Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Wichita Southeast improved to 4-2 with a 21-10 victory over Garden City. The Golden Buffaloes rushed for 236 yards on the night led by Kedrick Harrison’s 143 yards on 27 carries. Harrison and Mack Obar each rushed for touchdowns, while Obar also tossed a touchdown pass to Will Obar.
Olathe Northwest scored in each quarter in rolling to a 43-7 win over Shawnee Mission West. The Ravens led 26-0 at halftime and 40-0 after three quarters. Northwest kept things on the ground with 342 rushing yards. Michael Hefley rushed for 115 yards and a score on just six carries. Jaelen Douglass added 94 yards and a score on nine carries. Bryce Randall and Daniel Skoczek each added rushing scores. Vincent Allen scored the lone touchdown for the Vikings.
Shawnee Mission East scored five touchdowns in the first half in running past Shawnee Mission North, 49-21. Senior quarterback Jack Reeves rushed ten times for 216 yards and four touchdowns for the Lancers. Reeves has now rushed for 1,237 yards and 19 touchdowns this season and is closing in on 3,000 career rushing yards. Thomas Vanice added 131 yards and a score on just four carries. Reeves and Vince Kopp each threw touchdown passes with Vanice and Quentin Ochs each catching one.
Shawnee Mission Northwest evened its record at 3-3 with a 26-7 win over Lawrence. The Cougars led 14-7 at halftime as Trai Woodruff provided the difference with a rushing score. Woodruff then added a pair of second-half touchdown passes to Brandon Brown as the Cougars pulled away. Tahj Edwards led Lawrence with 123 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Jaxon Becker caught five passes for 111 yards for the Lions. Becker surpassed 100 career receptions in the game.
Wichita South got a second-half touchdown from Rashawn Johnson and made it stand up in an 8-7 victory over Wichita Heights. Johnson rushed for 161 yards on 22 attempts to lead the Titans. Heights scored on a Zane Masterson touchdown pass to Chaylen Bodney.
Class 5A:
Salina Central remained unbeaten by grinding past defending 4A champion Andover Central, 23-13. The Mustangs rushed for 345 yards in the game led by senior Cooper Reves’ 203 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Reves pushed his season total to 1,261 yards and 11 touchdowns and is among the state’s leaders. Quarterback Griffin Hall added 142 yards and a score on the ground and passed for 118 yards and a touchdown that went to Gannon Cole. Jaxson Green rushed for 179 yards and a score for Andover Central.
KC Washington cruised to a 70-0 win over KC Wyandotte. The Wildcats scored 37 points in the first quarter and led 57-0 at halftime. Savion Stone passed for 337 yards and four touchdowns and added 83 yards on the ground with three scores. Sophomore Khaliel Burns-Bey added 131 yards rushing with a touchdown on nine carries. Cam’Ron Fields caught six passes for 129 yards and two scores and Jamari Williams added 110 yards and two scores.
Blue Valley improved to 3-3 on the season with a 30-14 win over Blue Valley Northwest. The Tigers got the scoring started with an 80-yard TD pass from Dan Sogard to Jacob Lockett. The Tiger defense produced a safety by Acy Vanrheen and a pick-six by Miller Simpson to lead 16-7 after three quarters. The Huskies pulled within 16-14 as Ethan O’Hara tossed a TD pass to Baren Marshall, but Blue Valley answered right back with a 53-yard bomb from Sogard to Jordan Lockett.
Goddard slipped by Salina South, 34-27, to post a third consecutive win. The Lions were led by strong rushing performances from Erik Olivas and Brock Sullivan. Olivas carries 24 times for 157 yards and two scores, while Sullivan added 126 yards and two scores. Sullivan also tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Olivas.
Goddard-Eisenhower picked up its second win of the season by defeating Arkansas City, 49-21. Senior Brayden Pappas rushed 29 times for 382 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Eli Ribaudo added 180 yards passing with two touchdown passes going to Hayden Nall. Nall had six receptions for 104 yards.
Leavenworth picked up a fifth consecutive win by defeating De Soto, 27-14, at De Soto. It was the Pioneers first win over De Soto in school history. Leavenworth clinged to a one-score lead late when Trey Brockington hauled in an interception off of a batted De Soto pass and returned it for a touchdown and a two-score lead. Dy’Vair McCray had a pair of touchdown receptions from Brayden Bridger as part of his 100-yard receiving night.
Class 4A:
KC Piper snapped a four-game losing streak with a 44-13 win over Lansing. Roman Byers rushed 14 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Pirates. Leeum Healy also tossed a touchdown pass to Byers to complete the Byers’ five touchdown night.
Buhler rolled to a 63-6 win over struggling El Dorado. The Crusaders scored 56 points in the first half. Ben Clouse rushed for 56 yards and four touchdowns on seven carries. Asher Zachary completed 7 of 8 passes for 168 yards and three scores – one each going to Landon Martinez, Garrett Gleason, and Jacob Miller. El Dorado scored its first points of the season on a touchdown run by junior Daniel Bowlin.
Labette County improved to 5-1 with a 51-0 shutout of Coffeyville-Field Kindley. The Grizzlies scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to lead 43-0 at the break. Deontae Fields rushed for 143 yards and three scores for Labette County. Kegan Bates added a pair of rushing scores and Aaron Wyrick added a touchdown pass to Bates.
Rose Hill improved to 3-3 with a 42-12 win over Towanda-Circle. The Rockets were led by senior Keedrin Jones who rushed for 313 yards and five touchdowns on 20 attempts. Circle sophomore Jason Smith had a strong game with 131 yards and a scores on 14 carries.
Class 3A:
Hesston won a shootout over Wichita Trinity, 66-34. Jerick Humphreys passed for 250 yards and three touchdowns, each of which went to Daxon Deering. Deering caught five passes for 161 yards. Blayne Wilson led the Swather rushing attack with 200 yards and three score on 18 carries. Wilson also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Trinity Academy was led by Zac Zimmerman’s 281 passing yards with three touchdowns. Bryton Baty caught two scoring passes and Yamnoel Oyaola caught one to go along with his two rushing touchdowns.
Parsons used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 27-6 win over Neodesha. Senior Chandler Hentzen rushed 28 times for 187 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Vikings. Dekaryi Jones added Parsons’ fourth touchdown run. The Parsons defense intercepted four Neodesha passes and forced five total turnovers. Hentzen had two picks and a fumble recovery, while Aundre Ford and Jakarre Green each had interceptions.
Prairie View scored 43 points in the first half in rolling to a 49-8 win over Anderson County. Parker Schwarz carried 20 times for 326 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Buffaloes. Classmate Josh Goodwin added 111 yards and a scores on just eight attempts.
Hiawatha snaped a three-game losing streak with a 56-13 win over Oskaloosa. The Red Hawks rushed for 421 yards on the night with Ethan Morton rushing for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Fellow senior Karson Henry added 164 yards and three scores on the ground.
Pratt outscored Phillipsburg, 62-34, in a non-district contest. The Greenbacks put up 600 yards of total offense with 301 rushing and 299 passing. Cresten Pore rushed for 104 yards and two scores, while Cade Liggett added 85 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Strong rushed four times for 95 yards. Pore also passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns, while Liggett and Strong each threw touchdown passes. Arley Morrell caught nine passes for 173 yards and four touchdowns.
Class 2A:
Haven scored 36 points in the first quarter in rolling to a 45-6 victory over Belle Plaine. The Wildcats rebounded from their 1-point loss to Garden Plain to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Larned held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter, but Southwestern Heights came back for a 29-20 victory. SWH outscored Larned, 22-8, in the second quarter, and 7-6 in the third quarter. Southwestern Heights senior quarterback Omar Mercado completed eight of 15 passes for 143 yards with two scores against one interception. SWH finished with 28 carries for 70 rushing yards and two scores – both by Mercado. Larned is 0-6, and SWH is 2-4.
Council Grove rolled to a 55-8 win against Central Heights and improved to 5-1. The Braves outgained Central Heights 471-26. Luke Stewart had a big game with eight of 16 passing for 164 yards with four scores against zero interceptions. Blaise French posted 12 carries for 139 yards and a score. Mason Samuels had three catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Hutchinson delivered five pancake blocks on offense and 3.5 tackles for loss on defense.
Ellsworth shook off last week’s loss to Hillsboro by handling Halstead, 42-14. Tucker Goss carried 25 times for 111 yards and four touchdowns for the Bearcats. Jackson Minear added 105 yards and a score on seven attempts, while Carson Jacobs rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Silver Lake rolled to a 42-8 district-win over Riley County. The Eagles were led by freshman quarterback Kipton Kruger who passed for 227 yards and three scores. Kruger threw touchdown passes to Dayne Johnson, Grady Bergmann, and Owen Rottinghaus. Bryson Burgos added 159 rushing yards and two scores on 13 attempts.
Humboldt scored in each quarter in defeating Leon-Bluestem, 28-6. Senior Mason Sterling rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, threw a touchdown pass, and caught a touchdown pass from Gavin Gunderman. Bluestem was led by Axton Vice’s 170 yards rushing on 25 attempts.
Class 1A:
Thomas More Prep-Marian broke 50 points for the second time this year in a 52-21 against Oakley. The Monarchs moved to 3-2, 1-1 in District 8. The teams combined for 27 plays on its first two drives, per Hays Post, and both missed field goals. However, the Monarchs had a strip sack and recovered a fumble en route to a fourth down touchdown run by Carson Liles. He eventually threw for 190 yards and a score. Grant Nehls cleared 100 receiving yards, and Jackson Gillespie went over 100 rushing yards.
Plainville rolled over Syracuse, 69-18. Plainville led 36-0 in the first quarter and 53-0 at halftime. Draden Puckett opened the scoring with a 58-yard rushing touchdown. After an interception, Puckett continued the scoring with a five-yard rushing
Pleasanton got a key district win over Southeast-Cherokee, 41-6. The Blu-Jay defense limited the Lancer run game to 135 yards on 33 carries, recovered three fumbles, and forced four total turnovers. Pleasanton also held the Southeast offense out of the end zone as the Lancers score came on a kickoff return by Tyler Warner. Pleasanton moved to 1-2 in district play, while Southeast fell to 2-1.
Republic County improved to 5-1 with a 22-0 shutout of Whitewater-Remington. The Buffs got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Nickolas Kendall and one from Levi White.
Uniontown improved to 3-3 with a 39-6 victory over Erie. Senior Gaige Lape rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Colter Powell added 101 yards and three scores, while Hunter Johnson also added a rushing score. The Eagles have a key district game against Pleasanton this week.
Class 8-man I
Oswego beat Northeast-Arma, 74-28. Oswego led 16-14 after the first quarter and moved to a 50-28 advantage at halftime. Senior Corey Shepard posted 13 carries for 143 yards and three scores. Sophomore Demetri Williamson continued his best year with 10 carries for 164 yards and two scores. Oswego posted 44 plays for 549 yards, including 462 on the ground. The Indians achieved another winning season under Matt Fowler, moved to 5-1 and won its fifth straight game. Oswego has six winning seasons in eight years under Fowler. Before then, Oswego had five straight non-winning records.
Lincoln remained undefeated and just outside the top-five rankings with a 64-6 victory versus Lakeside-Downs. Lincoln led a 20-6 after the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Lincoln held Lakeside to 22 carries for 39 yards.
Atwood-Rawlins County beat St. Francis, 28-24, and won the Yoke Bowl in one of the state’s most storied rivalries. Rawlins County led 6-0 after the first quarter and 12-0 at halftime. After an 8-8 third quarter, Sainty outscored Rawlins County, 16-8, in the fourth quarter. Atwood sophomore Dominique Paz collected 27 carries for 204 yards and a score. Paz completed three of seven passes for 23 yards, all for scores. St. Francis senior Layn Todd had 21 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
Hill City rolled to a 64-14 victory over defending-champion Hoxie. The Ringnecks got three rushing touchdowns from Tyler Ashbaugh and two more from Ryan Budig. Tate Balthazor threw touchdown passes to Slade Rohr and Vincent Zohner. Hoxie scored on a Gage Epp touchdown pass to Chase Meyer and a kickoff return by Meyer.
Class 8-man II
Thunder Ridge scored the most points in Kansas high school football from 6A to Eight-Man, Division II with a 76-48 win against Beloit St. John’s-Tipton. Thunder Ridge led 26-14 after the first quarter and 56-26 at halftime. Sophomore Tate Foreman posted a huge game with 11 of 17 passing for 252 yards and four scores. He rushed 30 times for 180 yards. Plus, sophomore Rashad Stafford has 14 carries for 114 yards and three touchdowns. BSJT had two quarterbacks, senior Edward Horinek and sophomore Brooks Dunstan, who combined for 18 of 31 passing for 260 yards and four scores.
Rural Vista improved to 5-1 with a 48-0 shutout of Lebo. The Heat was led by senior Kole Riedy’s 258 rushing yards on 17 carries. Riedy scored four touchdowns on the ground. Koden Sanford and Celian Van Bemtlen each added rushing scores.
Marmaton Valley rolled to a 54-6 win over Waverly. The Wildcats scored 46 points in the first quarter. Tyler Lord passed for 200 yards and four touchdowns – two each going to Todd Stevenson and Cooper Scharff. Stevenson had 134 receiving yards. Lord also added two rushing scores. Scharff rushed for a team-high 74 yards and ran for a score.
6-Man
Northern Valley beat Triplains-Brewster, 74-6, in a game called at halftime. NV scored 55 points in the first quarter. For the 55 points, the Huskies ran eight offensive plays and scored six touchdowns. Gavin Thalheim passed for five touchdowns. Owen Hammond collected 112 yards with four offensive TDs and one defensive score.
Non-KSHSAA
Reno County Homeschool held off Class 2A Douglass, 46-16. It marked Reno County’s first 11-man game this season. RC led 16-0 after the first quarter and 40-8 at halftime. Reno County rushed for 200 yards and passed for 258. Junior quarterback Bo Smith completed 19 of 26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He also posted 18 carries for 115 yards and two TDs. Freshman Colt Smith had four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
