Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Maize scored 71 points in the first half in routing Haysville Campus, 79-7. The Eagles rushed for 392 yards in the game led by 100-yard performances from senior Elijah Cross and sophomore Demarye Smith. Cross carried eight times for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Smith added 107 yards and a score on ten carries. Shannon Jones rushed for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Brayden Myovela and Pearce George also rushed for scores.
Lawrence rolled over Shawnee Mission West, 55-0. The Chesty Lions scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and led 48-0 at halftime. Quarterback Banks Bowen passed for 219 yards and five touchdowns. Bowen threw two touchdown passes to Gabe Wingerd and one each to Kavon Price, Khyree McGee, and Joshua Galbreath.
Class 5A:
On Thursday night, Basehor-Linwood scored three first-quarter touchdowns in rolling past Topeka West, 59-6. Junior quarterback Carson Dixon passed for 262 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Dixon connected with Austin Adair on a pair of touchdown passes and threw one each to Connar Reavis, Nash Morrison, and Roman Miller. Seven Bobcat ball carriers combined for 200 yards with Peter Rodriguez, Jeremiah Buie, and Nick Doering scoring touchdowns.
Salina Central rolled to a 57-7 win over Newton. Cooper Reves rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mustang offense. Abram Owings also added two rushing scores with Keaton Smith also reaching the end zone. Jack Gordon passed for 155 yard and a pair of touchdowns for the Mustangs.
De Soto won a shootout over Shawnee Heights, 69-57, thanks to a big night on the ground. The Wildcats rushed for 575 yards on the night and did not complete a pass. Jayden Lang rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns on 20 attempts, while Drew Parks added 194 yards and a score on 15 carries. Senior John Chapman also added 100 yards and Will Bailey contributed 64 yards and a touchdown. De Soto led 41-28 at halftime and 55-35 after three quarters. Shawnee Heights junior quarterback Aiden Scott passed for 593 yards and seven touchdowns. A.J. Gallegos (223 yards), Tyren Parker (173 yards), and Parker Busenitz (171) yards all had big receiving nights. Gallegos and Busenitz each caught three touchdown passes with Parker catching the other score from Scott.
Pittsburg picked up a quality road-win at Paola, 42-14. The Purple Dragons benefitted from a touchdown on defense and special teams. Courtland Jones, Jr. returned a kickoff for a touchdown and De’Marus Partee forced and recovered two fumbles – one for a score. The Dragons got rushing scores from Nate Mitchell, Conner Proffitt, and Carsen Nickelson. Nickelson also tossed a touchdown pass to Cole Hayden.
Topeka Seaman broke open a tie game to pull away from Lansing, 43-22. Quarterback Max Huston passed for 349 yards and three touchdowns – all to Bryer Finley who had 12 catches for 298 yards. Kaden McKinney added 122 yards and three scores for the Vikings. Lansing was led by Jaxon Pollard’s 136 yards and a score. Pollard also passed for 138 yards and two scores, but was intercepted four times.
Valley Center picked up its first win of the season with a 21-0 shutout of Salina South. Senior Connor Meyer rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Doc Needham. The Hornets were led by Rylan Bailey’s 138 yards and a score on the ground. Salina South has now dropped 29 consecutive games.
Class 4A:
Ottawa improved to 4-1 and kept pace in the Frontier League standings with a 31-24 victory over previously unbeaten Spring Hill. The Cyclones scored in each quarter in the win and led 17-10 at halftime. The Ottawa defense limited Spring Hill to 114 rushing yards – well below their season average of 240 yards per game on the ground entering Friday’s contest. Ottawa will take on winless Bonner Springs this week.
Atchison scored two touchdowns in each quarter in rolling past KC Washington, 55-6, in a battle of teams at the top of the Meadowlark Conference standings. Kolton Bonnel passed for 248 yards and four touchdowns for the Phoenix. Ayden Rebant and Leighton Boldridge each topped the 100-yard mark with 109 and 106 yards, respectively. Washington was led by Savion Stone’s 100 rushing yards with a touchdown.
Labette County picked up a key SEK League road-win by outlasting Fort Scott, 16-14. The Grizzlies were led by junior Jamaal Jackson who carried 30 times for 146 yards and a score. Quarterback Aaron Wyrick passed for 126 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jackson. Sophomore Fernando Rivera also connected on a 27-yard field goal for the Grizzlies.
McPherson scored in each quarter to hold off Rose Hill, 35-26. The Bullpups trailed the Rockets 18-13 at halftime before a 22-8 second half. Senior Carter Allen passed for 196 yards and three touchdowns – one each to Bishop Brown, Izyck Puhalla, and Ashton Malm. McPherson was led on the ground by Catch Delaney’s 115 yards and a touchdown.
Winfield improved to 4-1 with a 29-8 win over Towanda-Circle. The Vikings rebounded from their overtime loss to McPherson by limiting the Thunderbirds to 76 yards rushing on 24 attempts. The Vikings also intercepted two Circle passes. Winfield has a challenging game at Wellington this week.
Class 3A:
Goodland outscored Ulysses 27-6 in the second half to pull away for a 48-28 home victory. The Cowboys improved to 3-2 on the season thanks to a stout run defense that held Ulysses to negative 11 rush yards on 15 attempts. Ulysses freshman quarterback Tyce Perez passed for 265 yards and all four Tiger touchdowns, but was intercepted twice.
Clearwater evened its district record at 1-1 with a 41-7 victory over Chaparral. Garrison Wells rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Indians. Cooper Williams added 166 yards and two scores on the ground and Landon Woods added the other score. Chaparral managed 56 rush yards on 19 attempts against the Indian defense.
Hesston scored all 48 points in the first half in rolling past Smoky Valley, 48-6. Jerick Humphreys completed all 11 of his pass attempts for 182 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those touchdown passes went to Asher Deutschendorf who has 124 receiving yards. Karter Gonzalez rushed for 109 yards and two scores for the Swathers. Smoky Valley was limited to 100 yards of total offense on 36 plays
Wellsville remains undefeated after a 43-13 win over Santa Fe Trail. The Eagles scored in each quarter and managed 283 yards on the ground with six rushing touchdowns. Payton Otwell scored three touchdowns with 96 yards, while Armond Graves led the way with 119 rush yards and two scores.
Holcomb scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to take control and beat Colby, 41-7. Junior Korbin Johnson rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries to lead the Longhorns. Senior Keegan Johnson rushed for two scores and threw a touchdown pass to freshman Cooper Cranston.
Wichita Collegiate rebounded from its loss to Andale with a 42-12 win over Pratt. After Pratt scored first, the Spartans responded with the game’s next 42 points. Harrison Simon passed for 339 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing scores. Jaden Parker scored two rushing touchdowns. Sebastin Hines-Truner caught seven passes for 162 yards, while AJ Batiste had 117 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Class 2A:
Humboldt picked up an impressive win over Prairie View, 46-35, in a matchup of playoff contenders in their respective classifications. The Cubs led 26-21 at the half and held off the Buffaloes 20-14 in the second half. Senior Blake Ellis passed for 183 yards and two scores and added 193 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Prairie View rushed for 303 yards with Parker Schwarz rushing for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Goodwin added two scores for Prairie View.
Ellsworth remained unbeaten with a 14-6 win over Hillsboro. Senior Landin Johnson rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts to lead the Bearcats. Tucker Goss rushed for the other Ellsworth score.
Lakin scored 38 points in the first quarter in cruising past Southwestern Heights, 64-0. The Broncs rushed for 357 yards in the game with five different ball carriers contributing between 40 and 86 rushing yards. Colter Oldham had 75 yards and two scores, while freshman Weston Loeppke led the way with 86 yards and a touchdown.
Royal Valley scored single touchdowns in each half in topping Perry-Lecompton, 12-8. The Panthers were led by Jaxson Stevens who rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown. Manny Oliveira added the other Royal Valley score along with 73 yards on the ground.
Garden Plain built a 26-0 halftime lead in beating Haven, 42-14, in a key district game. The Owls rushed for 300 yards in the game with Emrick Hays leading the way with 87 yards and two touchdowns. Brady Brack and Seth Dugan each added rushing scores. Brack also passed for 74 yards including a touchdown to Dugan. Haven entered this contest averaging 46.5 points and more than 425 yards of total offense per game.
Eureka scored 22 points in the second quarter in defeating Leon-Bluestem, 30-14. Peyton Hare rushed for 119 yards and two scores for the Tornadoes. Hare also threw a touchdown pass to Laken Valentine. Colten Neal lead Bluestem with 171 rushing yards with two scores.
Caney Valley improved to 3-2 with a 48-0 Homecoming shutout of Cherryvale. Quarterback Layne Denney threw touchdown passes to Ben Matthews and Drake Roberds. The Bullpups will host Fredonia this week before challenging games against Galena and Riverton to close out play in District 1.
Class 1A:
Sterling picked up a key district win by knocking off then No. 4 Medicine Lodge, 33-26. The Black Bears built a 19-7 first-half lead and held on for the road win. Zane Farney rushed for 133 yards and two scores and Wyatt Newberry added 100 yards and a score. Logan Isaac passed for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Keveon Ruiz led Medicine Lodge with 129 yards pass and a touchdown and two rushing scores.
Ellinwood got a huge night from senior Landon Simpson in outscoring South Sumner County, 59-27. Simpson carried 15 times for 328 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Eagles to victory. Simpson also threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ty Hammeke.
St. Mary’s Colgan celebrated homecoming with a 56-0 win over Uniontown. The Panthers scored all 56 points in the first half. Junior Carston Simmons completed 5 of 6 passes for 134 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Will Schremmer caught a pair of touchdown passes, while Klayton Adamson and Brady Badart each caught one from Simmons. Noah Duncan, Lane Stultz and Schremmer each rushed for touchdowns.
Stanton County shut out Syracuse, 42-0, behind a strong rushing attack. The Trojans rushed for 320 yards on the night. Juniors Sean Hines and Arihm Gonzalez both went over 100 yards on the ground. Hines rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while Gonzalez added 113 yards and a touchdown. Ronnie Andrade and Ian Floyd also each added rushing touchdowns.
Oakley held off Plainville, 14-13, to pick up a key district win. Junior Carsen Beal passed for 89 yards and two touchdowns for the Plainsmen. Beal tossed touchdown passes to Eli Schmidt and Chance Beckman.
Eight-Man, Division I:
Ellis and Trego are in the Mid-Continent League and less than 20 miles apart but had not played since 2009. However, Ellis switched to eight-man football this season and the squads played a wild game Friday. Trego defeated Ellis, 52-47. Trego had opened 0-4, though had faced several ranked teams. Trego junior quarterback Ashton Wynn, a returning starter, finished with 27 carries for 178 yards and six touchdowns. Wynn delivered seven of 11 passing for 65 yards. Plus, sophomore Jack Conness delivered 32 rushes for 182 yards and one score. Freshman quarterback Trenton Schartz finished with 11 of 26 passing for 290 yards and five touchdowns. Schartz delivered 12 rushes for 65 yards and a score.
In a matchup of two teams with winning records, Hill City delivered a 76-36 win versus St. Francis. HC delivered 524 yards of total offense, while SF finished with 472. Junior Tate Balthazor finished 19 of 27 for 218 yards with five touchdowns. Senior Dayton Stephen finished with 18 carries for 144 yards and three scores. Balthazor rushed 10 times for 76 yards and two TDs. Stephen, one of the state’s top all-purpose threats, finished with nine catches for 83 yards and three scores. St. Francis junior Ethan Graham finished with another big game with 10 catches for 143 yards and two scores. Junior Lucas Raile enjoyed a huge night with 28 of 37 passing for 379 yards with four scores against four interceptions.
Rawlins County dominated struggling Stockton, 58-12. Rawlins County senior Ryan Sramek, the classification’s leading rusher, did not play in the contest. Instead, senior Dorian Culwell finished with 15 carries for 134 yards and four scores. Atwood ran 42 plays and scored eight offensive touchdowns. The Buffs finished with six sacks.
Oswego rolled over Central Burden, 49-0. Oswego scored 36 points in the first quarter. Senior Josh Hutchinson finished with nine carries for 124 yards and a score. Freshman Demitri Williamson, senior Hunter Kelly, and junior Owen Jackson all rushed for two touchdowns. Williamson tallied 75 rushing yards and Kelly 74.
Eight-Man, Division II:
Dighton, just outside the top-five rankings, defeated Logan-Palco, 44-14. Senior Daniel Cramer completed eight of 14 passes for 108 yards with two scores against no interceptions. Senior Ryland Price delivered 12 carries for 127 yards and three scores. Senior Daniel Cramer finished with 11 rushes for 65 yards and one score. L-P churned out 77 plays for 390 yards. Senior Rhett Kats finished with 17 of 34 passing for 263 yards with two scores. Senior Caleb Sparks delivered four catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
Marmaton Valley stands at 4-1 after a 54-0 win against Wheatland-Grinnell. Senior Brayden Lawson completed 11 of 13 passes for 224 yards with four touchdowns against no interceptions. Sophomore Cooper Scharff delivered six rushes for 88 yards and three TDs.
Osborne opened 0-3 against a brutal opening slate and picked up back-to-back victories. The Bulldogs defeated Pike Valley, 64-18. Osborne rushed 31 times for 394 yards. Senior quarterback Dalton Garman rushed 13 times for 176 yards. Junior Kaiden Schultze rushed eight times for 128 yards and a score.
Argonia-Attica stands at 4-1, 2-0 in District 5. The Titans beat Fairfield, 58-12. Junior Carson Vineyard rushed 12 times for 156 yards and three scores. Sophomore Maddex Hemberger completed four of five passes for 119 yards and three scores. He rushed 10 times for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Six-Man:
Golden Plains defeated Northern Valley, 59-14. GP led 20-14 after the first quarter and steadily pulled away. Golden Plains scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter. GP tallied 14 in the third and seven in the fourth. Golden Plains outgained Northern Valley, 424-257. Golden Plains took a quick 14-0 lead. Golden Plains junior Dylan Wark rushed 14 times for 243 yards for five touchdowns and returned an interception 58 yards for a score.
