Around the Classes - Week 4 recap

Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Olathe West improved to 3-1 with a 42-24 win over Shawnee Mission North. The Owls were led by senior quarterback Brody Hale’s 213 passing yards with three touchdowns. Hale threw two touchdown passes to Sam Krzykowski and one to Josh Foland. Foland also led the ground game with 142 yards and a score on eight carries.

Shawnee Mission East built a 28-14 halftime lead, then had to withstand a furious second-half comeback by Olathe South to win, 49-35. The Falcons actually rallied to take a 35-34 lead early in the fourth quarter before East’s Jack Reeves broke an 80-yard touchdown run and the two-point conversion put the Lancers up 42-35. Reeves rushed 28 times for 296 yards and six touchdowns and added 70 passing yards and a score.

Blue Valley West picked up its first win of the season by defeating Blue Valley North, 31-7. Quarterback Brett LaDuke passed for 221 yards and three touchdowns for the Jaguars. Jett Nagy had four catches for 100 yards, while Trent Schneider added two catches for 82 yards.

Wichita Southeast improved to 3-1 with a 35-14 win over Wichita Heights. The Buffaloes rushed for 355 yards in the game led by Kedrick Harrison’s 232 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. For the season, Harrison has carried 91 times for 598 yards and three scores. Mack Obar added 86 yards on the ground with a touchdown and 143 yards passing with two touchdowns. Both touchdown passes went to Will Obar. The Golden Buffaloes have a winning record four weeks into the season for the first time since a 4-0 start in 2008. They also have the program’s most wins in a season since winning three games back in 2019.

Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Olathe Northwest scored 21-points in third quarter take the lead and top Shawnee Mission Northwest, 31-28. The Ravens picked up a third consecutive win to stay in touch with the top of the 6A East district standings. It was the second consecutive week that Olathe Northwest scored 21 points in the third quarter. The week prior, the Ravens used a 21-point 3Q to pull away from Lawrence.

 

Class 5A:

Basehor-Linwood took control of the United Kansas Conference race with a wild 42-38 win at De Soto. The Bobcats built a 21-7 lead before De Soto rallied to tie the game. Carson Dixon’s third touchdown pass to Nash Morrison gave Basehor-Linwood a 35-24 lead after three quarters. De Soto scored consecutive touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take a 38-35 lead, but Dixon connected with Morrison for a 4th touchdown pass with :13 second left to pull out the win. Dixon passed for 304 yards and the four touchdown passes that went to Morrison. Morrison caught eight passes for 154 yards. Dixon also rushed for 124 yards and a score. Will Morton led De Soto with a school-record 271 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  

Kc Washington rolled to a 49-26 win over KC Central (Mo.) on Saturday. Quarterback Savion Stone passed for 326 yards and five touchdowns to push his season total to 1,061 yards and 14 touchdowns. Stone also rushed for 140 yards and a score giving him 519 yards and seven scores through four weeks. Cam’Ron Fields added seven catches for 196 yards and two scores, while Darreon Baskni had five catches for 104 yards and three scores. Khaliel Burns-Bey rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Fields added 77 yards and a score on the ground.

Bishop Carroll outscored Wichita South 27-0 in the second quarter to build a 41-6 lead en route to a 47-20 victory. The Eagles forced three Titan turnovers on the night in evening their record at 2-2. Wichita South’s Rashawn Johnson was limited to 58 yards rushing on 12 attempts. Johnson entered the contest averaging nearly 110 yards per game on the ground.

Goddard showed great balance in a 36-17 win over Newton. The Lions rushed for 205 yards and passed for 195 in the victory. Erik Olivas led the ground game with 152 yards and two scores. Brock Sullivan passed for 195 yards and three scores – two of which went to Olivas who caught three passes for 102 yards. Sullivan’s other TD pass went to Erv Manuel Phillips.  

Spring Hill scored two touchdowns in teach of the first three quarters in beating KC Piper, 49-21. The Broncos rushed for 346 yards on the night led by Jordan Miller’s 148 yards and two scores. Hank Kotchavar added 124 yards and a touchdown. Miller also passed for 116 yards and two scores which went to Cameron Wells. The Broncos forced four Piper turnovers on the night.

Pittsburg outscored Fort Scott 13-0 in the second half to win the rivalry game, 22-15. Malcoln Riley rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Purple Dragons. Jamarcus Davis added a team-high 50 rush yards and a score.

Class 4A:

Andover Central scored in each quarter to defeat Valley Center, 27-16. Junior Jaxson Green carried 28 times for 299 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars. Max Olson added a pair of rushing scores and passed for 80 yards. Preston Looney and Rylan Bailey each rushed for touchdowns for Valley Center.

Lansing scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to rally past Topeka West, 36-20, on Thursday night. Jaxon Pollard rushed 37 times for 196 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Lions. Caden Garcia passed for 182 yards and a touchdown that went to Chase Legault. Nasir’e Williams-Brown led Topeka West with a touchdown rushing and receiving.

Wellington scored late to top Labette County, 25-14. The Crusaders scored all 25 of their points in the final 15 minutes of game time after trailing 7-0 for much of the night. Colton Elmore threw touchdown passes to Jackson Curry and Emerson Brownlee and added a pair of rushing touchdowns of his own. Elmore passed for 190 yards and added 89 yards on the ground. The Crusader defense held Labette County to 54 rush yards on 32 attempts, but the Grizzlies passed for 286 yards on the night.

McPherson scored in each quarter in racing past Winfield, 46-27. Bullpup junior Ashton Malm returned a kickoff for a touchdown and had eight receptions for 270 yards and two more scores. The McPherson defense limited Winfield to 57 rush yards on 25 carries. Winfield quarterback Kellan Gibson passed for 345 yards and two scores in the loss. Evan Hutto caught nine passes for 275 yards and a score for the Vikings.


Class 3A:

Hesston improved to 3-1 with a 55-12 rout of Nickerson. Swather quarterback Jerick Humphreys completed all 11 of his pass attempts for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Humphreys threw touchdown passes to Gavin Larson and Kason Landes. Humphreys also rushed for a pair of scores.  Senior Blayne Wilson added 163 yards and two scores on the ground for Hesston.

Pratt looked impressive in a 35-0 shutout of previously-unbeaten Chaparral. The Greenbacks scored twice in each of the first two quarters in building a 28-0 halftime lead. Cade Liggett rushed for 152 yards and two scores. Creston Pore threw touchdown passes to Caleb Strong and Gavin Rupe.  

Parsons pulled away from Baxter Springs with a 14-0 second half to win 34-14. Viking senior Chandler Hentzen rushed 32 times for 416 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Hentzen also caught two passes for 46 yards and a score. Hentzen accounted for 462 of the Vikings’ 487 yards of total offense.

Holton improved to 3-1 with a 40-10 victory over Perry-Lecompton. The Wildcats led 16-10 at halftime before breaking the game open with a 24-0 second half. Holton had three players rush for more than 100 yards on the night. Senior Korban Wilson led the team with 157 yards and a touchdown, while classmates Andrew Shupe and Alex Frazier added 124 yards and 101 yards, respectively. Five different Wildcats rushed for touchdowns as the team put up more than 500 rushing yards.

Jefferson West improved to 3-1 with a 12-7 victory over Hiawatha. The Tigers freshman quarterback Brixton Schwinn passed for 229 yards including a touchdown pass to Crayton Holman. Holman caught ten passes for 183 yards on the night. Hiawatha was led by Ethyn Grant’s 83 rush yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Wichita Trinity Academy picked up its second win by defeating Smoky Valley, 36-16. Junior quarterback Zac Zimmerman passed for 201 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing score. Zimmerman threw two touchdown passes to Bryton Baty and one to Yamnoel Oyola. Baty caught five passes for 107 yards. Smoky Valley was led by senior Jack Opat’s 126 rush yards with a touchdown.

Neodesha opened district play with a 20-7 win over Columbus. Sophomore Tayte Leck passed for 229 yards and three touchdowns for the Blue Streaks. Camryn White, Cole Ramey, and Jayedin Huckabey each caught touchdown passes from Leck. Columbus scored on a touchdown reception by sophomore Jonas Stover, while freshman Jayden Dohle totaled 146 return yards on the night.

Class 2A:


Haven remained unbeaten with a 31-20 victory over Douglass. The Wildcats were led by Cole Brawner’s 204-yard rushing night against the Bulldogs. Brogan Wray added 129 yards passing including a touchdown pass to Zade Turner. Haven has a big test on the road at No. 5 Garden Plain this week.  

Ellsworth rolled to a 50-3 victory over Lyons. The Bearcats led 20-3 at halftime before pulling away with a 30-0 second half. Senior Tucker Goss rushed 29 times for 303 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bearcats. Jackson Minear, Carson Jacobs, and Gage Laas each added touchdown runs. Jacobs also threw a touchdown pass to Cooper McGowan.

The Riverton Rams picked up their first win of the season in defeating Cherryvale, 37-27. The Rams led 24-0 at halftime behind touchdown runs by Aydin Witherspoon and Noah Parker. Riley Greer also returned an interception for a score. Bo Crowder and Tyler Reitz each rushed for touchdowns in the second half. Parker led the Rams with 149 yards on the ground.

Cimarron won for a second consecutive week as the Bluejays topped Lakin, 31-7. McCoy Nash rushed 20 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cimarron. Cade Sonday threw a touchdown pass Isayah Barranca for the Bluejays’ other score.

Eureka built a 26-0 halftime lead in topping Humboldt, 34-6. Senior Peyton Hare rushed for a touchdown and threw touchdown passes to Cole Ptacek and T. J. Mills. Christian Andrews led the Eureka ground game with 108 yards and a score on nine carries.


Class 1A:

Marion remained unbeaten with a 42-8 win over Sedgwick. Jameson Looper rushed for 213 yards and scored three times in the win. Carson Krause added a pair of touchdowns for the Warriors. Marion will take on Inman this week in a key district game.

Hutchinson Trinity picked up a third consecutive win by defeating South Sumner County, 48-7. Drew Dechant passed for 145 yards and three scores and added 150 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Celtics will host two-time defending champion Conway Springs this week.  

Republic County scored 22 points in the first and second quarters in routing Bennington, 50-0. The Buffaloes were led on the ground by junior Nickolas Kendall’s 104 yards and two touchdowns on just ten carries. Kash Henke added a touchdown rushing and threw two touchdown passes on the night. Grady Siemsen, Connor Martin and Parker Alexander each caught touchdown passes.

Southeast-Cherokee opened district play with a 40-18 road-win at Uniontown. The Lancers trailed 18-14 at halftime, but then broke the game open with a 20-point third quarter. Senior Cayne Windsor rushed 21 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southeast. Gannon Hobbs and Tyler Warner each added rushing scores, while Warner caught a touchdown pass from Solomon Scott. Colter Powell led Uniontown with two rushing scores and a passing touchdown.

Onaga pulled away from Valley Falls with a 12-0 second half to win 32-6. Freshman Ryder Kolterman led the Buffaloes with 121 rush yards and a touchdown. Gavin Kolterman added two rushing scores, while Graham Valburg and Joshua Daniels also reached the end zone. Grant Meyer tossed a touchdown pass to Duncan Alvarenga for Valley Falls’ lone touchdown.  

 

Medicine Lodge won at Conway Springs, 28-13. The game was tied at seven after the first quarter. ML held a 14-7 lead at halftime and again following the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Medicine Lodge had a 14-6 advantage. Senior Jack Schreiner rushed 12 times for 132 yards, including a 93-yarder, and a pair of scores. The Indians held Conway Springs, the two-time defending state champion, to 51 carries for 174 yards and a score. Medicine Lodge had lost 13 straight to Conway Springs dating back to 2006.

Class 8-man I

Flinthills improved to 3-1 with a 58-14 district win over Northern Heights. The Mustangs scored two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter to take control. Beau Hall accounted for six total touchdowns on the night for Flinthills. Hall rushed for five touchdowns and returned an interception for another score. Tripp Carney rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to Ty Finley. Cooper Woodrow rushed for both Northern Heights’ scores. 4

Ellis earned its first win of the season with a comeback victory against La Crosse, 44-32. Ellis (1-3) trailed 12-0 early and then was up by 12 at halftime. Sophomore quarterback Trenton Schartz completed eight of 34 passes for 150 yards with two scores against three interceptions. He delivered 28 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Byers finished with six catches for 108 yards and a pair of scores. Seniors Carson Schartz and Brody Fischer each delivered 21 tackles and combined for seven tackles for loss.

Oswego rolled over West Elk, 49-0, and won its third consecutive contest. Oswego tallied 30 points in the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Sophomore Demitri Williamson continued his strong season with seven catches for 159 yards and three scores. Oswego rushed for minus-2 yards.

Hoxie defeated Stockton, 60-14. Freshman Porter Meyer delivered 16 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Noah Nickelson finished with nine carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Mat Bretz finished with six carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns.

Kinsley dominated Elkhart, 70-20. The Coyotes led 24-12 after the first quarter and 48-20 at halftime. Junior Woodrow Lancaster had a huge game with 12 carries for 222 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore Josh Stuckey had 18 carries for 138 yards and a score. Kinsley remains undefeated at 3-0.

Hill City beat Rawlins County, 58-20. Senior quarterback Tate Balthazor completed seven of nine passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed 11 times for 167 yards and three TDs. Senior Tyler Ashbaugh responded with 16 carries for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Class 8-man II

Beloit-St. John’s/Tipton Catholic beat Osborne, 58-24, in a key district contest. Osborne led 12-6 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime. For BSJT, sophomore Brooks Dunstan completed 10 of 20 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Edward Horinek finished with eight carries for 116 yards and two scores.

Burlingame rolled over Centre, 48-0. Senior Danny Cain completed eight of 11 passes for 164 yards and three scores against one interception. The Bearcats are 3-1, 1-0 in District 2. Sophomore Jude Aguilar rushed four times for 16 yards and two TDs.

Argonia-Attica beat Norwich, 30-6. The Titans led 14-0 after the first quarter and 22-0 at halftime. Junior Maddex Hemberger completed seven of nine passes for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns. A-A is 3-1, 1-0 in District 5.

 

 


6-Man

 

Rexford-Golden Plains rolled over Triplains-Brewster, 49-0. Senior Dylan Wark had six carries for 102 yards and three scores. Golden Plains ran 23 plays for 186 yards.

Peabody-Burns defeated Pawnee Heights, 58-26. Junior Aiden Hurst, a three-year starter, finished with 12 of 22 passing for 193 yards and four touchdowns. He finished with 10 carries for 123 yards and two scores. Junior Dalton Philpott delivered 12 carries for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior Jameson Miles hauled in two catches, for 16 and 27 yards, bot for scores.


Non-KSHSAA

 

Reno County Homeschool had a wild game with Eight-Man, Division II’s Marmaton Valley. RC won 93-38 in a game ended at halftime. Reno County led 32-0 in the first eight minutes and was up 56-22 after the first quarter. Both teams entered undefeated. Junior Bo Smith finished five of nine passing for 107 yards and three scores against no interceptions. Reno County finished with 32 offensive plays for 374 plays for 11.7 yards per play. Smith rushed 13 times for 146 yards and four scores. Freshman receiver Rock Smith had two catches, both for scores, for 43 yards.
