Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Wichita Northwest evened its record at 2-2 with a 24-0 shutout of Wichita East. Freshman Braylon Scott rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown to lead the Grizzly ground game. Brekston Young threw a pair of touchdown passes – one each to Korie Murphy and Zyair Burton.
Wichita Southeast rushed for 435 yards in routing Wichita West, 62-0. Senior Kedrick Harrison carried 26 times for 322 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Jamaree Jones added 66 yards and two scores, while Mack Obar rushed for 47 yards and a score. Harrison pushed his season total to 503 yards rushing. For his career, Harrison has rushed for 2,672 yards and 20 touchdowns.
After a difficult opening schedule, Junction City picked up its first win of the season by defeating Emporia, 32-6. Khaliel Walker rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Blue Jays. Walker also passed for 163 yards in the game. The Blue Jays answered an early Emporia score with the game’s final 32 points.
Shawnee Mission East showed incredible balance in pulling away from Shawnee Mission South. The Lancer offense passed for 267 yards and rushed for 263 yards on the night. Owen Wantland completed all six of his passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns – two to Thomas Vanice which covered 142 yards and one to Chase Jehle who had 94 yards receiving. Gus Ketteler led the ground game with 119 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.
Lawrence picked up a third straight win by defeating Olathe East, 48-13. Junior quarterback Joey Dooley completed 13 of 15 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns – all three of which went to Ethan Curry who had six catches for 173 yards. Curry also rushed for 97 yards and a score on just three carries. Acein Goodman rushed for 87 yards and scored twice for the Chesty Lions.
Olathe West used a big night from Cash Warren in defeating Shawnee Mission West, 34-6. Warren rushed 16 times for 129 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Owls. Andre Day added 141 yards through the air with a touchdown going to Weston Voight. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Owls. Olathe West will play winless Olathe East this week.
Class 5A:
Topeka West outscored Shawnee Heights, 58-40, to end a streak of 13 straight losses in the series. Charger back Nas Williams-Brown carried 17 times for 328 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Sophomore Eli Hernandez added 218 passing yards and three scores – one each to Prince Lassiter, Micah Emerson, and Demauri Peoples. Lassiter had three receptions for 109 yards in the game. Trone Purvis led Shawnee Heights with 184 yards and three scores on the ground. Prior to Thursday night, Topeka High’s last win over Shawnee Heights came in 2005.
Goddard scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to edge Newton, 28-21. Quarterback Brock Sullivan accounted for three touchdowns in rushing for two scores and connecting with Erik Olivas through the air for another. Olivas led the Lion ground game with 178 yards and a score on 15 carries. Cole Kirtley passed for 101 yards and two touchdowns for Newton.
Goddard-Eisenhower rallied late to top Salina Central, 22-20. After a long weather delay, the Tigers took the lead late in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from Isaac Hegarty. Salina Central attempted a game-winning field goal with around :30 seconds remaining, but the kick was no good.
Salina South defeated Valley Center 40-12 in a weather-shortened game on Friday night. Armane Redmond rushed 31 times for 237 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars kept the focus on the ground. Izrael Telles added a rushing score and a touchdown pass to Jaxton Kitchener. Isaac Duncan passed for 227 yards and two scores for Valley Center. Spencer Crumrine caught nine for 144 yards and both of Duncan’s touchdown passes.
De Soto doubled-up KC Piper, 42-21, to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Wildcats rushed for 376 yards in the game on 52 attempts. Emerson Tjaden led De Soto with 141 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, while Will Morton added 130 yards and three scores on ten attempts. Ben Parks added more than 150 yards of total offense and two scores.
Andover exploded with 43 points in the second quarter to outscore Arkansas City, 76-42. The Trojans trailed 7-6 after the first quarter and then took a 49-28 lead into halftime. Andover outscored Ark City 27-14 in the second half. Ark City sophomore quarterback Blake Ruyle passed for 262 yards and threw six touchdown passes in the 34-point loss. Trevin Miller caught nine passes for 119 yards and three scores for the Bulldogs, while Cruz Vasquez added 129 receiving yards and two scores.
Class 4A:
Fort Scott pulled away from rival Pittsburg in the second half for a 32-21 win. Creed Clayton rushed for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Tiger offense. JaMarcus Davis rushed for all three Purple Dragon touchdowns. The victory for Fort Scott was the first in the series since 2012.
Labette County scored a late touchdown and held off KC Washington’s final scoring attempt to win, 23-20. Deontae Fields led the Grizzlies with 169 yards rushing and a touchdown on 24 attempts. Aaron Wyrick also rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Zane Garton. Washington quarterback Benito Morrell rushed for two scores in the game. Khaliel Burns-Bey led the Wildcats with 88 yards rushing, while Alvin Riley added 63 yards and a score.
Ulysses scored all 37 points in the first half of a weather-shortened shutout of Scott City. Tiger senior quarterback Caden Ledesma completed 21 of 28 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Ledesma threw two touchdown passes to Stryker Berglund and one to Jaxon Curl. Ledesma also rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the game.
Independence evened its record at 2-2 with a 56-16 win over Coffeyville. Senior Javen Colbert passed for 199 yards and four touchdowns and added 112 yards rushing with a score. Colbert connected with Joel King three times for 136 yards with all three going for touchdowns. Amare Brown also caught a touchdown pass from Colbert. Kaeson Lewis rushed for 117 yards and two scores to push his season total to 755 yards and ten touchdowns.
Winfield picked up a key AVCTL victory by outlasting Augusta, 29-21 in overtime. Viking senior Dane Chattam carried 19 times for 129 yards and a touchdown in the win. Elijah Bergesen added a rushing score and Carson Meeker threw a touchdown pass to Eli Tagg. Freshman Jett Higgins returned an Oriole fumble for a touchdown for the Viking defense.
Class 3A:
Hoisington got back in the win column with a 58-6 victory over Nickerson. Cardinal quarterback Kolter Hahn rushed for three touchdowns in the game. Parker Turner added two rushing scores for Hoisington. The Cardinals led 44-0 at halftime.
Columbus routed Parsons 69-0 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Cole Howard passed for 133 yards and four touchdowns – three of which went to Jayden Dohle who caught three passes for 79 yards. Dohle also rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown on three carries and returned a punt for a touchdown. Howard, Braun Stone, and freshman Blaze Bowman each added rushing touchdowns.
Lyons improved to 3-1 with a 15-6 win over Ellinwood. Junior Xander Young rushed 27 times for 164 yards and a touchdown. Quanick Hamilton added 91 yards passing with a scoring connection to Detrell Stanley. The Lions have now won three games in a season for the first time since 2021.
Clay Center went on the road and shut out previously unbeaten Smoky Valley, 39-0. The Tigers scored 13 points in each of the first and second quarters for a 26-0 halftime lead. Ethan Leitzel rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Clay Center offense. Sophomores Cayden Schwab and Chase Urban added rushing scores along with senior Jarrin Brumfield.
Burlington scored 49 points in the first half of a 49-0 blanking of Maranatha Academy. Thirteen Wildcats combined for 415 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Junior Shawn Mautz scored twice while Logan Turner rushed for a team-high 91 yards on seven carries with one score. Alec Stice added 88 yards and a touchdown.
Holton picked up its first win of the season by routing Atchison, 51-16. The Wildcats led 37-8 at halftime and added 14 more points in the third quarter. Holton rushed for 456 yards on the night led by Jarett Abel’s 165 yards and freshman Jerome Williams’ 136 yards. Abel rushed for three touchdowns, while Clete Wray added two touchdowns and Williams scored once.
Wichita Trinity Academy went on the road and shut out Syracuse, 42-0. The Knights were led by Camdon Kilgore’s 250 passing yards with three touchdowns. Kilgore threw two touchdown passes to Caleb Black while Mason Frieze had 157 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kipton Roberts rushed for 103 yards and two scores for Trinity.
Class 2A:
Caney Valley improved to 4-0 with an impressive 64-24 district win over Baxter Springs. The Lions were the first opponent to score on Caney Valley this season as the Bullpup defense had pitched shutouts of Eureka (58-0), Fredonia (55-0), and Humboldt (44-0) in the first three weeks. Caney held a slim 21-19 lead just before halftime when the Bullpups scored on Drake Roberds second touchdown catch of the first half to lead 29-19. Jace Buckley rushed for four touchdowns for Caney Valley, while Roberds had three TD receptions. Traxcyn Garton also rushed for a Bullpup touchdown.
Neodesha defeated Central Heights, 47-6, to remain unbeaten and set up this week’s huge Tri-Valley League showdown with Caney Valley. The Blue Streaks scored 26 points in the second quarter to pull away from the Vikings. Camryn White rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns and Dejay Schlegel added a rushing score. Tayte Leck passed for 112 yards with a touchdown pass that went to Lauklon Roebuck.
Osage City scored 37 points in the opening quarter in making quick work of West Franklin, 57-0. Reed Silver passed for 87 yards and three touchdowns – two to Layken Peterson. Sawyer Speece led the ground game with 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns on only five carries.
Marysville handed Southeast of Saline a 28-14 loss snapping the Trojan’s incredible regular-season winning streak at 51 consecutive games. The Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead early on two touchdown from quarterback Grady Sschroedl. Tiernan Ptacek then connected with Casson Klover on two touchdown passes to tie the game. Marysville would answer right back with a J.T. Becker touchdown run from midfield. The Bulldogs added a touchdown later to go up two scores. Southeast of Saline committed three turnovers on the night.
Chaparral remains unbeaten after a 28-0 shutout of Marion. Quarterback Daniel Schmidt passed for 228 yards and four touchdowns to help overcome a Roadrunner ground game that managed 62 rush yards on 19 attempts. Both of Jayden Harper’s catches went for touchdowns totaling 72 yards. Carter Hostetler led Chaparral with six catches for 124 yards and a score. Trace Hadsall also caught a touchdown pass. The Roadrunner defense intercepted Marion four times.
Class 1A:
Onaga improved to 3-1 with a 43-0 blanking of Mission Valley. The Buffaloes got a big night from junior back Luke Poell. Poell rushed 24 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns while Ryder Kolterman and Jesse Miller each added rushing scores. Kolterman also threw a pair of touchdown passes with one going to Miller and the other to Cameron Kramer.
Sacred Heart added a fourth-quarter touchdown to secure an 18-6 win over Republic County. Quarterback Maddox Wells passed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and added 83 yards on the ground. Dominic Matteucci led the Knights with 87 yards rushing while Kolin Wilson had two catches for 89 yards.
Uniontown went on the road and dampened Homecoming for Northeast-Arma with a 28-26 win. The Eagles were led by Kyson Stock who passed for 180 yards and a touchdown that went to Blake Ervin. Ervin caught five passes for 126 yards. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Stock added 85 yards rushing and senior Jace Harvey rushed for two touchdowns for the Eagles.
Olpe picked up the program’s 500th all-time victory by shutting out St. Mary’s Colgan, 29-0. Abbott Bailey broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter with a touchdown run. The Eagles took control on the next Colgan offensive snap as Drew Ritchie intercepted Panther quarterback Will Schremmer and returned it for a touchdown. Isaac Knuth then sacked Schremmer in the end zone for a 16-0 halftime lead. Ryker Windle added a third quarter score and Bailey added a late score for the final margin. Bailey rushed for 143 yards on 24 carries for the Eagles. The victory was also the 175th for Olpe’s Chris Schmidt.
Class 8-man I
Ell-Saline defeated WaKeeney-Trego, 34-14, in a road contest. Trego, the preseason No. 2 team in Eight-Man, Division I, fell to 2-2. Trego has allowed 25.5 points per game and at least 30 in three contests. The Golden Eagles had taken major graduation losses defensively from a 10-1 squad that ranked sixth in Division I scoring defense last fall at 17.6 points allowed a contest. E-S put together a key performance in all three phases. Branton Gosvener delivered the first touchdown on a six-yard run, per KSAL radio. Julian Roche posted Jaxsen Seed on a receiving score. Seed tallied a running score for a 20-0 lead. After a Trego touchdown, Gosvener scored from 10 yards out when he carried multiple players into the end zone. Seed tacked on a 57-yard TD run for a 34-6 advantage. Seed finished with 24 carries for 133 yards and two scores, along with a 22-yard reception for a touchdown.
Hoxie, expected to be much improved this season, moved to 3-1 with a 44-22 win at Oakley. The Plainsmen led 6-0 after the first quarter and the game was tied at 14 at halftime. Hoxie held a 22-8 edge in the third quarter and 8-0 in the fourth. Sophomore Gage Epp completed 13 of 21 passes for 179 yards for two touchdowns against one interception. Senior Chase Meyer recorded 25 carries for 170 yards and four scores. Junior Griffin Zerr led the receiving with four catches for 61 yards and two TDs.
Hill City moved to 3-1 with a 56-0 win against Sublette. Senior Slade Rohr had 11 rushes for 160 yards and four scores. Senior Chase Bell completed three of six passes for 29 yards and a TD.
Central Burden won a wild game, 64-58, against Cedar Vale-Dexter. Central stands at 2-2, while CVD dropped to 1-3. CVD senior Cooper Criss completed 18 of 27 passes for 315 yards with five touchdowns against one interception. Senior John Hess posted 16 carries for 110 yards and a score. Freshman Jordan Davis recorded seven catches for 129 yards and score. CVD posted more than 500 yards of total offense. Burden junior dual-threat quarterback Treighton Hafenstien had 21 carries and 180 yards and a score. Hafenstien also finished three of six passing for 89 yards with two touchdowns versus one interception. Senior Isaiah Williams recorded 14 carries for 135 yards and three TDs.
Oberlin-Decatur Community beat Atwood-Rawlins County, 52-6, and improved to 3-1. DCHS led 16-6 after the first quarter and 24-6 at halftime. Oberlin’s defense held Rawlins County to 52 plays for 163 yards.
Cair Paravel improved to 3-1 with a 54-8 win over Rural Vista. Chase Hastert threw touchdown passes to sophomore Matteo Gossard and freshman Jonas Everhart. Everhart also added 52 yards and two scores, while Gossard also scored on the ground. Cole Haubold led the Lions with 55 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.
Southeast-Cherokee celebrated Homecoming with a 67-20 win over West Elk. The Lancers led 19-6 after the first quarter and 47-12 at halftime. Senior Tyler Warner carried six times for 200 yards and four touchdowns for Southeast. Gannon Hobbs added 103 yards and two scores on 14 carries. Quarterback Solomon Scott passed for 142 yards with touchdown passes going to senior Dayton Sims and freshman Blake Sanders. Peyton Fecher and Carson Tindle rushed for touchdowns for West Elk.
Pleasanton edged Northern Heights 38-36 to improve to 2-2 on the season. The Blujays were led by junior Ryker Carpenter’s 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Carpenter also caught six passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. Brayden Hutchison threw two touchdown passes with the other going to Pryce Eastwood. Antonio Bustillos also reached the end zone for Pleasanton.
Erie evened its record at 2-2 by shutting out Udall, 50-0. The Red Devils have alternated losses and wins in their first season in the eight-man ranks. Erie is 2-0 on the road this season and winless at home. The Red Devils host Southeast-Cherokee this week.
Class 8-man II
Flinthills moved to 3-1 with a 52-6 win at Sedan. Beau Hall rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns and added two receptions for 91 yards and two scores. Quarterback Tripp Carney returned to the field and added 105 yards rushing with two scores and passed for 94 yards and two more scores. Senior Kolter Flores recorded 11 tackles and two sacks for the Mustangs.
Meade held off a second-half surge from Minneola to win 34-30. The Buffaloes led 34-14 at halftime but were shutout 16-0 by the Wildcats in the second half. Meade junior Tate Jones rushed 31 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Jones also passed for 68 yards and a score to freshman Brax Jones. Freshman Tyson Krier added 112 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Kaos Aldridge rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns for Minneola.
Norwich improved to 2-2 with a 50-6 win over St. John. The Eagles rushed for 292 yards and six touchdowns in the game. Junior Easton Schroeder led the ground game with 131 yards and four touchdowns. Marshall Eslinger added 108 yards and two touchdowns.
After multiple years of dominating six-man football, Cunningham moved back to eight-man with longtime coach Lance McGuire. The Wildcats are 4-0 and have not allowed a point. Last week, Cunningham defeated Argonia-Attica, 40-0. CHS junior Tyler Osner completed 12 of 19 passes for 111 yards with two scores against no interception. Sophomore JP Kerschen had seven carries for 91 yards and a score. Osner rushed eight times for 34 yards and two TDs. Cunningham has defeated Spearville (40-0), Norwich (28-0), and at Central Christian (46-0) before this week.
Dighton is 3-1 after a 34-0 win at Tribune-Greeley County. Dighton scored six in the first, eight in the second, eight in the third and 12 in the fourth. The Hornets held the Jackrabbits to 39 plays for 143 yards.
Thunder Ridge, expected to be improved this year, moved to 3-1. The Longhorns defeated Stockton, 68-6. Junior Rashad Stafford posted 10 carries for 180 yards and three scores. Junior Tate Foreman had nine carries for 84 yards and two TDs.
Ellis won the first game of the Dan Rogers era with a 56-20 victory at La Crosse. Ellis led 24-0 after the first quarter and 30-0 at halftime. Ellis kept La Crosse to 163 yards.
Pratt-Skyline bested previously undefeated Macksville, 26-22. Skyline senior quarterback Matt Blair had 12 of 23 passing for 219 yards with two scores against one interception. Blair finished with 18 carries for 65 yards and a score.
Osborne beat Pike Valley, 50-0, in a game that ended at halftime. Osborne sophomore quarterback Tate Tiernan completed all six passes for 62 yards and a score. He rushed twice, for three and 29 yards, and scored both times. Osborne ran 18 plays for 213 yards and six scores.
Oxford defeated South Sumner, 26-12. Oxford scored two TDs in the fourth quarter, per Sumner Newscow. Tyson Morris found Logan Gaither for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Gaither scored on a 35-yard TD run. Oxford moved to 3-1.
6-Man
Chetopa defeated Altoona-Midway for the second time in four weeks. This meeting went to the Green Hornets, 65-19. Chetopa won the season-opener 58-12. Harrison Carter rushed 10 times for 207 yards and four touchdowns in Friday’s win. Brylan Berzas also added 15 carries for 185 yards and two scores and threw a pair of touchdown passes. Carter caught a touchdown pass as did Gabriel Robison. Ethan Wulf added his seventh rushing touchdown of the season. Wulf also added six tackles and recovered a fumble.
Cheylin beat Northern Valley, 54-2. Cheylin outgained the Huskies 230-66. Landon Hendricks threw three TD passes for the Cougars, of 24, 20 and 20 yards. Andrew Wright also had a 32-yard interception return to score. Cheylin improved to 4-0.
Logan improved to 3-1 with a 59-0 win against Chase. Senior Taden Gottschalk had nine carries for 141 yards and three scores.
