Around the Classes - Week 7 recap
Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.Â
Class 6A:
Blue Valley Northwest scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from Blue Valley North, 28-7. The Huskies got 187 rush yards and a touchdown on 34 carries from senior Lovie Pulliam. Senior Logan Smith passed for 153 yards and three scores, including two to Ayden McGibboney and one to Trevor Garlington. Â
Lawrence knocked rival Lawrence Free State from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 31-24 overtime victory. Lawrence tied the game at 17-17 with a field goal with less than two minutes remaining. Free State then regained the lead, 24-17, as Wesley Edison hit Bralin Preston on a 38-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 remaining. Lawrence then responded in the final minute as Banks Bowen tossed a 60-yard bomb to Malcolm Paul to tie the game at 24. IN overtime, Bowen hit Mason Mosiman on a 6-yard touchdown pass for a 31-24 Lawrence lead. On Free State’s possession, Edison hit Grant Lincoln on a pass, but Lincoln was tackled short of the end zone by Lawrence High’s Zander Thomas.
Olathe South held off Shawnee Mission South, 41-40, in a back-and-forth game in the Sunflower League. Falcon quarterback Bryce Noernberg passed for 215 yards and three touchdowns and added 191 yards and three more scores on the ground. Cooper Warren caught five passes for 129 yards and two scores. Shawnee Mission South was led by Grant Jennings’ who passed for 197 yards and two scores and added 105 yards and score on the ground. Ben Johnson scored three rushing times and Jake Johnson had 119 receiving yards and two scores. Â
Garden City won the Hatchet by beating rival Dodge City, 30-13. The Buffaloes led 23-0 before Dodge City got on the board in the third quarter. Garden City improved to 5-2 with the win and can grab a share of the Western Athletic Conference title with a win at Great Bend this week.
Class 5A:
Spring Hill trailed Fort Scott 14-13 at halftime, but the Broncos rallied for a big second half to win 61-26. Colton McKanna rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries in the win. Jackson Torrez and Tyson Beashore each added rushing scores. Beashore also passed for 133 yards. Â
Hutchinson scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Maize, 36-17. The Salthawks rushed for 329 yards on 55 attempts in the game. Zion Burgess and Kade Smith each rushed for two touchdowns, while Devon Spiller added one rushing score. Hutchinson held Maize to 36 rush yards on 22 attempts.
Bishop Carroll handed Wichita Heights just its second loss of the season in a 31-14 decision. The Golden Eagles led 17-0 at halftime and held off the Falcons in the second half. Jackson King, Thomas Gorges, and Drew Niedens each rushed for touchdowns for Carroll. The Eagles managed only 89 rush yards on 41 attempts. King also threw a touchdown pass to Cal Purvis. Heights was led by Lucas Meyer’s 65 yards rushing with a score. Carroll improved to 3-4 with the victory.
Great Bend routed Ulysses, 56-16, to improve to 4-3 on the season. Senior Cody Miller rushed for 133 yards and two scores, while sophomore quarterback Daxton Minton added three rushing touchdowns. Minton also threw a touchdown pass to Ian Premer. Ulysses was led by Aden Alvarado who rushed for 146 yards and a score.
Topeka Highland Park blanked KC Northeast (Mo.) 36-0. Ja’Corey Robbinson passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns and added 66 yards rushing. The Scots actually picked up two victories this week. It was announced that Lincoln College Prep (Mo.) has vacated several victories this season for the use of an ineligible player. Lincoln Prep beat Highland Park 57-6 back in Week 5, however, that game will now officially count as a Highland Park forfeit victory.
Class 4A:
Basehor-Linwood held off Topeka Seaman, 27-24, in the United Kansas Conference. Sam Boetcher rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bobcat offense. Brady VanDonge also passed for 286 yards and a score. Kaleb Scott caught ten passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. Seaman was led by Max Huston who threw for 254 yards and a score. He also added a rushing touchdown.
Wellington won for a fourth consecutive week by beating Towanda-Circle, 31-22. Quarterback Dusty Bannister completed only seven passes, but they went for 209 yards and a touchdown. Skyler Branam caught four passes for 136 yards and a score, while Carter Burnett also caught a touchdown pass from Trenton Elmore. Bannister added two rushing scores. Conner Chadwell passed for 186 yards and two scores for Circle.
Chanute blanked Coffeyville, 14-0, in a key SEK League game. The Blue Comets scored single touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters. Quinton Harding rushed 27 times for 180 yards and a touchdown, while Kris Harding, II added a rushing score. Â
Atchison remained unbeaten by stepping out of Meadowlark Conference play and shutting out Perry-Lecompton, 42-0. The Phoenix led 27-0 at halftime after erupting for a 20-point first quarter. Trey Carter passed for 78 yards and rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown. Xiomar Hernandez rushed for 105 yards and two scores, while Jaden Carter added 71 yards and two scores.
Class 3A:
Wellsville improved to 7-0 with a 58-16 win over Santa Fe Trail. The Eagles scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and then added three more scores in the third quarter. Quarterback Willie Dorsey passed for 343 yards and four touchdowns, including 204 yards and two scores to Dezmond Winton. Dorsey also added a pair of rushing scores and Payton Otwell rushed for 129 yards and two scores. Colton Warthen rushed for 188 yards and a score for Santa Fe Trail.
Aidan Hill connected on a 38-yard field goal with :10 seconds left to lift Frontenac to a 10-8 victory over Parsons. Frontenac scored first on a touchdown run by Gavin Witthuhn before Parsons responded with a Jahmarion Washington touchdown run and two-point conversion.
Holcomb scored in each of the last three quarters to top Hugoton, 21-13. The Longhorns were led by senior Damon Mesa’s 286 yards rushing on 28 carries. Mesa added two rushing scores on the night, while Korbin Johnson added 50 yards rushing with a score. Holcomb rushed for 363 yards and averaged 9.6 yards per carry.
Iola picked up a key District 2 victory by topping Prairie View, 33-18. Mustang quarterback Landon Wiede passed for 146 yards and two scores and added 88 yards on the ground with another touchdown. Benjamin Kerr led the ground game with 167 yards and two touchdowns. Kerr also caught a touchdown pass. Iola finishes district play with a 3-1 record and clinches the district title if Burlington loses to Girard.
Columbus got a fourth-quarter touchdown to get by Baxter Springs, 42-36. The Titans got 109 yards on the ground from Syler Schuburger and rushing touchdowns from Jack Vilela and Jett Tanner. Jace Midgett also caught two touchdown passes and had 118 receiving yards. Payton Gains led Baxter Springs with 254 yards rushing and three scores. Gains also passed for 100 yards.
Class 2A:
Humboldt rolled over Cherryvale, 66-0. The Cubs exploded for 38 points in the second quarter. Junior Blake Ellis finished seven of nine passing for 107 yards with a score. Ellis recorded nine rushes for 124 yards and a score. Junior Cole Mathes finished with three rushing TDs.
Council Grove defeated Eureka, 43-0. CS led 7-0 after the first quarter and 25-0 at halftime. Freshman Luke Stewart was nine of 21 for 167 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Ace Monihen moved to running back and delivered 12 carries for 78 yards with a score. Junior Cade Goodell had 13 carries for 88 yards. Junior Landon Dody recorded three catches for 71 yards and three TDs.
Norton improved to 7-0 after a 28-6 road win against Thomas More Prep-Marian at Lewis Field Stadium. The game was played in high winds and blustery conditions. Norton scored one touchdown in each quarter and often had drives of 10-plus plays with multiple third and fourth down conversions. Norton ran 68 plays, while TMP had 30. Junior Eli Jones finished 14 of 21 passing for 179 yards with two scores against one interception. Tyce Melvin picked off a pass.

Class 1A:

Planville rolled over Stanton County, 52-24, and won the district title. The Cardinals ran 46 plays for 419 yards. Plainville led 44-0 at halftime. The Cardinals rushed 36 times for 288 yards and six scores.
Ellis beat Republic County, 42-6. EHS continued to break and move closer to multiple school passing records (since 2003). Senior Mason Younger had eight catches for 94 yards and three TDs. Junior Caleb Noble and sophomore Carson Schartz both had touchdown receptions. Senior Logan Russell completed 15 of 25 passes for 216 yards and five touchdowns versus no interceptions. Sophomore Carson Schartz had 16 rushes for 113 yards and a score. Younger has 51 catches for 785 yards, both the best for EHS in the last 20 years.
Class 8-man I

West Elk pulled away from Oswego, 52-15. WE led 16-6 after the first quarter and 38-12 at halftime. Junior Creyo Koop rushed 20 times for 244 yards and five touchdowns. Oswego junior Josh Hutchinson had 31 carries for 217 yards and two TDs. All of Oswego’s plays came on the ground. Hutchinson had 14 tackles, Koop 12. Oswego senior Ty Walker continued his great season with a career-long 39-yard field goal.
WaKeeney-Trego defeated La Crosse, 46-6, and clinched a winning season. The Golden Eagles moved closer to their first district title in 20 years. After a scoreless first quarter, WaKeeney led 14-6 at halftime. The Golden Eagles tallied 14 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth. Sophomore Ashton Wynn recorded 22 carries for 126 yards and a score. Senior Quintin Walt delivered 13 carries for 84 yards and three TDs. Wynn also passed for 56 yards and three scores. Wynn and sophomore Darris Brown both picked off a pass.
Pratt-Skyline defeated Macksville, 54-0, in a game that ended at halftime. Skyline scored 32 points in the first quarter. Senior Brayden Berens finished with 13 carries for 55 yards and three TDs. Berens completed five of five passes for 47 yards. Skyline held Macksville to 31 plays for 85 yards.
Class 8-man II
South Barber defeated Stafford, 48-0, in a game that ended at halftime. Senior Briggs Jewell recorded 11 of 15 passing for 171 yards and three scores. SB held Stafford to 34 plays for 101 yards. Three players had a receiving score.
Central Plains held off Bucklin, 26-22. For Bucklin, senior Andrew Bowman rushed 19 times for 113 yards and three scores.
Thunder Ridge picked up its fourth straight victory with a 66-42 win versus St. Francis. Senior Mason Baker continued to lead Kansas in rushing with another huge game. He finished with nine of 13 passing for 74 yards with three scores against one interception. Baker had 45 carries for 355 yards and six touchdowns.
6-Man/non-KSHSAA

Reno County defeated Otis-Bison, 54-20. Freshman Bo Smith had seven of 11 passing for 125 yards and four scores. Smith had 12 rushes for 91 yards. Lex Washington accounted for three scores, while Mason  Kingsley and Tucker Spellman both had one.
