping down to 8-man for the first time this season, Lance Baar’s Indians have looked good in wins over Tribune (44-18) and now Sharon Springs (44-0).
There were also a couple of wild games Friday night.
Sylvan-Lucas Luray led Lincoln 48-28 at the end of the third quarter before the Leopards rallied. Lincoln pulled within 54-52, but Sylvan would answer with a score to make it 60-52 with a minute-thirty left. Lincoln would score with just 30 seconds left, but could not convert on the two-point conversion to tie. Sylvan-Lucas Luray held on 60-58.
Andover jumped out to a commanding 34-12 lead over Newton without their star running back Ben Croitoru. But after a long weather delay, the Railers stormed back to win 49-40.
