The state quarterfinal round featured shakeups in several classifications, though all the No. 1 teams won, as did each squad that have at least a 13-game winning streak.

Plus, the defending state champions in 6A (Derby), 5A (Mill Valley), 4A (St. James), 3A (Andale), 2A (Rossville), 1A (Olpe) and Eight-Man, Division I (Little River) all are still playing. Derby, Andale, Rossville, Olpe and Eight-Man, Division I Meade all have won at least 13 consecutive games.

Thirty-two teams remain in the Kansas high school playoffs, four in each classification.

In 6A, Derby stayed at No. 1, followed by Blue Valley Northwest, Lawrence and surprising Blue Valley West. Lawrence Free State is ranked fifth after a close loss to Derby.

In 5A, Mill Valley stayed first with a 28-point victory. No. 2 Kapaun Mt. Carmel beat City League rival Wichita Northwest for the second time this year. Maize and Aquinas had a pair of two-score wins. Wichita Northwest is ranked fifth and won’t make a state title game for the first time in four years.

In 4A, No. 1 Andover Central will play No. 2 Buhler, and No. 3 St. James Academy faces No. 4 Bishop Miege in the semifinals. AC and Buhler did not allow a point in the quarterfinal wins. SJA and Miege combined to allow 13. These are rematches from the regular season. No. 5 Mulvane had a seven-win improvement from 2020 and completed a great year with a 7-0 loss to Buhler.

In 3A, two-time state champ Andale rolled over Concordia. No. 2 Southeast of Saline held off Cheney. No. 3 Holton and No. 4 Frontenac picked up solid victories. Fifth-ranked Cheney finished the first double-digit wins season in school annals.

In 2A, War on 24 rivals No. 1 Rossville and No. 2 Silver Lake will meet up again in the state semifinals. No. 3 Kingman throttled TMP, 35-0, in Hays. No. 4 Beloit pulled off a slight upset with a five-point win versus Hillsboro. No. 5 Wellsville ended its season with a one-score loss to Silver Lake.

In 1A, No. 1 Olpe delivered its ninth shutout. No. 2 Inman and No. 3 Sedgwick had second-half comebacks. Sedgwick is into the state semifinals for the first time ever. No. 4 Centralia returns to the state semifinals. No. 5 Smith Center lost to Sedgwick in the final seconds and finished an injury-plagued year with just two losses.

In Eight-Man, Division I, No. 1 Little River and No. 2 Meade continued its long winning streaks. LR has three one-score wins this year. LR gets a semifinal rematch with No. 3 Canton-Galva. No. 4 Hill City has won double-digit games for the second time in school history. No. 5 Madison has four losses in four years, though has not made a state finale in that span.

In Eight-Man, Division II, No. 1 Axtell and No. 2 Thunder Ridge again rolled and will match up in Kensington this Friday. No. 3 Victoria gets a rematch with No. 4 Wheatland-Grinnell in Grainfield. Last year, Victoria beat W-G on the road in the Round of 16. No. 5 Lebo finished its season.
