Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Wichita Southeast continued its best season in recent memory with a 53-0 shutout of Wichita West. The Golden Buffaloes built a 30-0 halftime lead and rushed for more than 450 yards in the game. Kirk Harrison led the ground game with 261 yards and three scores on 28 carries. Jeno Jones added a pair of rushing scores with Tyzhiere Williams scoring once.  

Olathe North pulled off a slight upset in defeating Lawrence Free State, 35-14, in a game that was finished on Saturday due to weather on Friday night. After falling behind 14-0, the Eagles scored the game’s next 35 points. Riley Johnson passed for 106 yards and three touchdowns – two to Jayson Rush and one to Akobi Bruce. Blaise Adger led the ground game with 156 yards and two scores, while Johnson added 106 yards on eight rushers.

Manhattan routed Topeka High, 50-0. The Indians led 7-0 after the first quarter and 29-0 at halftime. Finn Watson passed for 111 yards and three scores. Kha’Mario Davis added 160 yards and three scores on 15 carries. J.J. Dunnigan caught four passes for 86 yards and three scores.

Gardner-Edgerton led 36-14 at halftime and held off Olathe South, 55-35. Senior Syre Padilla rushed 28 times for 351 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Trailblazers. Briggs Cunningham added two passing touchdowns and a rushing score for Gardner-Edgerton.


Class 5A:

After an 0-2 start, Andover has won five consecutive games and captured the AVCTL-II title with a 48-21 win over previously-unbeaten Salina Central last Thursday night. Will Quinn rushed for more than 100 yards and four touchdowns and added 120 yards passing with two scores for the Trojans. Pete Vega added also surpassed the 100-yard mark on the ground with a touchdown. Cooper Reves rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown for Salina Central, while Griffin Hall added 94 yards and a score on the ground and passed for 153 yards and a touchdown.

KC Washington overcame a strong effort by KC Schlagle to remain unbeaten. The Wildcats rushed for 493 yards in winning 49-33. Savion Stone carried 26 times for 250 yards and four touchdowns, while Cam’Ron Fields added 190 yards and two scores on 18 attempts. Alvin Riley also rushed for a score. The Wildcat defense held Schlagle to 32 rush yards on 14 attempts, but allowed Stallion quarterback Josiah Evans to pass for 387 yards and four scores. Three of Evans’ touchdowns went to Brenaj Price who caught six passes for 215 yards.    

Shawnee Heights rolled to a 42-8 United Kansas Conference win over Lansing. Aiden Scott passed for 281 yards and four touchdowns for the T-Birds. Scott connected with A.J. Gallegos 11 times for 130 yards and three scores. He also threw a touchdown pass to Dallas Owens. Lansing scored on a touchdown pass from Caden Garcia to Chase Legault.

Goddard put up nearly 450 yards of total offense in holding off Arkansas City, 44-35. The Lions were led by Erik Olivas’ 187 rush yards with a touchdown. Senior Joseph Diekemper added 64 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Brock Sullivan threw for 109 yards and a touchdown that also went to Diekemper.

Spring Hill rolled to a 43-0 shutout of Emporia. The Broncos were led on the ground by Jordan Miller and Hank Kotchavar who each rushed for 71 yards. Miller rushed for two scores and threw a touchdown pass to Maysen Dodson. Dodson, Kotchavar, and Cameron Wells each rushed for scores.  


Class 4A:

Defending-champion Andover Central improve to 4-3 with a 55-52 shootout over Goddard-Eisenohwer. The Jaguars got 193 yards rushing and four touchdowns from junior Jaxson Green. Green pushed his season total to 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns. Max Olson passed for 195 yards with touchdown passes to Noah Sawdy and Cooper Mason. Eisenhower was led by seniors Eli Ribaudo and Brayden Pappas. Pappas rushed 38 times for 263 yards and three scores, while Ribaudo passed for 291 yards and five touchdowns. Hayden Nall had 113 receiving yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers.  

Buhler led Winfield 35-0 after three quarters and eventually won 41-21. The Crusaders nearly had three 100-yard rushers on the night. Ben Clouse led the way with 122 yards, while Max Harmony added 107 yards and Hendrix Blackburn added 94 yards. Each reached the end zone once. Asher Zachary passed for 102 yards and two scores on just two completions – a 69-yard TD pass to Landon Martinez and a 33-yarder to Jacob Miller. Kellen Gibson passed for 264 yards and three scores for Winfield. Senior Evan Hutto caught five passes for 163 yards and two scores for the Vikings.

KC Piper picked up their third win of the season by defeating KC Turner, 43-7. Roman Byers rushed for 149 yards and three scores on only seven carries for the Pirates. Byers also threw a touchdown pass to Easton McCarty. Alamar Brooks’ only carry went for an 80-yard score.

Rose Hill blasted Wellington, 55-14, to improve to 4-3 on the season. The Rockets were led by Keedrin Jones who rushed for 205 yards and five touchdowns on 16 carries. Jones pushed his season total over the 1,000-yard mark with 15 rushing scores this season. Jalik Armstrong led Wellington with 113 yards rushing and a score.  


Class 3A:

Prairie View broke open a 14-14 tie by scoring 13 points in the second quarter and 22 more in the third quarter to pull away from Girard, 49-20. Senior Parker Schwarz rushed 28 times for 298 yards and five touchdowns for the Buffalos. Josh Goodwin and Wyatt Attebery each added rushing touchdowns with Attebery carrying nine times for 101 yards.

Pratt scored 35 points in the first three quarters in routing Clearwater, 42-13. The Greenback defense scored three touchdowns on interception returns for touchdowns by Gavin Rupe and Luke Gatlin and a fumble return for a score by Cresten Pore. Caleb Strong rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. Garrison Wells and Dalton Wulf rushed for touchdowns for Clearwater.

Chaparral topped Haven 48-21 in a non-district contest. The Roadrunners led 17-14 at halftime and 31-21 after three quarters before pulling away with a 17-0 fourth quarter. Junior Daniel Schmidt led Chaparral with 209 passing yards and three scores. He threw touchdown passes to Trace Hadsall, Ty Hadsall, and Kenny Diaz. Diaz also rushed for 151 yards and a score. Haven’s Cole Brawner rushed for 153 yards and three scores, while Brogan Wray passed for 261 yards on the night.

Burlington outscored Iola 20-13 in the second half to beat the Mustangs 48-38 and keep their playoff hopes alive. The Wildcats rushed for 488 yards in the contest led by senior Hunter Cole’s 343 yards and five touchdowns on 45 carries. Alex Mautz added 18 carries for 107 yards and a score and Shawn Mautz added a short scoring run. Burlington makes the playoffs with an Iola loss to Prairie View and an Anderson County win over Girard.


Class 2A:

Caney Valley picked up a third consecutive win by defeating Galena, 48-6.  The Bullpups and Riverton are each 3-0 and will decide the District 1 championship at their meeting in Riverton this week. Caney’s lone loss came to Christ Prep Academy, 41-8, back in Week 4.

Russell held off Minneapolis, 37-36, in overtime in a key District 7 road contest. Minneapolis held an 18-15 lead. Then, Walker Middleton scored just before the end of the third quarter on an 18-yard run, per KRSL radio. Russell led 23-18 entering the fourth quarter. Then, Minneapolis had a drive that ended in three straight stalled attempts at the one-yard line. Russell went 99 yards and scored on an eight-yard run from Middleton for a 30-18 lead. Minneapolis scored twice more and tied the game with 1:23 left in regulation. Minneapolis missed the extra point. In overtime, Minneapolis scored first, though again couldn’t convert the extra point. Trey Zorn scored on a quarterback run before Alex Krug ended the game with a walk-off extra point. Russell, off to its best start in 25 years, moved to 6-1.

Eureka moved to 6-1, 4-0 in District 2 and continued its best season in 20-plus years. The Tornadoes beat Central Heights, 46-20. After a scoreless first quarter, Eureka led 22-6 at halftime. Senior quarterback Peyton Hare rushed 13 times for 111 yards and two scores. Senior Justin Andrews delivered 24 carries for 185 yards and four touchdowns.

Cherryvale improved to 4-3 with a 42-18, non-district victory over Leon-Bluestem. The Chargers scored 20 points in the opening quarter and led 29-12 at halftime. Wyatt Duncan passed for 199 yards and two scores for the Chargers. Zeke Thompson caught three passes for 127 yards and two scores. Bluestem’s touchdowns came on a Ayson Shepherd touchdown pass to Hunter Thompson and rushing scores from Logan Squier and Axton Vice. Cherryvale can clinch a the 3-seed from District 1 with a victory at Fredonia this week.

Cimarron improved to 3-0 in district play with a 40-14 win over Southwestern Heights. The Bluejays have clinched a home playoff spot and will play Hoisington for a district championship this week. Cade Sonday passed for 310 yards and two scores for Cimarron. Isaac Hernandez added 78 yards rushing with three scores.

Hillsboro scored in each quarter in topping Lyons, 48-21. The Trojans scored 34 points in the first half as Jesiah Gooch rushed for four of his six touchdowns on the night. Zayne Haslett kicked off the scoring for Hillsboro with an early 76-yard touchdown run.


Class 1A:

Thomas More Prep-Marian moved to 4-2 and set up a key home district showdown with Plainville this Friday. TMP rolled to a 52-0 road win versus winless Syracuse. Jackson Gillespie enjoyed another 100-yard rushing performance with 13 carries for 118 yards and three scores, per Hays Post. Carson Liles threw for 127 yards and a score. TMP is 4-2, 2-1 in District 8.

Conway Springs defeated Ellinwood, 17-14, in double overtime on a game-winning field goal. Conway Springs rushed 50 times for 251 yards and two scores. Ellinwood rushed 48 times for 220 yards and two scores. Senior Logan Osner rushed 27 times for 175 yards and two TDs. Conway Springs is 2-5, 1-3 in District 7. Ellinwood moved to 4-3, 1-3.

Republic County improved to 6-1 on the season with a quality 36-11 win over Valley Heights. The Buffaloes scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. Kash Henke rushed for 119 yards on 17 carries to lead the Buffs. Henke also passed for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Aden Morris caught a pair of touchdown passes and Connor Martin caught another scoring pass. Nickholas Kendall scored twice on the ground for Republic County.


Class 8-man I

Cedar Vale-Dexter held off Oswego, 88-86, in a wild eight-man District 1 championship contest. Oswego sophomore Demitri Williamson had 20 carries for 327 yards with seven touchdowns. Williamson scored 10 total touchdowns in four different ways. Oswego posted 496 rushing yards and nine scores. For Cedar Vale-Dexter, junior Cooper Criss completed 18 of 25 passing for 154 yards with three touchdowns against no interceptions. Senior Royce Potter delivered 25 carries for 193 yards and six touchdowns. Criss had 19 carries for 123 yards and two TDs. The teams had two lead changes in the final 70 seconds. Oswego led 56-42 in the third quarter, per the Wichita Eagle. Then, Cedar Vale-Dexter scored 30 straight points. The game went back and forth before a five-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left. Oswego moved to the Spartan 10-yard line, but Williamson was tackled just short of the goal line on the final play.

Ellis held off Ness City, 58-8. Ellis led 22-0 after the first quarter and 52-8 at halftime. Junior Baylor Born completed 11 of 12 passes for 101 yards with five scores against no interceptions. Senior Carson Schartz rushed 10 times for 113 yards and two TDs. Senior Braddix Bozarth had 20 carries for 168 yards and two scores.

St. Francis held off rival Hoxie, 24-20. Hoxie led 6-0 after the first quarter. The game was tied at six at halftime and 12 after three quarters. St. Francis outscored Hoxie, 12-8, in the fourth quarter. St. Francis sophomore Zylas Martinez completed 12 of 22 passes for 155 yards with three scores against no interceptions. Senior Layn Todd rushed 15 times for 109 yards. He also completed four of seven passes for 59 yards with a score and an interception. Hoxie had no yards from seniors. Freshman Gage Epp completed nine of 14 passes for 116 yards with no touchdowns against one interception. Sainty outgained Hoxie, 367-251.

Leoti-Wichita County routed Quinter, 50-0, on Friday night. Cashton Young rushed 22 times for 323 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Indian offense.

Oxford stayed unbeaten ahead of their showdown with No. 1 South Central. The Wildcats routed Udall, 65-6, behind nine rushing touchdowns. Junior Logan Gaither rushed five times for 149 yards and three scores. Kegan Kelly and Xzavier McClamy each rushed for two touchdowns, while Chase Douglas and Kale Moberly each scored once.


Class 8-man II

Linn defeated Osborne, 54-36, to win the District 4 championship. Osborne freshman Tate Tiernan continued his big season with 24 of 38 passing for 276 yards with four scores. He also rushed 16 times for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns. All of Osborne’s rushing, passing and receiving yards came from freshmen and sophomores.

Thunder Ridge defeated Pike Valley, 50-0. Thunder Ridge scored 30 points in the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Sophomore Tate Foreman continued his big season with 12 of 14 passing for 191 yards with three scores against one interception. Sophomore Rashad Stafford had nine carries for 124 yards and two scores.

Frankfort scored 58 points in the first half in routing Wakefield, 58-12. Wes Anderson passed for 218 yards and four touchdowns and added 83 yards and two scores on the ground. Anderson threw touchdown passes to Peyton Adams, Kale Koch, and porter Colvin. Adams caught four passes for 104 yards and two scores. Henry Ketter added two rushing scores for the Wildcats.

Marmaton Valley blanked Colony-Crest, 56-0. Tyler Lord and Cooper Scharff each rushed for more than 100 yards and scored multiple touchdowns. Lord carried four times for 107 yards and three scores, while Scharff rushed four times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Lord also threw a touchdown pass to Scharff.

Fairfield picked up a second consecutive victory as the Falcons routed Norwich, 52-6. Senior Brodie Snodgrass rushed 27 times for 247 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Falcon offense. Gage Brown added 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground.


6-Man

Golden Plains defeated Western Plains, 52-6. Freshman Ruxin Arnberger completed three of four passes for 32 yards. Senior Dylan Wark rushed three times for 61 yards, all for scores. GP ran 14 plays for 186 yards.


Non-KSHSAA

Reno County Homeschool defeated Burlingame, 52-14 on Friday night. The Sabres led 44-14 at halftime and scored early in the third quarter before the game was called due to lightning. Bo Smith passed for 97 yards and two touchdowns and added 117 rushing yards with four scores.
